The boon came true after fifteen months during February 9 , 2000 . adiyEn was blessed again with ThiruvAlavatta Kaimkaryam to Lord VaradharAjan and had the SevA BhAgyam at Guhai Narasimhan , PerumdEvi ThAyAr , ChakkaaratthAzhwAn and AchArya RaamAnujA sannidhis . adiyEn will attempt to summarize the aanandhAnubhavams relating to this visit and the memory waves this visit stirred . The greatness of Hasthigiri **************************** As one enters the sacred city of Kaanchi, what happened here over Centuries of recorded history flashes through one's mind . Our SarvalOka saraNyan stands here on top of the elephant hill (Hasthigiri) as KaaruNyarAsi and the supreme boon giver . This MahOpakAran gave the boons of AchArya RaamAnujA and Swamy Desikan to Lord RanganAthA so that they can move to Srirangam and engage in SiddhAntha rakshanam . Such is His greatness as a boon giver ! Blessings to AlavandhAr *********************** AlavandhAr stood on this Hasthigiri and blessed AchArya RaamAnujA from a distance and begged for the boon of KarumANikka PerumAl (ShyAmaLAnga Varadhar) to bless RaamAnujA to become the future nirvAhakar for the VisishtAdhvaitha SiddhAntham .Alavandhar's well known prayer housing SaraNAgathi at the feet of Lord of Hasthigiri is: yasya prasAdha kalayA Bhadira; sruNOthi panghu: pradhAvathi javanEcha vakthi mooka: I andha: prapasyathi sutham labhathE cha vandhyA thamm dEvamEva Varadham saraNam gathOsmi II (meaning ): By whose slightest grace ,the deaf one hears, the lame one runs , the dumb one speaks , the blind person sees perfectly , the infertile lady gives birth to a son , adiyEn seeks that VaradarAjan of Hasthigiri as my sole refuge . That boon was granted to AlavandhAr by the Lord , thanks to which we have our great SampradhAyam flourishing today . Blessings to AchArya RaamAnujA ******************************* Here stands the great Lord , who rescued RaamAnujA from the evil plans of Yaadhava PrakAsan , who wanted to do away with his brilliant sishyan , RaamAnujA . The Lord rescued RaamAnujA in the middle of VindhyA forest during his journey towards VaraNAsi and brought RaamAnujA back to Kanchipuram . Lord varadhan appeared as a hunter of the forest with His divine consort and saved RaamAnujA from the evil intentions of his jealous "guru". He became the "Vazhi Kaatum varadhan " for RaamAnujA and all the others following that sampradhAyam .The most compassionate Lord blessed the repentant YaadhavaprakAsA (the former Guru) to be saved through the act of becoming AchArya RaamAnujA's sishyan at Kanchi .YadhavaprakAsar went around (pradakshiNam ) AchArya RaamAnujA once and gained the puNyam of BhU pradakshiNam and was given the name of Govindha Jeeyar . Here at Kaanchi , Govindha Jeeyar obeyed the command of his AchAryan and compiled the grantham describing the duties of a SanyAsi ( Yathi dharma samucchayam ). Blessings to other AchArya PurushAs ************************************ Here , the Lord of Hasthigiri spoke to Thirukkacchi Nambi and passed on His "six words " to RaamAnujA to remove latter's doubts . Here, AchArya RaamAnujA entered SanyAsAsramam in front of Lord VaradarAjan . Here, KurEsan, Mudali AaNDAn sought refuge at the sacred feet of AchArya RaamAnujA . Here came Thiruvaranga PerumAL arayar from Srirangam and begged for the boon of taking AchArya RaamAnujA with him to Srirangam . Lord VaradarAjan was seated then at KacchivAytthAN maNtapam .He was moved by the deva ghAnam of the arayar and granted him the request and gave permission for AchArya RaamAnujA to settle down at Srirangam to grow the Sri SampradhAyam further . There at Srirangam , AchArya RaamAnujA received Lord RanganAthA's blessings and became "Udayavar " of both the VibhUthis of the Lord. NadhAdhUr AzhwAn ***************** Here , NadhAdhUr AzhwAn of Srivathsa kulam was born as the nephew of AchArya RaamAnujA and became the sishyan of his revered uncle and helped him immnesely during the preparation of his Achaaryan's magnum opus , Sri BhAshyam . NadhAdhUr ammAL **************** Here, NadadhUr AzhwAn's grandson , VaradhachAr was born by the grace of Lord VaradarAjan . He became the AchAryan for ApuLLar , the uncle of Swamy Desikan , Sudarsana Soori ( the author of Srutha prakAsikai ) , vadakku Thiruveedhip PiLLai of Srirangam . He conducted his KaalakshEpams near the western prAkAram of Lord VaradarAjan's garbha graham , which is near the KacchivAiytthAn mantapam , where the six words were spoken by the Lord on behalf of RaamAnujA . Sri VaradAchAr swamy acquired the name of "NadAdhUr ammAl " because of the Lord recognizing his solicitude in serving milk at the right temperature . Lord recognized Swamy VaradAchAr as His own "Mother" for the concern shown . Blessings to Swamy Desikan *************************** Here , in his old age , NadadhUr ammAl met the five year old VenakatanAthan , the nephew of Sri AppuLLAr and recognized form the Brahma tEjas in the face of the child and blessed it with the famous asservAdham : prathishtApitha Vedaantha: Prathikshiptha Bahirmatha: bhooyA: thraividhyamAnya: thvam bhurikalyANa bhAjanam (Meaning ): Thou shall establish and protect true Vedaantham ( Vaidhika Matham based on true understanding of the sublime doctrines enshrined in the Upanishads and the Vedams ) and become blessed with many auspicious happenings . Here, at Kaanchi , Swamy Desikan blessed us with many Sri Sookthis in Tamil and Sanskrit ( Artha panchakam , adaikkala patthu , Panniru naamam , Sri VaishNava dinasari , Thirucchinna Maalai , atthigiri maanmiyam , nyAsa dasakam , VairAgya panchakam , SampradhAya Parisuddhi et al )relating to Kanchi and the Lord of Kaanchi , his AaarAdhana dhaivam , Sri VaradarAjan . One of the most important Sri sookthi of Swamy Desikan that we will focus on is Sri VaradarAja PanchAsath . adiyEn will cover the anubhavam of sevai of Lord VaradarAjan largely from that Sri Sookthi . Blessings to Adhi VaNN SatakOpa Jeeyar *************************************** Here , NadAdhUr ammAL's grandson , GaDikA satham ammAl took on one SrinivAsAchAr from ThirunArAyaNapuram as his sishyan for teaching adhyAthma Saasthrams . That SrinivAsaachAr was summoned by the Lord of AhObilam at the tender age of twenty to establish the Sri Matam . This happened some Six hundred years ago. Lord Lakshmi Nrusimhan initiated SrinivAsAcchAr into yathi kulam and gave Him the name of SatakOpa Jeeyar . Further , MalOlan joined SatakOpa Jeeyar in His sanchArams to bless people with Sri VaishNava sampath. The 45th Jeeyar of this illustrious paramparai is adiyEn's achAryan and a special depth of gratitude overttakes me as adiyEn sees the 100 pillar MaNtapam built by Sri Adhi VaNN SatakOpa Jeeyar on the banks of the sacred anantha saras . AdiyEn will conclude with one more posting the rich anubhavams of Sevai at VishNu Kaanchi, where the sacred dust of the AchArya PurushAL's feet are mingled from time immemorial . His choice of words to address the Lord , his appeals to the Lord of Hasthigiri in his many Sri Sookthis in Tamil and Sanskrit are marvels depicting the bhAndhavyam ( uRavu) between Swamy Desikan and His Sarva Seshi . We will illustrate their unique relationship to serve as a model for us , when we stand before Lord VaradarAjan and His divine consort .These are some of the thoughts that flashed across adiyEn's mind during the sEvai of the KarumANikka PerumAL of Kaanchi. With two days after adiyEn's own SaraNAgathi at the sacred feet of asmath AchAryan , it is no wonder that the Bhara SamarpaNam related passages of Swamy Desikan's Sri Sookthis were very much on my mind. Here are a few thoughts :. (1)Sri VairAgya Panchakam ************************** " Naasthi pithrArjitham kimchith na mayA kimchithArjitham asthi mE HasthisailAgrE VASTHU PAITHAAMAHAM DHANAM " (meaning ): adiyEn does not hold claim to any wealth bequeathed to me by my father. adiyEn however has in my posession the greatest of wealth bequeathed to me by my great grand father ( BrahmA ).That is the incomparable and priceless wealth revered as PeraruLALan , who stands on top of Hasthigiri. Why then would adiyEn need any vanishing wealth ? This upadEsam of Swamy Desikan kept ringing in my head as adiyEn stood before the boon-conferring Lord known for His bewitching smile . (2)Adaikkala Patthu ******************** Swamy Desikan's performance of SaraNAgathi at the sacred feet of Lord VaradarAjan through the ten beautiful paasurams of Desika Prabhandham made adiyEn stand in awe at the Lord's sannidhi. The very last paasuram , the quintessence of the Vedic rk ( PraNavO dhanu: --tanmayO bhavEth) cited below reminded one of the unquestioned supermacy of the dhivya dampathis and our ultimate goal in life (viz)., the performance of our Prapatthi : "ThirumahaLUm Thiruvadivum ThiruvaruLum TeLLaRivum arumai ilAmayaum uRavum aLappu ariya adi arasum karumamum aLippum amaippum kalakkam ilA vahai ninRa aruL Varadhar nilai ilakkil ampena naann amizhinthEnE " (Meaning): PeraruLALap PerumAl never leaves the side of His PirAtti even for a fraction of a second. He has the subha tanu and dhivya soundharyam ( physical beauty) that enchants every one . He has limitless mercy for those , who seek refuge in Him . He is all knowing . He is easy of access to those , who worship Him. He has the chEthanams and achEthanams as His body (sarIram ).He has no beginning and rules justly over His universe . He is the creator as well as the destroyer of every thing in this Universe. These attributes never ever leave Him. AdiyEn performs Bhara SamarpaNam (Prapatthi) at the sacred feet of such an illustrious One. (3)NyAsa Dasakam : ****************** In this moving echo of Adaikkala Patthu in Sanskrit , Swamy Desikan showed us the way to perform SaraNAgathi at the lotus feet of the Lord of Kaanchi. Swamy declared loud and clear :" Srimann ! abhIshta Varadha ! thvaam asmi SaraNam gatha:" ( Oh Lord never separated from Your PirAtti ! Oh Boon-giving Lord ! adiyEn is seeking refuge at Your sacred feet ). AdiyEn is totally committed in servitude to You ( thvath sEsahthvE sthira dhiya :); adiyEn considers the sole purpose of my life is to enjoy Your beauty and limitless kalyANa guNams ( thvath prApthi yEka prayOjanam ). "maam madhIyam cha --sva kaimkarya upakaraNam sveekuru "( Oh VaradhA ! Please accept through Your sankalpam adiyEn's aathmA , possesions and every thing as instruments for serving You ). "nithyam niraparAdhEshu kaimkaryEshu niyunkshva maam " ( Please command adiyEn to be engaged always in blemishless kaimkaryam to You ). "Kshamasva nikhilam dEva PraNathArthihara PrabhO " ( Oh Lord, who destroys the sufferings of any one , who prostrates before You ! Please forgive all my trespasses and bless me !). In the last slOkma , Swamy Desikan states that the KaaruNAmoorthy Varadharaajan executed through His own sankalpam adiyEn's Bhara SamarpaNam at His holy feet. As a result , adiyEn is totally free from any worries and fear about my protection from here on . (4)Aruttha Panchakam ********************** In this Tamil Prabhandham , Lord VaradarAjan becomes the object of adoration for Swamy Desikan . Swamy salutes the pancha GuNams of the Lord of Hasthigiri as (1) Sathyathvam (2) Jn~Anathvam (3) Ananthathvam (4) Aanandhathvam and (5) Amalathvam in the spirit of the Upanishads : " sathyam jn~Anam anantham BrahmA ". In every one of the ten paasurams , Swamy Desikan salutes Lord VaradarAjan as the inseperable consort of PerumdEvi ThAyAr .The examples of such moving salutations to the dhivya dampathis are : " Kamalai udan arasALum Karigiri mERk Kaavalan " ( The protector of Atthigiri , who rules over the universe with His divine Consort )..Paasuram 1 " ThiruvudanE VaLLal AruLALar yenum vAraNa veRRpu IrayavanE " ( The Lord with His divine consort standing on top of Hasthigiri as the most generous boon giver )...Paasuram 2 " --Kamalai udan kaNDu uhanthu ViLayADum thEn yeduttha sOlaikaL soozh Thiru AtthiUrAnE " ( Oh the auspicious Lord of Hasthi Giri ,who has the leelA rasaam to enjoy with Your Divine Consort , the games of the Jeevan enjoying its karmAs !).. Paasuram 3 "ThirumAl Vezhamalai mEyavanE "( OH Lord of Atthigiri, who is enchanted by the beauty of Your divine consort , PerumdEvi !)..Paasuram 5 " ThirumAl Thiruvatthi NaharAnE " ( Sriya: Pathi presiding over Thiru AtthiUr )..Paasuram 6 "AmbhuyatthAL AaravamudhE " ( Oh insatiable nectar of the Lotus Lady , PerumdEvi !)