I too am sorry to hear of this. I started gardening about a year and a
half ago. The first summer here in Austin trying to keep enough water in
the soil was miserable. Then I read part of her book. Now I cover my
gardens with any hay, leaves, grass etc. and I don't have weed or water
problems.
