It is possible that the rains have leached out some of the N from the soil,
but, if you had as mild a winter as we did in CA, the problem may be that the
trees did not remain entirely dormant long enough--whenever it gets a little
too warm for trees that require a dormant season, they use up some of their
stored sugars, resulting in less available energy for growth in spring.