..Paasuram 7 "PankayatthAL ahalahilEn yenRu uRayum Atthigiri aruL muhilE !" ( Oh the DayA-soaked cloud on top of Atthigiri , who declares that He is incapable of being seperated from Your dear consort , PerumdEvi) .. Paasuram 8 " ThiruvODu uyar AtthigiriyAnE "( Oh Lord united with Your dear consort matching You in every aspect of Isvaryam and KalyANa guNams and standing tall on Hasthigiri ! )...Paasuram 9 After the series of salutations excelling each other in their depth of Bhakthi and Bhagavath anubhavam , Swamy Desikan summarizes in the tenth paasuram the blessings resulting from the Prapatthi accepted by the Dhivya Dampathis of Hasthigiri: The great PeraruLALan ruling over the bliss-filled Srivaikuuntam with PerumdEvi PirAtti as the embodiment of Aanandham unites the Jeevan-- that performed prapatthi at their feet-- with the nithyAs and MukthAs and blesses the Jeevan to engage in nithya Kaimkaryam , which was interrupted until then because of Karma sambhandham . This thrilling message for us all from Swami Desikan's own anubhavam of Prapatthi at the SaraNya Dhampathi's sacred feet at Hasthigiri can not but uplift us and hasten us to our AchAryan's holy feet . (5)Thirucchinna Maalai ************************ The glories of Lord VaradarAjA during His processions is saluted here with great feeling . The choice words selected by Swamy Desikan are the most moving , when it comes to Bhagavath anubhavam . Some examples are : "Vyyaham VaazhvitthAr vandhAr "( the One who brought life to this earth has arrived ). "vaNmai udan Varam taruvAr vandhAr " (The One , who showers us with the most generous boons has arrived ). " VaanERa Vazhi tanthAr vandhAr thaamE " ( The Lord , who showed us the way / revealed the upAyam to Srivaikuntam through His Charama slOkam has indeed arrived ). In celebrating the meaning of NaarAyaNa sabdham , Swamy Desikan describes the Lord's arrival here as: " Ulahu udampAit ThAmm UyirAi ninRAr vandhAr " yellArkkum gati aanAr vandhAr thAmE " (Meaning ): The Lord , who has all the chEthanams and the achEthanams as His body has arrived ; the Lord , who is the upAyam and upEyam/Phalan for all has indeed arrived . The chantham of this prabhandham and the deep meanings enshrined in every line of these Tamil ashtakams are without parallel in Bhagavath anubhavam . (6)Panniru Naamam ****************** In this Tamil Prabhandham , Swamy Desikan points out that the twelve Naamams (PunDrams) worn on the body of a Sri VaishNavan are representations of the sacred feet of Lord VaradarAjan . The twelve murthys -- Kesavan ,NaarAyaNan , Maadhavan , Govindhan , VishNu ,Madhusoodhanan , Thrivikraman , Vaamaan , Sridharan HrishIkEsan , PadmanAbhan and DaamOdharan-- are invoked in specific places of the upper torso of a Sri VaishNavan daily and recognized as living there in the form of PuNDram . This is another beautiful prabhandham brimming with the affection of Swami Desikan for Lord VaradarAjan . adiyEn will conclude this series on the visit to Lord VaradarAjan's temple at Kaanchi with one more post based on the anubhavam of the Lord enshrined in Sri VaradarAja PanchAsath . Compression of two sentences in adiyEn's posting ended up in ambiguity. Please be assured that There was no intent to cause confusion among AachArya paramparai. What adiyEn meant was that(1)NadadhUr ammAl was the AchAryan of ApuLLAr of Swamy Desikan's AchArya paramparai and (2)Sudarsana Soori as well as Vadakku Thiryveethip PiLLai (VTP) were participants in the famous Sri Bhaashya KaalakshEpa GhOshti at Sri DevarAja PerumAL temple PrAkAram. When these two different information points got compressed , the confusion has arisen . As is well known , it is not unusual for different AchAryAs to attend the KaalkshEpa GhOshtis of AchAryAs other than their own direct AchAryan . This does not ever diminish the role of the direct AchAryan . Cases in point are that of EmperumAnAr Himself , who had five AchAryAs and yet He is to be considered as the Sishyar of MahA PoorNar . ThiruvAimozhippiLLai is the direct AchAryan in the AchArya Paramparai of Swamy MaNavALa Maamunigal inspite of the fact that Adhi VaNN SatakOpa Jeeyar initiated Sri Vara Vara Muni into SanyAsAsramam . For the Vadakalai SampradhAyins , Sri Vadakku Thiruveethi PiLlai(VTP) is the last AchAryan in their paramparai . The two SampradhAyams branch off thereafter . The Tanmiyan for Sri VTP that we recite is: SrikrishNa Paadha PaadhAbhjE nmaAmi sirasA sadhA Yath prasAdha prabhAvEna Sarvasidhdir abhUn mama There sould not however be any confusion on the most fundamental fact about Sri VTP being the Thiruvadi (Direct disciple ) of Swamy NampiLLai and the author of Eedu Grantham. Thanks for commenting on this eminently avoidable slip in my writing and correcting it quickly . For completion of the information , the SaamAsrayaNa Paramparai down to Adhi VaNN SatakOpa Jeeyar for the Vadakalai SampradhAyins is : Sri VTP --> His Prasishyar , KidAmpi SrirangAcchAr of ThirunArAyaNapuram --> His kumarar , Sri KesavaacchAr of ThirunArAyaNapuram--> His KumArar , Sri SrinivAsAcchAr of ThirunArAyaNapuram , who is known as DhramiDa aamnAya Desikan or the expert in Tamil Dhivya Prabhandham--> His Son , Sri KesavAcchAr Swamy of ThirunArAyaNapuram , the father of Adhi VaNN SatakOpan , who was named SrinivAsaachAr at birth and became the sishyar of GatikAsatham ammAL of Kanchipuram ( the fifth descendant of NadadhUr ammAl ). AdiyEn has writeen extensively about the eulogies of Thirukkacchi Nampi and Sri MaNavALa MaamunigaL earlier in Bhakthi list Postings and hence adiyEn will focus mostly on Swamy Desikan's anubhavam . Thirukkacchi Nampi's Sri DevarAjAshtakam ***************************************** Thirukkacchi Nampi ( Sri Kaanchi PoorNar ) is known as "VaradhAngri SadhA sangha rasAyana PaarAyaNar "(i-e)., One , who is always engaged in affectionate sevai/kaimkaryam to the sacred feet of the Lord VaradharAjan . He has been hailed as "DevarAja DayA Paathram " or the One , who was the object of the special affection of Sri Varadhan . The salutations to the PraNathArthihara Prabhu of Hasthi Sailam starts with Thirukkacchi Nampi's prapatthi in the first slOkam of this ashtakam : " namasthE HasthisailEsa Srimann! ambhuja lOchana SaraNam thvAm prapannOsmi PraNathArthihara achyutha " In the next slOkam , Thirukkacchi NampigaL expresses his fear of trespasses and includes a powerful word ( amaryAtham) from His AchAryan's (AlavandhAr's - sthOthra rathnam )to show his nirvEdham : " paapIyAmsam amaryAtham paahi maam Varadha PrabhO !" The overflowing affection of this special Bhakthar of the Lord is housed in his moving prayers : "DevarAja DhayA sindhO ! Deva Deva ! JagathpathE ! kaaruNyAmrutha AanIthai: SeethaLi: abhishincha Maam " (meaning ) Oh Ocean of DhayA ! Oh DevarAjA ! Oh the supreme Lord of the Universe ! Please banish my samsAric thApams through your kataaksha-amrutham soaking me ! The Lord broke His archA silence and spoke to Thirukkacchi Nampi and looked forward to his Fan service ( ThiruvAlavatta Kaimkaryam )and sent His six words to AchArya RaamAnujA through him . RamyajAmathru Muni's ( MaNavALa Maamuni's)MangaLam *************************************************** Sri MaNavALa MaamunigaL focuses on the dhayA svarUpam of the Lord of Kaanchi and salutes the PEraruLALa Tattvam in the very first slOkam : " VaradhAya DhayAdhAmnE DheerOdhArAya MangaLam " Here Sri MunigaL recognizes the Lord not only as the embodiment of DhayA , but also as the Dheeran and oudhAryavanthan ( the most generous one as PEraruLAlan ). Sri MaNavALa Maamunigal salutes the Lord as " VaarijAkshan " ( SenthAmaraik KaNNan ) and AbhIshta Phala DhAyakan ( vENDum Varam Vaari Vaari Koduppavan) , PuNyakOti NivAsakan ( One who resides under the PuNyakOti VimAnam ) . The essence of ThiruvAimozhi Passage ( Kaachina PaRavai oornthu ponmalain meemisaik kaarmuhil pOl ) has been captured in the following slOkam section : " Kaanchanaachala SrungAgra KaaLamEgAnusAriNE " The Lord is visulaized here as the dayA-laden dark cloud on top of the golden mountain of Hasthigiri. He concludes this MangaLaasAsanam of the Lord with a moving acknowledgement of Lord Varadhan's abundant Krupai: " MathangajAdhri ThungAgrassrunga srungAra VarshmaNE MahAkrupaaya math rakshA dhIkshithAyAsthu MangaLam " (meaning ): adiyEn's pallANDu to the Lord who is like a jewel adorning the high peak of Hasthigiri ! Hail to the Most merciful Lord , who has taken the dheekshA of blessing adiyEn with His protection . These are indeed moving MangaLAsAsanam passages from Sri MaamunigaL's Sri DevarAja MangaLam . Swamy Desikan's adoration in Sri VaradarAja PanchAsath ******************************************************** Sri Hasthi Saila SikarOjwala PaarijAtham , Sri VaradharAjan captivated the mind of Swamy Desikan so much that he confessed that he prefers the Lord's ArchAvathAram at Kaanchi over the sevai of Parama Padha Naathan at Sri Vaikuntam ( Sathyam sabhE VaaraNa saila Naatha Vaikunta vaasEpi namEabhilAsha:). Swamy composed a SuprabhAtha SlOakm for the Lord . He also described the ever changing beauty of the Lord during His thsavam days and concluded : thvam chEth prasIdhasi tavAsmi samIpathascchEth thvayyasthi bhakthiranagA KarisailnAtha samsrujyathE yadhi cha dAsa jana: thvadheeya: SamsAra yEsha Bhagavann apavargha yEva (Meaning ): Oh Lord of Hasthigiri ! This sad samsAric world will verily become Moksha KshEthram (aanandha nilyam ), if Your face shows pleasure on seeing diyEn displaying special bhakthi for You , while being near You in the company of Your dear BhakthAs . Swamy salutes Lord VaradhrAjan as PanchAvathAran ( Param , vyUham , Vibhavam , archai and antharyAmi Brahmam ) and also as DasAvathAran . Finally , he exclaims in wonderment : kim naama na asi ? Is there anything that You are not (nee yethuvAhatthAn illai?). Swamy Desikan salutes the Bhaagavatha GhOshti assembled to have His sevai and declares that these BhagavathAs are dhanyAs ( the blessed Ones ) : " Varadha Tava vilOkayanthi DhanyA : " Swamy sings ThirupaLLIyezucchi to the Lord and prays for Him to reside in that SuprabhAtha kOlam in his heart always: "paNipathi sayaneeyAth utthithasthvam PrabhAthE Varadha Sathatham antharmAnasam sannidhEyA :" Swamy reminds the Lord that it is His Sankalpam that is the mightiest help for his protection : "sankalpa yEva BhavathO nipuNa: sahaaya:" Swamy pleads with the Lord and says: You have brought me safely upto this point (yEthavathIm gamayithu: padhavIm dhayAlO: ).What trouble is there to guide my path for the remaining small period of my life here ? None. ( seshdAhvalEsa nayanE ka iva athibhAra: ?). SwamY Desikan also acknowledgs that it is the BhagavAn's katAksham , which results in the SadAchArya PrApthi . He also reveals through His dialog with the Lord of Hasthigiri that the Lord alone serves as the bridge (sEthu) to attain Him ( thvAmEva ganthumasi sEthu: abhangurasthvam ) . Elsewhere , Swamy Desikan explains to us the tattvam of Sri Varadha sEthu and the blessings arising from that sEthu darsanam : " thamm veekshya sEthum adhunApi SarIravantha: sarvE shaDUrmi bhauLam jaladhim taranthi " Swamy points out that even the sight ( veekshaNam ) of this most merciful sEthu (Varadhan )is sufficient to cross safely the terrifying ocean with the six kinds of gigantic waves ( Kaamam , kOpam, lObham ,mOham , madham and Maathsaryam ). adiyEn will conclude this visit to Sri VaradharAjan Sannidhi with the recitation of a slOkam from the VaradhAbhimAna Sahasram: prapanna Jana samrakshA dheeksithAya nirantharam > Sri VaishNava sriyOttheepdha VaibhavAya asthu MangaLam " (meaning ): Hail to the Lord of Hasthigiri , who has taken the permanent vow of protecting well those , who has performed prapatthi at His sacred feet ! Hail to the Lord , who has the reputation of enhancing the VaishNava Sri of His bhakthAs and BhaagavathAs ! SudarsanAzhwAn's archA silai is awe inspiring to behold . The slOka Vaakyams from Swamy Desikan's profound SudarsanAshtakam went through my mind : "praharaNagrAma maNDitha , Parijana thrANa paNDitha Jaya Jaya Sri Sudarsana , Jaya Jaya Sri Sudarsana " Lord Sudarsanan shining resplendently as Hethi Raajan and nEmi Naathan on the right hand of Lord VaradarAjan is indeed PraharaNa grAma MaNDithan ( One who is beautified by the assembly of weapons adorning His sixteen hands ); He is indeed Parijana ThrANa PaNDithan ( The expert in protecting His adiyavars like AmbharIshan ). With the tall flames as His hair , he is ready to destroy the enemies of BhagavathAs . Sudarsana Prabhu is PraNathArthihara prabhu and is able to destroy the enemies of the Lord with His hoomkAram alone . The darsanam of Him in consecrated temples like at Kaanchi ,KumbakONam and Srirangam burns away all paapams : "hoomkAra Bhairavam bheemam PraNathArhtiharam prabhum Sarva paapa prasamanam PRAPADHYEHAM SUDARSANAM " -- Sri SudarsanAshtakam : Verse 5 In the Sudarsana) Kavaacham , Ahirbhudhnyan ( Lord Sivan) is the Rishi ; the chandhas is anushtup ; the empowering Lord is Sri Sudarsana- MahA Nrusimhan ; The sakthi is Sudarsanam ; the viniyOgam is " mama sarva rakshArhtE Sri Sudarsana-Purusha-Sri Nrusimha PreethyarthE japE viniyOga: " Thus , there is no Sudarsanan without Lord Narasimhan . We had the darsanam of Lord Narasimhan next in that Sudarsana-Narasimha Vigraham at this sannidhi . Here , Lord Narasimhan has four chakrams