We have a compost tumbler bin & it doesn't seem to be working as expected.
We have been gathering garbage (mainly banana peels, other fruit peels, rotted
vegetables, dried leaves of indoor plants & a few slices of moldy bread) in a
pot we're using as a kind of a holding bin. When that thing fills up, we put
it in the tumbler & mix the garbage with leaves & grass. The results we get
after a few weeks with the stuff in the tumbler is just that most of the stuff
just dries out. I assume that it should be changing into black compost
(dirt-like) material instead of just drying out.
I'm sure you expert gardeners just find this silly - but maybe you can help us
out as to the correct way to compost.
We're also having a lot of fruit flies around the bin(s). I don't know if this
matters to the compost.
