Sugar water supplies calories and water. It is not much of a
food. It's better than nothing and it does help to get the
hummers through the day but, in the long run, it would be
better to put in plants that attract and sustain these birds.

We garden in Southern California which has a Mediterranean
climate. A number of the Salvias grow very well here and they
do a great job of attracting and sustaining hummingbirds. We
have maybe a dozen different kinds of Salvias and because of
that we have a good hummingbird population.

I think the best way to attract and sustain hummingbirds is to
learn which plants in your particular area really attract the
hummers and to then incorporate those plants in your garden.
Kids shouldn't get too much candy . . . it spoils their appetite
and rots their teeth. I think the same issues apply.
