Voles, moles, gophers
voles are mice that build runways and tunnels that are (surprise!) mouse-sized.
Damage is characterized by gnaw marks on twigs and bark. To learn more about
voles (and controlling them) see:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/lrc/voles.html

gophers are more rat sized and dig extensive tunnels. Usually only the
openings of the tunnels are visible and are characterized by large
crescent-shaped areas of excavated soil. They also will gnaw roots and bark.
to learn more see:

moles are also mouse sized but are insectivores. They dig tunnels near the
surface as they are hunting grubs and worms. They leave molehills that look
like mini-volcanoes--symmetrical cones. to learn more about moles see:

Why all this? Because the post above seems to be unclear about exactly what
sort of animal is causing the damage. Controls for these different pests are
very different.
