Hardening is when you slowly acclimate a plant to living outdoors.

For example, you may start seedlings in peat on warming trays and once
they begin to grow, you move them to soil...at this point, you start
bringing the plant outdoors during the daytime but bring it back inside
to avoid the cold nights.

Every couple of days you extend the duration that your little plant
stays outside until it stays out both day and night.

It's important to know when your last frost date is--you wouldn't want
to lose your plant after all this effort.

Another example of hardening is when people bring plants inside to spend
the winter but have to get them used to the outdoors again once it warms
up -- get it!

Hope this answers your question.