in His four hands . That (Four Chakrams)is also the emblem of Lord Kesavan in Panniru ThirunAmam . When we adorn the ThirumaNN on our forehead first , we say "KesavAya Nama: , Chathuschakram NamasyAmi Kesavam Kanaka Prabham " for our protection of the Sri VaishNava Sri. That is why , we also say "KesavA " and invoke His name sanctified by the four chakrams in four dirctions , when we step out of our residences on important occasions. On the ArchA Vigraham , One can have the darsanam of the dwAdasa Moorthis fitting Sriman NaarAyaNA's twelve ThirunAmams( Kesavan, NaarayaNan , Madhavan , Govindhan , VishNu , Madhusoodhanan, Thrivikraman, Vaamanan , Sridharan ,HrishIkEsan , PadhmanAbhan and DhAmOdharan ). The Uthsavar has 8 weapons in His 8 hands compared to th 16 weapons adorning the sixteen hands of Moolavar, Sudarsana-Nrusimhan . The related prayer to Sudarsana-Narasimhan in Sri Sudarsana Kavacham is: " Sudarsana NrusimhO mE Sareeram paathu sarvadhA ". (May the Sudarsana-Nrusimhan protect this body of mine always to make it fit for His AarAdhanam). There were many beautiful and big Sudarsana- Nrusimha SaaLagrAmams at this Sannidhi .We left after this eye-filling sevai of Sudarsanar to AchArya RaamAnujA Sannidhi in the North West(?) section of the Temple of Sri VaradharAjan . AchArya RaamAnujA's anugraham ******************************* The puNyam from completing the AchArya RaamAnujA and His satAri Kaimkaryam with the help of all BhakthAs propelled us perhaps to His Sannidhi. There , the life-like Moolavar sitting in the company of all AzhwArs blessed us. Earlier adiyEn mentioned that the archakar at Sri PerumbhUthUr RaamAnujA's Sannidhi presented the KhAshAyam from the ThirumEni of Udayavar to clothe the SatAri during its journey to Melkote. Another miracle happened here at Kaaanchi. The Archakar at Udayavar Sannidhi presented another khAshAya vasthram adorning the upper torso of the Moolavar and gave it to us to house the navarathna SatAri. It was such a spontaneous act on the archakar's part , which can only be understood as originating from the grace of our AchArya Saarvabhouman , who gave us Sri Bhaashyam. Mudali AaNDAn (Sri RaamAnuja SatAri) -on his way to ThiunArAyaNapuram to join His AchAryan at His sannidhi- was thus fully housed in the divine warmth of His AchAryan's ochre robes from SriperumbhUthUr ( His AchAryan's place of birth) and Kaanchipuram ( His AchAryan's dhivya desam , where He entered into SanyAsAsramam ). Thus started the Journey to ThirunArAyanapuram by plane and car from Chennai to Melkote with the satAri having the sambhandham of many EmperumAns , EmperumAnAr and AchArya PurushAs At Melkote ,adiyEn was the guest of Dr.Lakshmi ThaathAchAr Swamy , the Director of the Melkote Sanskrit Academy .He belongs to the Thaatha Desika Vamsam as well as Thirumalai ANDAn PiLLai Vamsam , which has the distinction of performing Pushpa Kaimkaryam to lord SrinivAsan at Thirumalai at the behest of AchArya RaamAnujA .Dr. M.A.Alwar , the Naveena NyAyam expert teaching this topic as a faculty at the Mysore Sanskrit College and adiyEn's partner in the AchArya RaamAnujA CD ROM project is the son of Dr.Lakshmi ThaathAchAr Swamy . Not enough can be said about the saathvic nature of this family, their unfailing hospitality to the visitors to Melkote , and their tradition of Scholarship in ubhaya VedAntham. AdiyEn will write in the next few postings about : (1) The time spent at the Sanskrit Academy in the company of Sri Lakshmi ThAthAchAr Swamy after the first sevai of Lord ThirunArAyaNan and Udayavar ( Feb 10 , the sixth day of the navAham). (2) The Morning of Consecration of the SatAri for AchArya RaamAnujA at the Yaaga SaalA prior to travel of the satAri to His sannidhi and the afternoon visit to Jna~napirAN Sannidhi ( the sixteen feet Moolavar of Sri Lakshmi Varahan from HoysaLA times enshrined in ekAntham at a tiny hamlet outside Melkote) and conversations with a great Sri VaishNavite scholar ,Kotthimangalam Sri VaradAchAr Swamy (February 11 and the seventh day of the NavAham). (3) The visit to Srirangapattinam on the Ratha Sapthami day and additional visits to some of the Pancha NaarAyaNa KshEthrams close to ThoNDanUr , which were constructed by Mudali ANDAn at the request of AchArya RaamAnujA to spread the glorious message of Sri VaishNavam in His adopted land of KarnAtakA ( February 12th and the eighth day of the NavAham ). AchArya RaamAnujA's 900th anniversary of entrance to Melkote was celebrated few months ago at Melkote by the Sanskrit Academy and the Sri Vaishnava AchArya Kulams . MA was offered to Bhagavan Ramanuja was taken to the premises of the huge "Yaaga Shaalai" of the temple ; all the arrangements had been made there for the "Pratishtha" procedures according to the temple traditions that have been in vogue from AchArya RaamAnujA's time . The Main Archakar (Sri SampathkumAra Bhattar) had made exquisite arrangements. There were two "goshthi-s", one for Veda Parayanam, and the other for Divya Prabandham. Even as the chantings began, the Homam for the consecration of the Mudali Andanwas commenced amidst the sunAdham of the big Ghanta-s reminding one of Swamy Desikan's presence . All the priests and other Srivaishnavas of all Melkote sannidhis were present on this auspicious occassion, and it was a privelege in itself to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime ceremony . The Procedures, as ordained in our Sastras, took about two hours, and at the end of it, the Mudali Andan underwent "Maha Samprokshanam" with the sacred water of the Kalsams that had the consecrated holy water, even as the Purusha Suktam was being chanted. The PurNAhuthi was a blessed sight to experience . After this , Sattu murai took place at the Yaaga saalai for the Mudali Andan with paasurams from Tiruppavai, and especially Ramanuja Nuttrandaadi, since the Satari (MA) was for Bhagavan Ramanuja. Then the Mudali Andan (MA) was taken in a procession to the main sanctum sanctorum of Lord Tirunarayana with Sri SampathkumAra Bhattar leading the way and the Mudali ANdAn resting on the head of a senior Bhattar .The nadhasvaram was played by the temple artists. When Mudali Andan reached the Sannidhi of ThirunArAyaNan , it was placed beside the divine feet of the Lord to incorporate the "Saannidhyam" of the Lord into the MA. Later , special naivEdhyams were offered to the MA in the divine presence of all the Srivaishnavas. KarpUra Aaratthi for the Lord was performed . All the Sriviashnavas present on the occassion were honoured in a befitting manner. Everybody present there were all praise for those who had conceptualised and realised such a moving and pioneering kainkaryam. AdiyEn's special thanks goes to the fifteen plus contributors from Bangalore and many parts of USA , who made this dream come true. AdiyEn offers my PraNAmam to all these BhagavathAs .After two days of residence at the Lord's feet , MA found his permanent home at the side of his AchAryan , who considered him as His Pavithram and Thiruvadi (SatAri). There rests our MA for times to come blessing the sEvArhtis , who arrive at his AchAryan's sannidhi. Afternoon of February 11 , 2000 ******************************** After lunch , we visited two places of great interest both from the point of Srivaishnava faith as well as the artistic excellence associated with HoysaLaa dynasty.. First stop was at a place known as Varaaha-Naatha-kalla-halli" , which is 35 miles from Melkote; the backroads were travelled and the country side looked as though not much has happened since India gainedindependence . While on the way, we were able thus to experience what traditional India is like, with the farms, grazing cattle and the like for which rural India is famous. The serene atmosphere and undisturbed pace of life here is enchanting and can be fathomed only by experiencing it. After about an hour and half of journey, we arrived at a temple-like structure -- the original structure is in ruins now -- and the priest from the nearby village accompanied us to facilitate the darsan of the Lord. Even as the doors of the sanctum sanctorum opened , we were all stunned to behold the divine Moorthi of Lord Varaaha Swami, with Goddess Lakshmi seated on his left side .. the divine idol is an 18 feet monolith. The beauty of the idol transfixed us and we could not take our eyes away from the subhAsrayam of the Lord holding MahA Lakshmi ThAyar with such tenderness . We could not turn our to see anything else for a long , long time. Then an abridged (Laghu)Tiruvaaradhanam took place and prasadam was distributed to all those present there. Photographs have been taken and will be made available electronically on request. Next, we travelled back towards Melkote, and on the way visited the Laxmi Narayana Temple at a place called "Hosa Holalu". This temple is a miniature of the famous Belur temple near Hassan in Karnataka in South India, internationally known for its exquisite miniature carvings . Througout this less known temple-both inside and outside- there are abyndant artistic treasures as testaments to the HoysaLA art . This site has been declared as a protected monument by the Archeological department of the Nation . Here , there are three Sannidhis, viz. Laxmi Narayana, Laxmi Narasimha and Gopala Krishna respectively. On the nava ranga mantapam ceilings , there are nine diffrent types of beautiful carvings of diffrent gods like ashta dik palakaas et al . The beautiful array of stone pillars with 12, 24, 48, 96 edges respectively are a lasting tribute to the skills of the HoysalA stone carvers . Beautiful classical lathe work can also be enkoyed in other parts of the temple complex. This temple too is one of the great treasures of Karnataka and ranks among the best of "Hoysala" architectural treasures . The evening was spent at the Sannidhi of ThirunArAyaNapuram as the priests were preparing for the Ratha Sapthami celebrations next day. We retired for the night at the most comfortable and tranquil environment of the Melkote Sanskrit Academy .The additional events relating to this day has been carried over to the next posting at its beginning . During the visit to these places, we had the previlege of having the esteemed company of Sri U.Ve. Kottamangalam Varadacharya Swami, who is a walking encyclopeadia in the real sense of all our Sastras, and all the Darsanas. He has an experience of 60 years in these fileds, and was the premier-most sishya of the legendary Sri Abhinava Ranganatha Brahma Tantra Parakala Swamy, the potiff of the Parakala Mutt. Under this revered AchAryan , three Varadacharya-s (popularly known as "Varada-traya") studied simultaneously ; they were Sri UVE SMS Varadacharya, SRI UVE ES Varadacharya, and the present Swami. They were most proficient in Vyakarana(known as Pada Shaastra), Mimamsa(known as Vaakya Shaastra) and Nyaya/Tarka Sastra (known as Pramana Shaastra), and Visistadwaita Vedanta was the common specialisation of each of them. Of the three, ES Varadacharya, is no more. Under the feet of the above mentioned SRi Sri Parakala Swamy, the three VaradhAs used to study as follows : A particular Adhikarana from the Brahma Sutra/Sri Bhashya would be given as a topic beforehand. All the three Varadacharyas were to make extensive studies about that Adhikarana not only from the point of view of their own Sastras, but also from the view-point of the Advaitins and the Dwaitins. Then under the Swami, after the introductory discourse by the Swami Himself, the three Varadacharyas had to present the views of different points of view expressed in different texts pertaining to different authors owing allegiance to different systems of philosophy. Then extensive and intensive debate would take place and ultimately the Parakala Swamy would announce the result of the delibarations. This continuously happened for about 25 years, and this in itself is a pointer to the great scholarship of these great Varadacharya-s. Of these three Sri U.Ve. Kottamangalam Varadacharya Swami accompanied us, and enlightened us about the burning issues of today in the fileds of philosophy, religion, society etc , which had to be solved in a way that is true to the path followed by our Poorva Acharyas. This meeting with a living legend too is one of the most memorable highlights of our visit. Sriman M.A.Alwar has the bhAgyam of receiving instructions on the fine points of Our SampradhAyam from this MahAn . Later, we arrived back at Melkote, and since we were extremly tired, cancelled a visit to the temple, and meanwhile held discussions about future Multimedia CD Rom Projects on our Sampradayam, like the one on Bhagavan Ramanuja that has reached many of you. Both the TennAchArya and Vadakalai version of Bhagavath RaamAnujA CD ROM is still available for those , who wish to acquire them for their private libraries. The Ratha Sapthami day at