GLOSSARY OF NAMES AND PLACES Ambrosia: A former follower of Mab, who she drafts to raise the infant Merlin to young adulthood. Ardent: A Lord (land baron) and father of Merlin's true love, Nimue. Arthur: Son of Uther and Igraine. The rightful King of England. Avalon: A beautiful island purported to be the home of the Holy Grail. Camelot: A mystical and golden city dedicated to peace and charity that was built by Arthur. Constant: The first Christian King of England. Arthur's grandfather. Elaine: The wife of Lancelot, who, upon learning of his betrayal with Guinevere, takes her own life. Elissa: Merlin's real mother who, after birthing him, is abandoned by Mab to die. Excalibur: The magic sword given to Merlin by the Lady of the Lake to defeat Vortigern. The sword of the rightful King of England which was removed from the stone by Arthur. Frik: Chameleon-like gnome and loyal servant to Mab. Galahad: Son of Lancelot and Elaine. The knight with the pure heart who found the Holy Grail. Gawain: Son of Lord Lot. He is defeated by Lancelot in a joust for the right to defend the virtue of Guinevere. Guinevere: Wife of King Arthur. The high queen of England. Holy Grail: Cup believed to be used by Jesus. According to legend, the Grail possessed the ability to heal the sick, and could only be found by a knight of pure heart. Igraine: Wife of the Duke of Cornwell and mother to Morgan Le Fey. She is also seduced by Uther and brings forth a son, Arthur. Joyous Gard: The castle of Lancelot, Elaine and their son, Galahad. The place Merlin was told he would find a knight of pure heart. Lady of the Lake: Mab's "good" sister. She gives Excalibur to Merlin. Lord Lot: Father of Gawain. One of Arthur's supporters. Mab: Merlin's nemesis. A powerful witch and sworn protector of the "Old Ways." Sister of the Lady of the Lake. Merlin: The last sorcerer. Mordred: The evil child produced by the union of Arthur and Morgan Le Fey. He becomes Arthur's nemesis. Morgan Le Fey: Homely daughter of the Duke of Cornwell and Lady Igraine. Made beautiful by Frik in order to seduce her half-brother, Arthur. Mother of Arthur's son, Mordred. Nimue: (pronounced Nim-You-Way) Daughter of Lord Ardent. True love of Merlin. Pendragon Castle: Home of Uther, King of England. Salisbury Plain: Site of the final battle between Arthur and Mordred. Tintagel Castle: Home of the Duke of Cornwell and his wife, Lady Igraine. Uther: Son of King Constant and father of Arthur. The second Christian King of England. Vortigern: Mab's ally and sworn enemy of King Constant. He defeats the king, kills him, and rules England. He takes Nimue prisoner and bums her severely, but is ultimately defeated by Merlin.
