Building a Newsroom Intranet
Networks with TCP/IP
- Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol:
- allows computers of different types to communicate via Internet/intranet.
- assigns every computer on the network an address: an IP number, or "dotted quad" (e.g., 123.45.6.78).
- some IP addresses have a domain name, an "alias" for easier recall (e.g., libserver).
- Typical Corporate IP Network has:
- a router connecting network to the Internet.
- a proxy and/or firewall protecting the network from the Internet.
- maybe a domain name server (DNS) maintaining aliases.
- maybe a server that assigns IP numbers dynamically to client machines.
- but an internal web server must have a static or fixed IP.
- Software for Connecting Clients to TCP/IP:
- MacTCP or Open Transport (Macintosh)
- Trumpet Winsock (Windows 3.1)
- TCP/IP for Workgroups (Windows 3.11)
- Network control panel (comes with Windows 95 & NT)