Melkote ********************************** The next day, the 12th of Feb, was "Ratha Saptami" , a great "Parva" day, the day when the Sun-God is said to have made his first appearnce. According to our Sastras, Surya-Bhagavan is none other than Surya-Narayana, and to commemorate this auspicious day, Lord Selvappillai mounts the "Surya-Mandala-Vahana", or the mount of the Surya, with Aruna, the charioteer of Surya and his horses placed in front, as if leading the Surya. The procession in the Mada-Veedhis was exquisite and it is difficult for Bhagavatas to forget such a beautiful and divine sight. We also visited the temple once again and had a close darsan of all the dieties at the temple. After finalising our discussions with Sriman UVE Lakshmi Thathachar, the Director of the Academy of Sanskrit Research(a separate note on this will be written shortly), an organisation devoted to the presevration of our rich cultural heritage, especailly pertaining to Srivaishvava / Visistadwaita, we had Phala-Ahararam and left for Thondanur, where Bhagavan Ramanuja arrived first before visiting Melkote. There , we visited first the "Moti-Talab", a breathtakingly big tank said to have been built at the niyamanam of Bhagavan Ramanuja Himself. Thereafter , we visited the shrine of Nambi Narayana, a big temple, renovated recently and well maintained. Here , the speciality is that Nambi Naryana has the Chakra in his left hand the Sankha in the right as in ThirukkOyilUr , and this is said to be so, since he had to do Samashrayanam to "Thondanur Nambi" a contemporary and later disciple of Bhagavan Ramanuja when he visited that place. Also present in that temple is a beautiful stone "PeeTha" where Bhagavan Ramanuja used to sit while delivering Kalakshepams. Later, we visited the Krishna Temple which is adjacent to the Nambi Temple. Here we had the darsan ofthe most beautiful Krishna (both Mulavar and Utsavar) . The speciality of this Krishna is that while other Krishna-s every where have their right foot forward, this Krishna has his left foot forward. The temple too is well renovated and maintained, and in the adjoining mantaps, different classes for children are held. It is cool and serene and ideal for eductaion, and it brought us visions of how Gurukula would have been in ancient times. After having the darsan at these two shines, we proceeded to Sriranga Patna to have the darsan of Lord Ranganatha. We had to skip another shrine i.e. that of Lakshmi Nrusimha and Bhagavan Ramanuja, where Bhagavan Ramanuja is said to have answered thousands of Jains simultaneously by having thousand mouths in the form of Adishesha . It is a pity that the presssures of time would not permit such a visit. We arrived next at Sriranga Patna on this Ratha Sapthami day . At Sriranaga Patna, which is known as "Aadi Ranga", we had the darsan of the most beautiful Ranganatha with Kaveri Thayar at his feet. The beauty of this Ranganatha is beyond description , and can be only experienced by those who have the darsan of the Lord, who is all splendour. It was a major festival day at Srirangapatnam . Huge crowds were at the sannidhis . Outside , the vendors were selling ripe banana fruits into which strands of fragrant Marukkozhunthu were inserted . The young people were showing off by throwing these " banana missiles " at the target of the kumbham of the ratham in which Uthsavar was resting after the Ratha Sapthami Journey . The Kumbham was at a pretty high level and most of the people missed hitting the Kumbham. The folklore is that any one , who hits the Kumbham on this day with the banana missiles will be blessed with great Isvaryam . Uthsavar was well protected with screens so that no errant missile came His way. It was a scene of great joy with people of all ages mingling and having a good time on this sacred day of uthsavam . We dropped Dr.M.A.Alwar at Mysore . One can not thank him and his family enough for the warmth of their reception and hospitality during this visit to Melkote and environs . It was a great bhAgyam to be with this well known AchArya PurushA Family belonging to AnandANpiLLai Vamsam , celebrated for its pushpa Kamkaryam to Lord Srinivaasan of Thirumalai at the request of AchArya RaamAnujA . After saying good bye to Dr.Alwar ,we arrived at the Mysore Railway Station to catch the ShatAbdhi Express for our trip back to Chennai . Thus ended the eighth day of NavAham , which was one of the three days spent in Karnataka offering worship at places associated with the digh vijayam of Achaarya RaamAnuja some 900 years ago. AdiyEn had grand plans to have the SevA BhAgyam of ThiruvenkatamudayAn at Thirumalai . My nephew had arranged two tickets for "ThidIr KalyANam" ( sudden KalyANam ) for the dhivya Dampathis , which would have permitted ten members of the family to attend the unplanned ThirukkalyANam for Sri VenkatEswaran and the darsanam of the Moolavar . Due to the overflow of activities from the previous day (Ratha sapthami ) , the devasthAnam decided that there will not be any unscheduled activities on Feb 13 . Hence , we had to cancel the day trip to Thiruppathi . Although adiyEn had the sevai of Sri VenkatAchalapathi at DakshiNa Thiruppathi ( Sri OppilA appan at Oppiliappan Koil ) at the very beginning of this trip on Thai SravaNam day , adiyEn tried have the sevai of the Lord at Utthara Thiruppathi this time . He seems to be telling that adiyEn should complete the ongoing work (Kaimkarya Poorthi) on His Home Pages (http://srimannarayana.homepage.com/index.html) before climbing His hills to be blessed with His visEsha Sevai . ThiruvenkatamudayAn blessed me soon enough with His sevai at Singapore SrinivAsa PerumAL temple , where a Bhattar from OppilA-appan Koil is serving the Lord. Thus the cycle that started at ThiruviNNagar was completed at Simhapuri regarding Lord SrinivAsan's sevai . Ninth day was devoted to reflections on the just- concluded visit to Melukote and the extraordinary opportunity to spend significant quality time at the Sanskrit Academy of Research as a guest of UVe. Dr.Lakshmi TatAchAr Swamy of the AnandANN PiLLai Vamsam . The unparalleled services rendered by Dr.TatachAr Swamy for the preservation and propagation of our illustrious Udayavar sampradhAyam are testaments to his scholarship, dedication and creativity . AdiyEn has no doubt that the lamp that is being lit on the Yadhugiri Hills will serve as a beacon in times , when there will be concerns about dangers to our samprahdAyam due to the advance of kali Yugam . AdiyEn will write about the highlights of the visit to the Sanskrit Academy of Research later . For now , adiyEn would like to focus on the happenings at " Melukote Through the Ages ". Sriman TatAchAr Swamy presented me with a monumental monograph entitled , " MelukOte Through the Ages " , a summary of the research papers from a special conference organized by the Academy during 1998 in anticipation of the 900th anniversary of the entrance of AchArya RaamAnujA into MelukOte in 1999 . This monograph has encyclopediac content and has been a source of rarely available information on the happenings at Melukote over centuries. AdiyEn will summarize/share the highlights EXCLUSIVELY from this monograph in the presentation style for easy reading. Additional details on the life and works of AchArya RaamAnujA are captured in the recently released CD ROM , where it has been my privelege to work with Dr.M.A. Alwar , the talented son of Dr.TatachAr. HAPPENINGS AT MELUKOTE AND REFLECTIONS ON THEM *********************************************** ** AchArya RaamAnujA lived on this earth for 120 blessed years (1017-1137 A.D.). He was 82 years old , when He came to Melukote and was 94 , when He returned to Srirangam . ** AchArya RaamAnujA renovated the temple of ThirunArAyaNan on a BahudhAnya Samvatsara , Makra mAsa , Sukla Paksha ,Chathurdasi day , when the birth star of Lord Raamachandran ( Punarvasu ) was in ascendance . on the Christian calendar , it was between January and February of the year 1099 . ** AchArya RaamAnujA peformed the AarAdhanam for ThirunArAyaNan for the first three days and then asked Srirangaraja Bhattar to take over and to perform the Lord's AarAdhanam according to PaancharAthrA Aagamaa rules propounded in Isvara SamhithA . ** AchArya RaamAnujA presented us with the famous slOkam that we recite every day to remind ourselves about the importance of MelukOte (yadhusailam ): " Sriranga-MangaLa-MaNim KaruNA-nivAsam Sri VenkatAdhri SikarAlaya KaaLamEgham Sri Hasthisaila sikaOjvala paarijAtham Srisam namaami Sirasa Yadhusaila dheepam " Here, Srirangam is recognized as the Adhi KshEthram and Yadhu Sailam as the antha kshEthram . Thirumalai and Kaanchipuram are the two madhya KshEthrams . Sri M.D.RangarAjan goes on to connect the commentaries of PoorvAchAryAs on the first ThiruvAimozhi paasuram to this slokam : a. "UyarvaRa uyarnalam udayavan yavanavan "referring to SrirangarAjan (first line of the above slOkam ) b. "MayaRvaRa madhinalam aruLinan yavanavan" referring to ThiruvEnkatamudayAn of sapthagiri(second line of the above slOkam ). c. "ayaRvaRum amarargaL adhipati yavanavan" referring to PeraruLALan of Hasthigiri (Third line of the above slOkam ). d. "TuyaRaRu sudaraDi thozhuthezhen mananE " referring to ThirunArAyaNan of MelukOte (Fourth line of the slOkam ). Here Swamy NammAzhwAr recommends to his mind to banish its sufferings by surrendering unto HIM at Yadhugiri. ** Here at MelukOte, the first ThiruvArAdhanam is for AchArya RaamAnujA ; the AarAdhanam at the main shrine of ThirunArAyaNan follows next . ** The tradition at this temple is to stop at the Bali peetam and bow towards RaamAnujA's sannidhi and then to ThirunArAyaNan in recognition of the "Charama parva Nishtai ", according to which the reverence for the AchAryA comes before that for the PerumAL ( a la Madhura kavi AzhwAr). ** Here in front of what is today his sannidhi , AchArya RaamAnujA taught Bhagavath Vishayam to three great future AchAryAs : ThiruvAimozhip PiLLai , the Guru of Sri MaNavALa MaamunigaL ,ThirunArAyaNapuratthu Aayi and ThiruvAimozhi AacchAn . ** The ThiruvAimozhi decad , " OrunAyakamAi " was presnted by AchArya RaamAnujA on the Punarvasu uthsavam day and is recited even today every Hastha Nakshathram during the SaatthumuRai. Hastham is PerumAL's Nakashathram here. ** An unique future of this Thiruppathi is that Madhurakavi AzhwAr's " KaNNInuNN SiRutthAMpu " is recited instead of the usual "ThiruppallANDu " during Dhivya Prabhandha PaarAyaNam . This is in recognition of the mahOpakAram of Madhura Kavi and Naatha Muni in giving us the sacred collect of 4000 . After this ,ThiruppallANDu , RaamAnujar's Taniyan ( describing him as 'MaRanadi PaNinduindavan"), Taniyan for NammAzhwAr and then the taniyans for the AlwArs are recitd in that order. This was the sampradhAyam established by AchArya RaamAnujA 900 years ago and followed even today. ** The inspiration to AchArya RaamAnujA came form here, when he composed : " Srimanna Sriranga SriyamanupadravAmy anudhinam samvardhaya " ( Let Sriman NaarAyaNA , the One , who always has the Sri at His feet see to it that the wealth of Srirangam grows day by day without any hindrance). The important link is that Sri Devi is at the Thiruvadi of ThirunArAyaNan here unlike in the other KshEthrams , where She resides on His Chest .AchArya RaamAnujA had this special aspect of ThirunArAyaNan here in His mind . ** One of the final Six instructions of RaamAnujA to his disciples at Srirangam was to construct a hut at Yadhu Sailam and spend their last days there . Thus even during His last moments on this earth , AchArya RaamAnujA's thoughts were on ThirunArAyaNapuram. