John Cahill says that bugs are "eating out the centers
of the leaves" on his rose bushes and asks about the use
of soap as a controlling agent.

I don't believe that any old soap is necessarily insecticidal.
Safer's Insecticidal Soap, a commercial product, is used on
roses and is generally effective on most chewing insects. (If
I had chewed out centers on the leaves of my roses, I would
suspect grasshoppers.) Safer's Soap might be a good way to go.
The directions on the label of Safer's Insecticidal Soap are
specific and the stuff is easy to use.

It will burn if it is applied when temperatures are at high
levels. It might be a good idea to apply in late afternoon or
early evening during the summer.
