~sigh~

This thread is usually flame-bait (as flaming as it ever gets here on rge that
is--thanks moderators!!) but I must point out that, regardless of the
ecological or biological "safety" of bioengineered foods, the result of
products like "Roundup Ready" corn is that more chemicals are poured onto soil.
There is a basic social problem with treating soil (a non-renewable resource)
as a sterile medium that must be controlled to produce a maximum yeild.
When biotech first developed, there was talk of the development of food crops
that could be grown in poor soil, with little water, and with great tolerance
to common pests and diseases. It promised food locally grown for all. The end
of famine. Very idealistic, I know, but at least humanitarian. Funny, then,
that the first mass-produced biotech seeds are built to encourage the use of
herbicides. To make it more expensive to farm. To increase profit, not end
hunger.

Did we learn nothing from the "Green Revolution" of the 70's?

Respect the living earth that sustains us. Buy organic. Recycle. Set an
example.
