"Sam's eyes are amazing, so is his smile. He is unique. A one-off. And that's what makes stars." Like Sam Neill says about Starlight, "There aren't many like him." SAM NEILL, born in Ulster, raised in New Zealand and now more Australian than anything else' came late to stardom. But when he did, he made no mistake. After a career in New Zealand where he did more directing than acting, Sam came to Australia and appeared in a number of unremarkable films and TV dramas. But then came 'My Brilliant Career' and the handsome but unsuccessful suitor of Judy Davis had people talking. He went to London looking for his big break and got it. James Mason, with whom Neill is often compared in voice and presence, believed he was right for the lead role, Damien in 'Omen III - The Final Conflict: Mason paid Neill's fare to the American audition and had the satisfaction of seeing his judgement vindicated. The film took a panning but Sam Neill's performance as the devil incarnate was praised. His career now went international. In Poland he made 'Enigma' and 'From a Far Country. In West Berlin he made 'Possession.' France's Claude Chabrol wanted him for 'The Blood of Others' and in England, for television, he made 'Ivanhoe', 'The Country Girl' and scored a thumping triumph in the role of `Reilly, Ace of Spies.' Why did Producer, Jock Blair, choose him to play Starlight? "Sam's eyes are amazing, so is his smile. He is unique. A one-off. And that's what makes stars." Like Sam Neill says about Starlight, "Them aren't many like him." "He has so much dash, charm and flair. He's a likeable sort of chap with a reckless nature. There aren't many like him." That's how Sam Neill sums up Captain Starlight. Sam Neill sees himself in quite a different fashion. Yet there are very few people like Sam. For one thing he is reluctant to talk about himself (something of a rarity on the film star circuit). For another, he's got quite a story to tell. Sam Neill has established an international reputation as an actor and as a candidate for the position left vacant by Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Steve McQueen. Sam Neill say the experts, is on his way to superstardom. In Britain he has been voted the most popular actor. And when the readers of the Daily Express were asked recently who should be the new James Bond they overwhelmingly called for Sam Neill.
