Maybe you heard "hardening off" of a plant.
When seedlings are nearly ready to be planted outside, it recommended that you
"harden off" the things by putting them outside in a sheltered spot during the
day. This acclimates them to outdoor conditions before they have to fend
completely for themselves. It's thought that breezes trigger the stems to
thicken, also.
