Building a Newsroom Intranet

Networks with TCP/IP
Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol:

  • allows computers of different types to communicate via Internet/intranet.
  • assigns every computer on the network an address: an IP number, or "dotted quad" (e.g., 123.45.6.78).
  • some IP addresses have a domain name, an "alias" for easier recall (e.g., libserver).

  • Typical Corporate IP Network has:

  • a router connecting network to the Internet.
  • a proxy and/or firewall protecting the network from the Internet.
  • maybe a domain name server (DNS) maintaining aliases.
  • maybe a server that assigns IP numbers dynamically to client machines.
  • but an internal web server must have a static or fixed IP.

  • Software for Connecting Clients to TCP/IP:

  • MacTCP or Open Transport (Macintosh)
  • Trumpet Winsock (Windows 3.1)
  • TCP/IP for Workgroups (Windows 3.11)
  • Network control panel (comes with Windows 95 & NT)