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit SrimathE RaamAnujAya nama: HAPPENINGS AT MELUKOTE THRU THE AGES (CONTINUED ): ************************************************* In this posting , we will cover the foundation stone laid by AchArya RaamAnujA for the ThiruvArAdhanam of the Lord and conductance of the Lord's uthsavams . These rules laid out by him in his niyamanappadi ( the temple injunctions ) are carried out largely even today . Here , AchArya RaamAnuja established the rules and regulations for the administration of the temple and the AarAdhanam for ThirunArAyaNan . The genius of our AchAryan in Management Sciences is reflected in the text of the Niyamanppadi (The Temple Injunctions). The text is on palm leaves , which has the imprint of his signature at the end in grantha lipi as "IrAmAnusan ". AdiyEn had the blessings of sevai of this rare olai chuvadi at the house of the AarAdhakar of the RaamAnujar Sannidhi . Our revered AchAryan's hand writing is steady and strong even at His Old age . In His Niyamanppadi , the far-seeing AchArya established the religious institutions ,offices, kaimkaryams and the maryAdhais for the duties assigned to the kaimkarya- parAs in exquisite detail . He created the ideal conditions for the continuation of the Kaimkaryams without any interruptions . His choice of the right person for the differnet positions was uncanny. The overall solidarity of the system was thus established for times to come . He divided the temple duties and housed them in 7 departments. He created 36 offices in those 7 departments to cover the 57 services for the Lord . His key people appointments were: (1)PaancharAthra Agamic Scholar (SrirangarAja Bhattar from Srirangam ) as the Main Aaradhakar. This scholar belonged to the OupagAyana gOthram , KAtyAyana soothram , and followed the Sukla Yajur Vedha sAkhai. Even today , the PradhAna Aaradhakar has these credentials .Ten services for the Lord ( ThiruvArAdhanam , Theertha, TuLasi prasAdham distribution , ChAmaram serrvice , and preparation of the Madhuparkam were part of the six direct duties). Sri RangarAja Bhattar was named the PradhAna Aaradhakar (not sthAnikar) of the Lord. Four separate sthAnikars were appointed to help him .Some of his duties were to be carried out by others such as the supervision of four more kaimkaryams done by others ( AlankAram , upkeep of jewels , calling for naivEdhyam and NaivEdhyam preparation ). (2)The First sthAnikar appointed by our AchAryan with additional 9 specific duties came from Vasishta gOthram , Jaimini Soothram and was Saama Vedha saakhA adhyAyi. Among nine duties assigned to him were the supervision of Rg Veda pArAyaNam , Vaadhyam , parimaLam , Nruthyam and Geetham during AarAdhanam . This sthAnikar's name was Anaantha Bhattar aka Thiruvananthapura Daasar . (3) The Second SthAnikar with the name of MaalAkAra Daasar belonged to Koundinya gOthram , BodhAyana Soothram and Krishna Yajur Vedam . He had 8 direct responsibilities (fan service , sacred thread , flower garlands et al ); He was indirectly responsible for Yajur Veda PaarAyaNam , JyOthisham et al. (4) The Third sthAnikar appointed by AchAryan also belonged to Vasishta GOthram, Jaimini SaakhA and Saama Vedham like the second sthAnikar . His name was Thirukkurungudi Daasar and was probably a poorva sikhai brahmin like PeriyAzhwAr . He had 8 services directly assigned to him ( SthOtra recital , Gold and Siver Sticks carrying, NaivEdhya PrasAdham distribution , Sandal paste preparation , umbrella holding were his direct duties . Indirect ones were the supervision of Saama Veda PaarAyaNam , blowing of the conch and the beating of drums . (5) The Fourth sthAnikar belonged to Bhaargava GOthram , Jaimini Soothram and Saama vedham .He had the name of YathirAja Daasar aka VishvaksEna Bhattar . He had 8 more services for the Lord among which were the supervision of Atharva Veda PaarAyaNam was one . These sthAnikAs must have been dhvi Vedhis , Thri Vedhis and Chatur Vedhis to supervise a Veda PaarAyaaNam outside their own Vedha paramparai. Between the Prathama AarAdhakar and the four sthAnikAs , 10, 9, 8, 8, 8 ( Total of 43 ) duties for the daily worship were coverd directly and indirrectly . The remaining 9 duties were coverd by Maaran Nambi aka SatakOpa Daasar , ThiruvAli Annan , PoreTTru NaayanAr and ThirunArAyana PerumAL arayar . They belonged to Yajur and Saama Vedhams . Additional sevices at RaamAnjar sannidhi were added later. The overall supervision was entrusted to Sri DesAyi ThirunArayaNa Jeeyar of Sri Yadhugiri yathirAja Matam , which served as " the home of Acharya RaamAnujA " during his twelve years at Melukote. Mudali AanDAn, EmbAr, KidAmbi AacchAn ,SomAsi AndAn from Srimangalam , AnadAlvAn aka AnandaaNpiLLai of KiranganUr , Vaduganambi from narby saaLigramam village joined in the services ordained by their AchAryan at Lord narasimhan's temple on the hill and at Lord ThirunArAyaNan's sannidhi . The nithya , naimitthika and VisEsha uthsvams took place with grandeur under AchArya RaamAnujA's supervision at this yoga BhUmi.Vedic and the Dhivya Prabhandham traditions flourished here . H.H. Srimans Jaggu NarasimhAchAr and R.KrishNa Iyengar point out that AchArya RaamAnujA incorporated the chanting of the hymns of dhivya prabhandhams in a particular order as a part of his temple reforms at MelukOte. This order is followed even today during the various uthsavams and SaathumuRais. The First decad of the Fourth Centum of ThiruvAimozhi ******************************************************* This decad was identified by AchArya RaamAnuja as NammAzhwAr's mangaLAsAsanam for ThirunArAyaNan . The first Paasuram of this decad that attracted the attention of AchArya RaamAnujA is : " oRu naayakamAi OdaulahudanANDavar karunAi kavarntha kaalar sithaihia paanayar perunAdu kaaNa immayilE picchai thaam koLvar THIRUNAARANAN THAALL KAALAM PERAC CHINTHITTHU UYMINO " The fourth line (padham )of the above paasuram has been identified with the Manthra rathnam (Dhvaya manthram ) in Srimath Rahasya Thraya Saaram saluting the charaNa Kamalms of Sriman NaarAyaNan . The meaning of this Paasuram as translated by Dr.V.N.VedAntha Desikan is as follows : "Men, who ruled over vast territories with an unquestioned suzerainity , are one day driven out, and are driven to the plight of living on alms, roaming , unnoticed , in dark night , out of sheer shamefulness. Black dogs chase them and bite their legs. What a fate ! With cheap metal dish on hand , trying to avoid the sight and identification, by people whom he would have sent away when he was on the throne , he now has to live a humble life of begging-- in the same life; that is the worst part of it. So, please learn the ephemeral and fickle nature of prosperity . Contemplate on the Lord's feet (charaNam ) in order to gain real prosperity of salvation . And do it immediately -not putting it off . The reference to Dhvaya manthram is very clear in the fourth paadham of this ThiruvAimozhi(TVM) Paasuram . In the other paasurams , Swamy NammAzhwAr describes the misfortunes befalling the human beings form their heedless pursuit of perishable wealth of different kinds and gives us His UpadEsam based on dhvaya manthrArtha vivaraNam (elaboration ). The examples are : semmin mudit ThirumAlai virainthaDic chErminO--TVM:4.1.2 Meaning: Before all misfortunes cripple you, please seek & gain your salvation by rushing to the sacred feet of Sriman NaarAyaNan with the radiant crown : Sriman NaarAyaNa charaNou SaraNam kuru . KaDisEr ThuzhAi Mudik KaNNan KazhalkaL ninaiminO--TVM:4.1.3 Meaning: (look where all the royal prosperity goes !). Quickly learn hence to concentrate on the holy feet of the Lord with the ThuLasI-adorned crown . PanaitthALL mathakakaLiRattavan padham paNiminO--TVM:4.1.4 Meaning:(this life is far too ephemeral). Please realize this and resort to the feet of of the One Lord , who felled the giant elephant of Kamsan . MaNiminnu mEni namm Maadhavan pEr solli VaazhuminO--TVM:4.1.5 Meaning:( all worldly wealth is perishable ). Hence , it is wise to cling to the feet of our Lord , the imperishable wealth and the embodiment of immense charm and enjoyment. aazhnthAr KadaRp PaLLI aNNal adiyavar aaminO --TVM: 4.1.6 Meaning: ( Life is impermanent ).So , realize that the only permanent thing is the Life of Loving servitude at the feet of the Lord , who is reclining on the ocean-waters almost as if He is waiting for you and me . kOmin ThuzhAi mudi AadhiyansOthi guNangaLE --TVM : 4.1.7 Meaning: Learn to munch , digest and live on, the sweet guNams of the Lord -that food will ever be available and will sustain you forever . paNamkoLL aravaNayAn ThirunAmam padiminO--TVM: 4.1.8 Meaning: Do chant His names , strive for the best goal, not being deluded by mundane pleasures , which also arise from ThirunArAyaNan's blessings . kodimannu puLLudai aNNal KazhalkaL kuRuhiminO--TVM:4.1.9 Meaning: ( even Svargam or Indra"s heaven is to be spurned since it is impermanent and is of limited duration ). Go after the one from which there is no return, the life of nithya kaimkaryam in Sri Vaikuntam. To secure it , you must hover around the Lord's feet .The Lord will lovingly accept you and will not let you go , even if you want to . maRuhalil Isanaip paRRi vidAvidil veedahthE --4.1.10 Meaning: ( Kaivalyam should be rejected as a permanent bliss). The only lasting bliss is the Lord's abode , Sri Vaikuntam . Swamy NammAzhwAr concludes this decad on ThirunArAyaNan and His dhvaya manthram this way for our benefit: " So has SatakOpan sung a thousand verses about the sacred feet of the Lord , pointing them out as the right path for salvation , the life of service to Him .Of them all, whosoever masters this decad on Sriman NaarAyaNan will be freed from all grief and will attain the desired mOksham and nithya- kaimkaryam to the Lord in His supreme abode ". TampirAn Padi's elaboration on ThirunArAyaNapuram ************************************************** TampirAnpadi speculates that the entire ThiruvAimozhi is on the different deities worshipped from ancient times at ThirunArAyanapuram . Many times Swamy NammAzhwAr refers in TVM about : VaNN puhazh NaaraNan ( TVM: 1.2.10 ) Vaazh Puhazh NaaraNan ( TVM: 10.9.1) Selva NaaraNan ( TVM: 1.10.8) ThirunAraNan (TVM: 4.4.1) At MelukOte , all the four forms of NaarAyaNan are present . " VaNN Puhazh NaaraNan " is the One for whom the daily Thirumanjanam is performed . This SnAnabhEran resides by the side of Moolavar. Vaazh Puhazh NaaraNan resides with SellappiLLai, the Uthsavar . He is the BalibhEran. Selva NaaraNan is SelvappiLLai Himself, the uthsavar brought back from Delhi by AchArya RaamAnujar .ThirunAraNan is the main deity ( Moolavar). TampirAnpadi adduces other evidences to conclude that the entire ThiruvAimozhi is about the four NaarAyaNa Moorthys of MelukOte. adiyEn will cover the dhivya Prabhandha anusandhAna kramam at MelukOte during special days of the year as established by AchArya RaamAnujA next. The titles of these three postings would be : 1. Dhivya prabhnadham tradition at ThirunArAyaNapuram during the Uthsavams 2. The Magnificient Kaimkaryam of the Academy of Sanskrit Research to preserve and protect our ancient heritage 3. Avabrutha SnAnam ( the ritual snaanam after performing the Yaagam of SaraNAgathi at the Sacred feet of adiyEn's revered AchAryan , HH Sri Narayana YathIndhra MahA Desikan ) following the trail of Ashta TheerthOthsavam at MelukOte. The source for these postings continues to be the scholarly articles of contributors of the "Melukote Through the Ages" monograph presented to me by Dr.Lakshmi TatachAr Swamy , the Director of the Sanskrit Research Academy . My thanks are to him for helping us access to this treasure trove. In today's posting , adiyEn will cover the unique traditions of Dhivya prabhandham recitation established by AchArya RaamAnujA some 900 years ago for the many uthsavams for ThirunArAyaNan , AzhwArs and AchAryAs at MelukOte. Prior to that , adiyEn will provide an introduction to the Aagamic traditions in support of the Uthsavams . The Uthsavams for the Lord of AshtAksharam ******************************************* Sri Narasaraja Bhattar derives the etymologic origin of the word Uthsavam this way : The word is derived from the root "Su " and the prefix "uth" . " SutE iti savah:" and therfore Uthsava . " Sava " refers to the sorrows of the world . "uth" is to drive away those " Sava:", the sorrows of the world . UthsavAs are then considered as the necessary rites to drive away the sorrows of the world thru celebration of the Lord by the Mumukshus , who wish to attain liberation from the cycles of births and deaths (Moksham ). Such a Mumkushu is expected to perform these uthsavams for the Lord and/or particpate in them . AagamAs and Uthsavam ********************* " The AagamAs are the source texts for the worship of God in His infinite form . Although these AagamA texts owe their allegiance to the VedAs , the mode of worship they recommend is based on the exigencies of the practical aspects of worship. However AagamAs are not directly tracable to the VedAs. " There are distinct differences between the Vedic and Aagamic methods. It is sufficient to say that the Aagamic form of worship supplements the Vedic tradition and does not contradict the Vedic mode. Sri VaishNava AagamAs: ********************** According to Sri VaishNava AagamAs , there are three kinds of Uthsavams : NithyOthsavam , Naimitthikam and Kaamyam.Nithyam covers the daily rituals involved with Bhagavath AarAdhanam carried out at the temples . Naimmithikam is for a nimitthA or specific purpose other than those covered by Kaamyothsavams; latter uthsavams are performed for acquiring the first three of the four purushArthams : Dharma , artha , Kaamam (i-e) for acquiring merit or wealth or objects of sensual gratification . While most of these uthsavams are conducted in public , there are a few , which are conducted privately by the chief priest of the temple. The Uthsavams provide for the fulfilment of a devotee's desire and