Drew,
Congrats on your conversion to natural fertility! I have used kelp in
similar situations; concentration should be according to particular
supplier (I used PanaSea Liquid from Emerald Isle or a granular kelp
from Integrated Fertility Management). Salts should not be a problem -
if you're harvesting your own kelp, make sure to rinse thoroughly -
though if you figure your labor, purchased kelp may be more cost
effective.
We mixed kelp with commercial bulk compost and/or fish powders to
produce an excellent, slow release dry fert. or "brewed" in 55 gal. drum
for foliar. "Brew" for 7-10 days, stir occasionally. Strain through
cheesecloth or pantyhose (if you'll be using a sprayer) and then dilute
to a light amber color - approx. 1 part brew to 2 parts water - exact
proportion is not critical.
This is an excellent food for annuals, woody ornamentals, turfgrass - I
originally developed a similar brew to reduce the incidence of fungal
pathogens on bentgrass putting greens - it accomplished that and much
more! Regular applications every 2-4 weeks during growing season. Good
luck - let me know if I can provide any more info.
