If you are not burning plastics etc, I don't see what the problem would be
in small amounts. I am sure others will give more details.
IIRC, ashes should be far from acidic, especially from hard woods. Pioneers
made soap from ashes (lye) and animal fat. One of our science teachers
reproduces the process for his students using sodium hydroxide rather than
potassium hydroxide for the potash. He mixes it with lard. Sodium
hydroxide is a strong base, i.e. high pH.