longings in a way the VedAs have not provided for. Thus Aagama form of worship supplements the Vedic traditions . PaancharAthra Aagamam & worship at MelukOte ********************************************* The PaancharAthra Aagamam is in vogue in MelukOte temple . The mahAthmya portions of the PaancharAthra aagamam housed in Isvara SamhithA , ParamEsvara SamhithA and JayAkhya samhithA refer to the four most important temples for Sri VishNavAs . MelukOte is one of these four. Thirupathi is among the four also , although the worship is by vaikAnasa aagamam . As an aside , there are six claasical samhithAs in PaancharAthra aagamam : The first triad dating to 300 to 500 A.D is constituted by Saathvata , Paushkara and JayAkhya samhithAs. The other three smahithAs serving as commentaries for the first triad date from 600 to 800 A.D. These are : Isavara, ParamEswara and Paadhma SamhithAs. The Isvara samhithA , which is a commentary text on Saathva samhithA has a full chapter on YaadhavAchala (MelukOte) mahAthmyam. The Sanskrit Academy of MelukOte has brought out a critical edition of Isvara SamhithA . It has been suggested that correlation between ParamEswara SamhithA and Srirangam along with correlation between Paadma SamhithA and VishNu Kaanchi would be very fruitful. NithyOthsavams at MelukOte *************************** These are : ** SaathumuRai and Sahasra naamam recital both in the Morning and Evening ** ThiruvandhikkAppu followed by DhIpAraadhanam in the evenings ** During SahasranAma archanai ,KulasEkarA's Mukundha Maalai and AaLavandhAr's sthOthra rathnam are recited ( This is unique to MelukOte). ** Hastha Nakshathram is " the birth star " of ThirunArAyaNan just as Revathi is the one for Lord RanganAthA . On Hastha nakshathram days and the evening of EkAdasi days , ThirunArAyaNan adorns pacchai kaRpUram and is dressed as ThiruvEnkatamudayAn . ** During SankaramaNam , AmAvasyai, DhvAdasi , ChithrA nakshathram days , the dhivya dampathis are taken around the raaja Veedhis . Every Friday evening , the PerumAL (uthsavar) visits ThAyAr Sannidhi . The other uthsavams at MelukOte ******************************** BrahmOthsavam ( Vairamudi sEvai) , AnnakOti uthsavam , PallavOthsavam , ThiruvAdip Pooram , SikyOthsavam , PavithrOthsavam , NavarAthri and Vijaya dasami uthsavams ,KrittikA dhIpOthsavam , Maargazhi ThiruppAvai and MokshOthsavams , Ratha sapthami , AngamaNi uthsavam, aLLum taLLUm Uthsavam, Punarvasu uthsavam , TeppOthsavam and AchArya RaamAnujA's Thirunakshathra Uthsavam are some of the uthsavams spaced around the year . These uthsavams instill in the devotees a sense of spiritual involvement and help to address their spiritual aspirations . AchArya RaamAnujA led the way in the conductance of these uthsavams according to Aagamic injunctions and the rules laid out by AchArya RaamAnujA hold sway even today. In the next posting , we will cover the dhivya prabhandham recitation tradition at these uthsavams. Azhagiya Singar ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam. AdiyEn has already mentioned the importance of the particular decad of Thiruvaimozhi ( 4.1) at this dhivya desam , which is recited on Hastha Nakshathram days . MelukOte's ancient links to dhivya Prabhandham *********************************************** MelukOte has the distinction of preserving dhivya prabhandha GhAnam , much after such a tradition had disappeared in Tamil Naadu . Even today , ThirunArAyaNapuram has an officiating Arayar .This is the only temple outside Tamil Nadu with an Arayar. The credit for the restoration of the lost dhivya Prabhandhams by AchArya Natha Muni with the anugraham of Swamy NammAzhwAr at Thirukkurungudi goes to ThirunArAyaNapuram. AchArya Natha Muni heard first the ThiruvAimozhi decad , "AarAvamudhE adiyEnudalam ninnpaal --" from VangipratthAccciyAr of ThirunArAyaNapuram at KattumannAr Koil .Natha Muni's latter's fervent search for the lost ThiruvAimozhi started from there. AchArya RaamAnujA strengthened that tradition of dhivya GhAnam of Tamil MaRais here. Paraasara Bhattar conquered "Nanjeeyar" at ThirunArAyaNapuram with the power of ThirunedumthANDakam and made him an AchArya Purushan. Unique traditions of reciting Dhivya Prabhandham ************************************************* Here at MelukOte, there are some unique traditons in vogue from AchArya RaamAnujA's time. In every dhivya desam , ThiruppallANDu is recited first . Here, KaNNinuNn SiRutthAmpu of Madhura Kavi AzhwAr is recited first and ThiruppallANDu takes the second place in recitation sequence. This is in recognition of the superiority of th BhagavathA /AchAryA over BhagavAn in Sri VaishNavA tradition . This tradition was also initiated by AchArya RaamAnujA . The recitation of dhivya Prabhandham takes on a significant role at MelukOte. We will summarize the sequences of recital of the Prabhandhams during specific uthsavams for the Lord here. (1) Marghazhi AdhyayanOthsavam ******************************* First 8 days :100 paasurams per day from MudalAyiram , which has approximately 800 paasurams. Next 12 days: ThiruvAimozhi( 1284 paasurams), plus ThirukurunthANDakam and ThirunedunthANDakam of Kaliyan ). The final 10 days are set for Sri Vaikunta EkAdasi and MokshOthsavam for Swamy NammAzhwAr . On the fourth of the 10 days, " OrunaayahamAy " paasuram is sung by the Arayar as set in TampirAnpadi and Eedu commentary for that special paasuram for ThirunArAyaNan. On the final day , the 10th decad of Thiruvaimozhi is chanted , while Swamy NammAzhwAr's ParamapadhOthsavam is enacted . This uthsavam symbolizes the attainment of Parama Padham by AzhwAr and His return to this earth (LilA VibhUthi of the Lord ) to bless the BhakthAs , who ardently pray for His anugraham. BrahMOthsaavm & Vairamudi Sevai ******************************** Iyarpa (Mudal AzhwArs 300 pasurams , Thiruviruttham, Periya ThiruvanthAdhi, ThiruvEzhukooRRirukkai, Naanmuhan ThiruvandhAthi , the two madals of Thirumangai et al) are recited one on each day for 10 days .MudalAyiram and Thiruvaimozhi is recited at the Yaaga SaalA over the 10 days . Thus two separate adhyayanams take place . Periya Thirumozhi is recited on the concluding RathOthsavam day. PavitrOthsavam *************** MudalAyiram , ThiruvAimozhi and Iyarpaa are recited over 7 days. ThAyAr Thirunakshathra Uthsavam ********************************* At ThAyAr Sannidhi , MudalAyiram (1-2 days ), Periya Thirumozhi ( 3-6 days) , ThiruvAimozhi (6-8 days) and Iyarpaa (all the 8 days) are recited .On the day after ThAyAr's birth star (Chithrai) , The Lord gives Serthi sevai with ThAyaar and the whole day , IyaRpaa is recited fully all day and the uthsavam concludes with recitation of RaamAnuja NooRRanthAdhi and Iyal SaatthumuRai. Ekaadasi days ************** The tradition of the Lord wearing Pacchai KaRpUram on His forehead and giving us His sevai in the kOlam of ThiruvenkatamudayAn is maintained in reverence to AnandALvAzhar , who did pushpa Kaimkaryam for Thirumalaiappan at the behest of AchArya RaamAnujA. AnanadALvAn arrived on a Friday , which happened to be the day of EkAdasi.AlvAn missed the Sukra Vaara Thirumanjanam at Thiruppathi during his sevai of ThirunArAyaNan and the Lord orderd the Kaimkarya ParaaLs to dress HIm as ThiruvEnkatamudayAN for His dear devotee and had NaacchiyAr Thirumozhi recited . The traditon of chanting NaacchiyAr Thirumozhi continues even today on Ekaadasis here. Other Thirunakshathrams and Uthsavams *************************************** Specific combinations of Dhivya Prabhandhams are recited on Nrusimha Jayanthi (Svathi), VarAha Jayanthi, (Revathi) Swamy NammAzhwAr Jayanthi , Thirumangai birthday , Sudarsana Jayanthi,VishvaksEna Jayanthi, birthdays of Swamy Desikan ( SravaNam),MaNavALa Maamuni, (Moolam ) ,PiLLai LOkaachAr(SravaNam ) , KurEsan, AnanadALvAr janma nakshathrams. All of them conclude with the recitation of RaamAnuja NooRRanthAdhi. RaamAnujar Thirunakshathram is celebrated here with grandeur . MudalAyiram is recited on the first three days followed by Thirumozhi ( 4th to 6th day )and ThiruvAimozhi from 7th to the 10th day ). The important role given to Dhivya Prabhandham at ThirunArAyaNapuram is a testament to Bhagavath RaamAnujA's affection for the AzhwAr AruLiccheyalkaL. The Flower , Fruit garden at the Sanskrit Academy ************************************************** Every day is uthsavam day at ThirunArAyanapuram. Lot of flowers are needed to decorate the Lord and ThAyAr . Sriman Lakshmi TatachAr Swamy and Srimathi GodhA Lakshmi TatAchAr dampathis have created a veritable paradise garden on the grounds of Sanskrit research Academy over the past two decades and present to the dhivya dampathis fragrant flowers of every kind as their kaimkaryam .Hailing from AnandAzhwAn Vamsam , it is but natural for Sriman Lakshmi TaatAchAr Swamy and his family to be devoted to Pushpa Kaimkaryam to the Lord of MelukOte. It is a great joy to walk around this garden, where no fertilizer is used and to see the abundance of nature rushing to be of service to the Lord. Sri Lakshmi TatAchAr Swamy took me around this garden to show me the enormous varieties of flowers , trees adorning this garden. This garden has benefitted from the India-wide search by Sriman TatAchAr swamy for rare plants mentioned in dhivya prabhandham , PurANams and IthihAsams .For instance , the flowers mentioned by PeriyAzhwAr in his Poocchootal Paasurams (Periya Thirumozhi 2.7) are blooming here. Until this day of the tour of the garden , adiyEn has not seen some of these flowers referred to by PeriyAzhwAr .In the order of Periya Thirumozhi , SeNpakam ,Mallikia,Paathiri, Senkazhuneer ,Punnai ,Kurukkatthi,IruvAtcchi and karumuhai flowers are used by AzhwAr to decorate Kuttik KaNNan at SrivilliputthUr . In the garden of Sanskrit academy , we have the bhAgyam of seeing not only all these flowers, but also many more ( Mullai, PaarijAtham , Sampangi , ManOranjani with its bewitching perfume, MandhArai, Sougandhikam of MahA BhAratham fame ,PunnAgam ,Bakula Pushpam associated with VakuLAbharaNar, Night Queen Flower, KanakAmbharam , Sankha Pushpam, THULASI , Panneer , KarpUra Pacchai, Maruthu flowers. The many sub-species of these individual flowers also grow here. This garden is a veritable heaven on earth invoking memories of PeriyAzhwAr , Soodikkoduttha NaacchiyAr and ThoNdaradipodi ,AnandAzhwAn known and revered for their Nandavana Kaimkaryams . In the next posting , adiyEn will sumamrize the many literary treasures housed inside the Academy and the ongoing research on Sanskrit Sri Sookthis dear to our tradition and the Ubhaya Vedantham texts with great care and devotion . AchArya RaamAnujA's stay of twelve years strengthened this Ubhaya Vedantha tradition in general and Sanskrit Scholarship in particular. In this posting , we shall highlight Sanskrit scholarship activities at MelukOte . MelukOte's eminence as a Sanskrit scholarship center ***************************************************** MeluKOte compares very well in stature with ancient seats of Sanskrit scholarship like Srirangam , Thiruppathi , Kaashi , Ujjain and KashmIr . This KshEthram is indeed a JnA~na mantapam for Sanskrit scholarship. Many great VidvAns have made invaluable contributions to protect our sampradhAyam through Critical studies. AdiyEn agrees with Sriman Krishna Kalale that it is our duty to protect these Kuladhanams by supporting the efforts of the assembly of Scholars striving to mainitain the vitality of this tradition . Any one in our group working for Major Computer Companies with business growth plans in India ( Microsoft, HP, IBM ,Siemens et al ) can help the ongoing resaerch programs of the Academy of Sanskrit Research headed by a great Scholar , Sri Lakshmi TatAchAr Swamy. We can approach these companies as employees to contribute funds, equipment to ongoing research in Computational Linguistics , Natural Language processing and number of other related areas . We can also help directly .AdiyEN plans to approach IBM Research Lab in New Delhi to link up with the Academy as a retired IBM Research Executive .Please do the needful to approach the General managers of your companies in India, who are intrested to expand their business programs . Thanks. Samplings of Great Sanskrit Scholars over the ages at MelukOte: *************************************************************** Sri AnandALvAn of Pushpa kaimkaryam fame at Thirumalai ( 1054-1154 A.D) was awarded 18 villages as sarvamAnyam by the HoysaLaa King , VishNuvardhanaa in recognition of His Sanskrit Scholarship .He hails from KiranganUr , a village near SrirangapattiNam , not too far from MelukOte. The 52 scholars appointed by AchArya RaamAnujA to the Melukote temple kaimkaryam were also outstanding scholars of Sanskrit. The First and the second Jeeyars of AhObila Matam hail from ThirunArAyanapuram and have contributed immensely to the