Black Dog said that she was having trouble
with an unknown beetle going after her rose
blossoms. She asked for the identification by
directed the reader to a web site with a
picture of the critter and she also asked for
suggestions regarding control.
I refered the picture to a good entomologist
associated with the Los Angeles County
Arboretum and he tentatively identifieid it
as a Grape Leaf Hoplia, Hoplia callipyge.
It's really hard to tell by a picture alone.
Probably , hand picking would be the best
all round control measure but there is a
reasonable chance that they might be
controlled with beneficial nematodes. I
could only guess as to which benefical
nematode might work best.
