I have a question concerning the advisablity of using oak leaves as mulch
around the plants in my vegetable garden.
We started a new garden this year, ploughing up the grass and adding two
truckloads of organic compost to the mixture. The garden is about 9'x30', and
is planted with samplings of vegetables ranging from tomatoes to corn to
rhubarb. When we started the garden, I was unable to locate a soil tester to
determine PH levels. I was hoping that the compost we added would have evened
any imbalance there might have been in the garden.
When I went to mulch around the plants, the only leaves available were oak
leaves. I have heard that these are quite acidic and am wondering if they
would be ok to add to my garden or not.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
Georgie