core literature of Sri VaishNavam through their rakshaNam of the works of AchArya RaamAnujA . The second Jeeyar (Sriman NaarAyaNa Yathindhra MahA Desikan ) has blessed us with 60 siddhAntha granthams . An Illustrious family in service to Sanskrit scholarship ********************************************************* During the 17th century onwards, the WodeyAr kings of Mysore have nurtured many great Sanskrit scholars at MelukOte. Great sholarship existed and continues to exist in Sri VaishNava Aagamams at MelukOte . Many of the Sanskrit scholars of the 19th Century descend from the heritage of Panditha Rathnam KuppaNNaiyengaar Swamy ( 1840-1920) , the founder of the Sanskrit College of MelukOte. One of his important disciple is Tarkatheertha MahA VidvAn Lakshmi TaatAchArya Swamy ( 1874-1926 A.D).Latter was the principal of the MelukOte Sanskrit College for many years . PanditharAjA AlvAr Thirumalai Iyengar Swamy ( 1906-1973) was the son of MahA VidvAn Lakshmi TatAchAr Swamy and served also as the principal of the Sanskrit College like his renowned father. Professor M.A. Lakshmi TatAchAr Swamy ( b:1938) is the son of PanditharAjA AlvAr Thirumalai Iyengar and is the great scholar in NyAyA and VedAnthA. He followed the family tradition of serving as the Principal of the MelukOte Sanskrit college with distinction . He has the further distinction of being the sishyar Of the late KaarpankAdu VenkatAchAr Swamy . Today , Porfessor M.A.Lakshmi TatachAr Swamy , my respected host during the stay at MelukOte is directing the research programs of the renowned Academy of Research in Sanskrit from 1976. Critical editions of AchArya RaamAnujA's granthams , PoorvAchArya's commentaries on Upanishads and other rare sanskrit works are being released by the Academy under his direction. Professor Lakshmi TatachAr is assisted in this far reaching work by great contemproary scholars like U.Ve Kotthimangalam VaradAchAr Swamy , Aasukavi Sri Arayar Srirama Sharma. Latter serves as the principal of the sanskrit College of MelukOte and is an expert in NyAya , Ubhaya VedAnthA ,MimAmsA , VyAkaraNam , Aagamam and AlanakAra saasthram .Areyar Swami is also a member of the Managing Committee of the Academy of Sanskrit Research . Sriman U.Ve Lakshmi TatAchAr's first son is Dr. M.A.Alwar , my colleague and partner in bringing out the recently released versions of AchArya RaamAnujA for Vadakalai and TennAchArya sampradhAyins and students of Sri VaishNavam . Dr.Alwar is a faculty member at Mysore Sanskrit College . We have number of projects underway to serve the Sri vaishNavA community in general and the 20 Million non-resident (overseas )citizens of Indian origin abroad thru emerging technologies like Multimedia , Internet Web Page hosting , Portals et al. AdiyEn will keep you posted and seek your active participation in these projects during this coming year . Academy of Sanskrit Research ***************************** This academy has been established in 1976 under the distinguished leadership of Sri Lakshmi TatachAr Swamy .One of Its key goals is the comparitive study of SaasthrAs and Science . Critical examination of and analysis of selected texts such as Sri BhAshyam , Upanishads , Various systems of VedAnthA philosophy , release of unpublished works , organization of thematic conferences are the welcome activities of the Academy. Please visit the Academy during your next visit home. The Research Projects at the Academy ************************************* KRIYA PROJECT ************* Artificial Intellegence project(Kriya) to aid some areas of stymied research in natural languages processing is making good progress. It so happens that Sanskrit linguists , grammarians and philosophers have successfully addressed number of baffling issues in natural language processing. Insights gained from such studies should be of help in advancing AI research abroad .In addition to that goal in the Kriya project, the work done here would help establish links to multi-Indian scripts through the foundation of Sanskrit lingustics. Computational Lingusitics experts from our group are requested to join in these peojects at MelukOte. Microsoft word processing , syntax checks , grammar checks in sentences clearly stand to gain from the insights obtained from the Research at Academy . The SabdhabOdhA , Semushi and Praj~na software and other modules developed here address other important research issues related to: * parsing valid sentences and identifying a factually incorrect sentence (BodhA ) * The semushi analyser identifies the ending (anta) , the gender (linga) and base (pratipadika), the case (vibhakti) and number (vacana ) of any given noun. * Praj~nA software module consists of Verb generator and analyser. * ChEtana module consists of participle generator and analyser. * PaaNini is a rule-based software to understand the Sandhis as established by the great grammarian, PaaNini . * Janani module is a powerful synonom retreiver that uses a large data base of AmarakOsa, Nirukta and PaaNiNi's ashtAdyAyi . * MedhA is a multilingual electronic dictionary covering Sanskrit, Hindi, Kannada, Telegu , MalayALam and English.Any one of the above seven languages can be chosen as a source language and the other six become the target languages. * Bharati is another rule-based software giving the metric analysis of any stanza with the number of laghus and Gurus and their triplets (gaNAs), chandas, VrutthA and the definition (lakshana) for the particular metre. As computer Scientists , many members of the net would like to learn more about these projects of the Academy and are requsted to get in touch with Dr.Lakshmi TatachAr and help him speed up the progress of these valuable avenues of research . Acaedmic Programs , Library, Museum and Garden *********************************************** adiyEn has touched upon the flora (pious plants)of the unique garden at the Academy earlier. The library has 23,000 books on Indian and Western philosophy , VedAnthA, Indology, ancient sciences et al. Audio and video casettes containing lectures by scholars are also available along with precious/rare palm leaf manuscripts. The Museum contains number of artifacts like ancient coins, tools and idols from various sites in and around the Academy. A wonderful and Modern guest house with excellent facilites run by solar power is a great source of comfort for vistors from abroad and different parts of India. Modern computers from desktops to laptops are heavily used here along with offset printing facilities. In short , the academy is a Scholar's paradise thriving under the protective Thiruvadi Nizhal of ThirunArAyaNan in this ancient religious center. That epilogue will sum up the highlights of this special dhivya desa Yaathrai and the Kaimkaryam sankalpams for the rest of the year 2000 . adiyEn will describe in this posting a festival that is unique to ThirunArAyaNan , the ASHTAKSHARA SVARUPAN . The heart of this festival is the day long travel of the Lord's SatAri (Swamy NammAzhwAr) at the behest of the Lord ThirunArAyaNan to His EIGHT pushkaraNis (tanks) at MelukOte for avabrutha snAnam . This festival takes place in the holy month of Kaarthigai . The immersion of the Ashtakshara Moorthy's SatAri in the sacred waters of the eight tanks has a lot of auspicious resonances , when one contemplates on the significance of this Ashta TheerthOthsavam . Avabrutha snAnam is done always at the conclusion of a Yaagam or MahOthsavam . After completing the Yaagam of Bhara SamarpaNam , which is the offering of the Lord's property ( the athman ) back to Him as the Havis (SamarpaNam ) and seeking His sole protection with MahA VisvAsam , this TheerthOthsavam has a special meaning for adiyEn after being blessed with this ParamAnugraham by asmath AchArya Saarvabhouman and MalOlan . You might recall that AdiyEn's journey had two central goals : (1)Bhara SamarpaNam at the sacred feet of asmath AachAryan, HH Srimath Azhagiyasingar and to qualify to become His Thiruvadi and (2) SamarpaNam of MudaliyANDAn (Udayavar's "SatAri" )at AchArya RaamAnujA's sannidhi at Thiru- NaarAyaNapuram . The above two samarpaNams came together , when adiyEn reflected on the significance of Ashta Theertha Uthsavam (avabrutha SnAnam )and the SatAri's travel to bless the people accompanying it during the PradhakshiNam around ThirunArAyaNan's dhivya RaajadhAni . BTW , the Postings on PaadhukhA Sahasram of Swamy Desikan is almost at the 180th slOkam level, which is one sixth of this mahA Kaavyam to celebrate the glory of the Lord's Paadhukai(SatAri). These postings are accessible at http://homepage.paduka.com/ and are the celebrations of the glories of the Lord's satAri. The Eight sacred PushkaraNis of ThirunArAyaNapuram **************************************************** The SuprabhAtha slOkam of ThirunArAyanan makes reference to these eight specific PushkaraNis as : Veda , Dharba , Abja ( Padma) , Yaadhava , PalAsa , ParAsara, NaarAyaNa , and Achuyutha PaadhAkhya ( Vaikunta GangA ot Tottilamadu). Please note that adiyEn will be making references to ten pushkaraNis in the posting , although the ceremonial dip takes place at eight pushkaraNis. Kaarthigai Sukla Paksha Chathurdhasi Day ****************************************** Up in the hill town of MelukOte , Kaarthigai is a cool month.THe VaikAnasa/PaancharAthra DhIpam festival , the Thirunakshathram festivals for Thirumangai and ThiruppANar are on the horizon. On this day, the ashta TheethOthsavam takes place. (1)KalyANi Saras Theerthavaari ******************************* Early in the morning , Lord Selva NaarAyaNan adorned with the fine jewelery presented by the previous MaharAjAs of Mysore arrives with His ubhaya NaacchiyArs at the eastern gopuram entrance of His temple. Lord's SatAri accompanies the dhivya dampathis and this rich procession arrives at the first stop, the sacred KalyANi Theertham , the main pushkaraNi of MelukOte . There at the Mantapam on the North East corner , the SatAri leaves the Lord's feet with honors ( Two umbrellas ) in the hands of the Archakar and takes a dip in the waters of the PushkaraNi to the accompaniment of Veda manthrams. At the end of the SatAri's avabrutha snAnam , all the assembled people immerse themselves in the water sanctified by Swamy NammAzhwAr. The Lord now bids good bye to His dear AzhwAr and returns to the temple to wait for Him at the end of the journey to the reamining seven theerthams . In most of the dhivya dEsams, Sudarsanam of the Lord takes a dip in the pushkaraNi or river during theerthavAris. (2) Veda PushkaraNi SnAnam **************************** After traveling southward to the sacred spot , where Lord DattAthrEya revealed the sArArthams of the four VedAs .There is a stone here on the banks of Veda PushkaraNI (paridhAna SilA) , where those entering sanyAsAsramam accept the ochre robes. AchArya raamAnujA is said to have changed His white vasthram here into the Ochre robe after arriving at ThirunArAyaNapuram from his journey from ChOLa dEsam. A ceremonial dip in the waters of Veda PushakaraNi is completed here by the Satari and the people accompanying it. (3) DhanushkOti theertham : ***************************** This theertham s behind the Sanskrit Academy on a hill with breathtaking view . The satAri makes a ceremonial stop at the Academy premises to bless the ongoing effoerts of the academy to advance the Ubhaya avedAntha sampradhAyam . Here at DhanushkOti theerttham , Lord RaamachandrA is said to have struck a rock with His arrow to produce water for quenching the thirst of SitA pirAtti. One is reminded of AchArya RaamAnujA's theertha kaimkaryam to the dhivya dampathis of Kaanchi here ( Saalaik KiNaRu Theertha samarpaNam). (4) Yadhava Theertha ********************* Here, Lord KrishNA ad BalarAmA , who are associated with the prathishtai of ThirunArAyaNan are said to have their snAnam and anushtAnam . A river flows by the side of this sacred theertham. (5) Dharba Theertham : ********************** Sages DattAtrEyaa and SaandiliyA are said to have collected thUppul (Sacred DharbhA grass ) for their aunshtAnams. This is also considered as the site , where sage SaandilyA released to the world the PaancharAthra Aagamas for BhagavAn's worship . (6) PalAsa Theertha SnAnam **************************** The satAri travelling on a pallaaku travels another half an hour on the mountain side to reach the PalAsa theertham , where PalAsa trees are in abundance. Here , the legend is that the sons of Sage VasishtA were freed from the ill effects of the curse of Sage VisvAmithrA . (7) Padma (abja ) theertham **************************** There are lots of lotuses in this tank and Sage sanathkumAra is said to have collected lotuses form this tank to worship the Lord . (8) ParAsara Theertham *********************** Dusk is setting in as the procesison reaches ParAsara theertham , which