i'm sure (please) that someone will correct me on this - tomatoes are very
needy when it comes to nitrogen. The fresh grass clippings bind up all the
nitrogen in themselves during decomposition. By using fresh grass clippings
instead of a more aged compost/mulch, you are depriving your toms of needed
nitrogen.
