Why did my water hyacinths croak? It wasn't frogs, there weren't any.

We have a small pond here, about six foot by four foot and a foot deep. It has
a small fountain in the middle. We filled the pond with healthy hyacinths a
friend of mine gave us. We also threw in some mosquito eaters and a few
feeders. The fish are still there, the pond is flourishing with algae (too
much, I would say) but the hyacinths are mostly dead, only a couple have any
green at all. The pond is filled with well water.

What did we do wrong? We've tried pond water treatment but not much more than
that. I'd like advice on this as an ecosystem matter because I believe that's
what it is. I have a half-completed pond elsewhere on the property and I'd like
to know if I can correct the problem before I try to do the same thing there.

Thanks,
Vince
