One of the issues is that plant, shrub, tree, etc. populations
as well as bird populations are so very regional. Look in
Appendix B of the FAQ for rec.gardens.ecosystems. It has
a good list of references. "Taylor's Guide to Natural
Gardening" is particularly good in spelling out the basics
