When I moved to my new house 2 years ago, the ground was hard clay. I
set up 2 earth machines and began adding kitchen scraps and yard
wastes. Since I didn't have fences back then, I asked the neighbours
if they would dump their yard wastes in my bins as well. Thus the
bins were filled every weekend, rotting down by the next so it can be
filled again.
Unfortunately, by summer, most of the bin contents was grass clippings
and became obnoxious with flies everywhere. I turned the slimy
contents and tried to add more carbon with shredded paper and hamster
bedding. As it turned out, the hamster bedding provided more benefit
than mere carbon. It drew mice.
It probably takes dozens to do what they do and I marveled at the
changes in tunnel formations each time I lift the lid on my earth
machine. I have not turned it in months and there is no smell. The
hard compacted clay that the earth machine sits on has been lifted and
mixed into the bin contents. Isn't nature wonderful!