is in a northerly direction to KalyANi pushkaraNi. Here, Sage ParAsarA is said to have taught MaitrEya , VishNupurANam. (9) NaarAyaNa Theertham ************************ Lord NaarAyaNA is siad to have appeared here to grant Moksham to a devotee by the name of VishNuchittA. (10) Vaikuntha Gangaa ********************** The sacred water originating from the abhishEkam of Lord BrahmA of BhagavAn Thrivikraman 's rising feet during His measurement of the Worlds is said to flow here as Vaikunta GangA .At one place , this pushkaraNi looks like a cradle and hence it is also known as Thottilamadu. By the side , VirajA river flows. MokshAnnugraham and Ishta Kaama Siddhi ( children to the childless ) are the goal of those , who follow the SatAri and take the sacred snAnms all day long. Taittiriya AaraNyakam ********************** Through out this theerthAdanam , Taittiriya AaraNyakam is recited by the Vedic scholars. The echo of the veda manthrams on these hills bless those participating in this annual festival. This uthsavam might have also taken place in the times of AchArya RaamAnujA's stay.If one visualizes the procession of the SatAri followed by AchArya RaamAnujA , His 52 temple officials , King Vishnuvardhana and other disciples of the AchAryan, one's mind is filled with exquisite aanandham. adiyEn has listed TEN theerthams. The avabrutha snAnam takes place only at eight theerthams.adiyEn will let you find out the exact eight during one of your visits to ThirunArAyaNapuram with the SatAri . After sunset , the SatAri of the Lord reaches His sannidhAnam and is greeted with affection by the Lord. (4) One or More Multimedia CD ROMs on the Lifes of AzhwArs: ************************************************************ Discussions with scholars in India indicated the need to come up with a sequel to the recently released CD ROM on the Life and works of AchArya RaamAnujA , which has now been released by the International RaamAnujA Society in the Vadakalai and TenAcchArya SampradhAya Versions. This new initiative will focus on " THE LIFE AND WORKS OF THE TWELVE AZHWAARS" , Who performed MangaLAsAsanam to the dhivya Dampathis at the 108 Dhivya Desams .This is a major effort in the spirit of serving the Ubhaya VedAntha tradition of ours. Life histories of the AzhwArs, videos and audio clips of the life and works of AzhwArs and the dhivya desams will be the subject matter . We will need precious content from many of you to augment the resources that we already have . Every one , who wishes to participate in this kaimkaryam will receive a copy of the CD ROM(s) , when the project is completed . The estimated time for completion is 3 to 6 months . The extensive content may require two CD ROMs . The estimated expenses are $5K /CD ROM . Contributions of $100 each from 100 BhaagavathAs or whatever they wish to offer would help us complete this project . We will condense the content in to one CD ROM , if the target of 10K$ is too large to realize. We will also approach Thiruppathi DevasrthAnam for help . In that case , we would need only $100 each from 50 BhakthAs . The conceptualization and the work on the story book has already been started in co-operation with Dr.M.A.Alwaar , who was the partner in the AchArya RaamAnujA project. Please let me know of your interests to reach out to the younger generation through this project to provide educational material on the incomparable Bhakthi anubhavam of our AzhwArs and their performance of SaraNAgathi at the lotus feet of the Dhivya Dampathis. (5) Changes in SaraNAgathi Journal : ************************************ Discussions with AchAryAls and Scholars gave us positive feedbacks on the SaraNAgathi Electronic Journal started on a PurattAsi SravaNam day (Swami Desikan's birthday). Suggestions have been made to make some needed changes to increase the frequency of its publication and broadening of its content . AdiyEn will keep you posted on the changes that will be made soon .The original announcement on the plans for the publication of this journal, the team of volunteers are summarized in Bhakthi archives (Oct 12 ,1997) posting of mine. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS *********************** In summary , thanks to you ALL for your feedbacks on the postings . The two kaimakryams that would need your utmost help and support now( are : (1) the ThridhaNda Kaimakryam ($500 estimate) for our YathirAjAr for His (Thaam Uhantha) ThirumEni at Sri PerumbhUdhUr and (2) The creation of the CD ROM(S) on the Life and Prabhandhams of the 12 AzhwArs with a lot of content on the 108 Dhivya Desams , where they performed MangaLAsAsanams ($5-10K$ estimate). His family has been deeply involved with Kaimakryam for the Lord at His Singapore Temple for many years . Even the land on which the temple stands was acquired by his relatives. Sri Haresh is the creator of the beautiful home pages for Lord Krishna , Swamy Desikan and Thirupathi VenkatAchalapathy .It has been my pleasure to work with him on some of these projects . The saanidhyam of the Lord at SrinivAsa temple is unmistakable .This is largely due to the strict code of worship prescribed by the AagamAs . I had the good fortune of this PerumAL's sevai during my recent visit to Singapore . Please include a visit to this temple during your future visits to Singapore , which is fortunate to have devout BhakthAs of our SampradhAyam . It is however performed better at Home with a PurOhithar and family . The Udaka Shanthi , Veda PaarAyaNam are important features of this function. The pouring of consecrated water from the Udaka ShAnthi Kumbham is the highlight of this celebration for longer and healthy life . Some people reenact their marriage in front of their children and grand children to bring a social aspect to this function . The temples in this country perform the 60th anniversary celebration and conduct homams for general well being . It is my experience that many times , we do not get as much feedback as one would like to get , when engaging in a serious effort such as yours .Please continue to enlighten us on both the Paancha RaathrA and the VaikAnasa Aagamams and particularly the points of difference . The Melukote Sanskrit Academy has done pioneering work in the study of Aagamaas and you may wish to get in touch with Sri Lakshmi TatachAr , the Director of Sanskrit academy . In a related matter , the Academy is putting together a critical study of BhAshyams for Upanishads follwing the Sri SampradhAyam ( Based on Sri RangarAmAnuja Muni's Sanskrit text ) .These are distinct and clearly defined projects that members would like to support and benefit from . Regarding the Aagamaas , the top study centers are at Melukote and Kaanchi .Even Bhattars from Kaanchi come to study PaancharAthra Aagamam at Melukote . This temple is famous for Lord ShivA for protecting the Young MarkandEyA from akaala mruthyu according to sthala PurANam .This temple is famous as a site for performing Mruthunjaya Home , when there is concern for one's life or for prolonging of one's life (to conquer Mruthyu). The consort of the Lord ShivA here is AbhirAmi Devi , who is dear to Sakthi worshippers . AbhirAmi Bhattar composed AbhirAmi AnthAdhi here. Strict Sri VaishNavAs will not elect to perform their Shasti Abdha Poorthi at ThirukkadavUr. Please do not misunderstand me on this observation . I am citing the traditional practises of Sri VaishNavAs . A KshEthram linked tightly with Sage MarkaNDEyA, Oppiliappan Koil , is a popular place for many prArthanAs including Shasti abdha poorthi. Bhumi Devi incarnated here as the foster daughter of Sage MarkaNDEyA at this KshEthrma according to sthala PurANam . Other temple associated with Sage MaarkaNDEyA is NacchiyAr Koil. Tradionalists celebrate this 60th birthday with Veda PaarAyaNam ,Srimath RaamayaNa PaarAyaNam at their houses and conclude the celebrations with Udaka Saanthi and ceremonial pouring of the consecrated water on their heads for long life and continued service to the dhivya Dampathis. That sacred water is sprinkled by the observer on their children realtives and friends after their abhishEkam . SathAbhishEkam is the name for the celebration of the completion of the 80 years .Satham normally means 100 . SathAbhishEkam stands for the completion of 80 years, when one is supposed to have seen 1,000 PourNamis (Full Moons ) .An year has an average of 12.5 moons and 80 times 12.5 gives us the number of 1,000 . For my father's sathAbhishEkam , I returned to my village ( Oppiliappan Koil ); four Vedams were recited in our house for four to five days, Srimath RaamAyaNam was read in its entirety , maryAdhais (Maalai ) were received from the temples, ManthrAkshathai was received from Ahobila matam Jeeyar (AchAryan ) and the ceremonies concluded with MahA abhishEkam in the consecrated water . A grand tadhiyArAdhanam was performed at the conclusion of the celebration. Annual Thirumanjanam for ThiruviNnagarappan was established on that day as a vow to be carried out by future generations on the day after the Lord's ThirukkalyANam in Iypaasi . The Veda PrAyam is 100 and these days unlike Among VaishNavite AchAryAs of India , the great ones like Naatha Muni, AlavandhAr , RaamAnujA , KurEsar, Swamy Desikan , PiLlai Lokaachaar lived well past the Vedic sanctioned age of one hundred due to their AchAram and anushtAnam . In our MaadhyAhnika SandhyA vandhanam , we pray for this Veda prAyam of One hundred years daily . Contributions can be made in Indian Rupees as well . The CD ROM kaimkaryam is an educational outreach program to bring the special Bhakthi-laden anubhavam of AzhwArs , which is a distillation of the essence of SaasthrAs , Smruthis and Sruthis. The importance of preservation and dissemination of the enduring doctrines of our noble and ancient sampradhAyam thru reprinting of the books of great scholars , which are out of print and the release of educational materials using emerging technogies ( Multimedia, Internet et al) can not be overemphasized. Both the efforts serve different audiences or audiences at different levels , interested in the well being of the same Sri SampradhAyam ; these twin efforts are indeed complimentary and synergestic . The SamarpaNam of AabharaNams to the Divine couple is another form of Kaimkaryam and should be accepted as such . AdiyEn is following only the path shown by revered AchAryALs . As one experiences the aanandham of BhakthAs on days , when ThiruviNNagarappan gives His sevai adorning the RathnAngi or special AabharaNams like Mutthangi , one feels the Vaibhavam of Archai and brings us all closer to Him . Those , who have taken part in the adhyayana uthsavams at Sri RanganathA's temple at Pomona , NY and at the temple for Sri Balaji at Chicago know the power of the recitation of these sacred collects . One of the three reasons for initiating this project is to share the exquisite anubhavam of the twelve great AzhwArs with fellow-BhakthAs , whose Mother tongue may not be Tamil ;even for those, whose Mother tongue is Tamil , it is not easy to understand the nuances of the experiences of the AzhwArs during their spiritual journeys except with the help of elaborate commentaries by poorvAchAryAs . The other two goals of the project are : (1)to reach out to the younger generation about the glories of the treasures left behnd for us as family wealth by the twelve AzhwArs and (2) to have a virtual journey of the 108 dhivya desams with appropriate graphics and video clips . Please take part in this educational outreach kaimkaryam that uses the new media technologies to spread the message of our Ubhaya VedAntha SampradhAyam. The actual date for Sri Rama Navami is April 12 this year , the day of the Tamil New Year . The Navami thithi falls this year on April 12. The date of April 24 coincides with the final day of Sri Rama Navami Uthsavam at Oppiliappan Koil , when Sri Rama PattAbhishEkam is celebrated on a grand scale .That is why adiyEn had that date of April 24 in my mind and the dhyAna slOkam of PattabhirAman to bless these two kaimkaryams: VaidEhI sahitham suradhrumatalE haimE mahAmaNDapE madhyE PushpakAsanE MaNimayE VeerAsanE susthitham agrE vaachayathi prabhanjanasuthE tattvam munibhya: param vyAkhAyantham BharathAdhibhi: parivrutham RAAMAM bhajE shyAMaLam During the previous Sri Rama Navami occasions , adiyEn had the bhAgyam to post a series of articles on the Vaibhavam of Sri RamachandrA : (1) Sri Raghuveera Gadhyam of Swamy Desikan (2) Sri RaamAshta Krithis of Sri Dikshithar (3) Pancha Raama KshEthrams among the 108 dhivya desams sung by AzhwArs in the form of four audio tapes. AdiyEn got recently elected to serve as one of the Editors of the Carnatic Music Association of North America. It is in this context adiyEn is thinking about posting a series of articles for this Raama Navami uthsavam on the anubhavam of a great Raama BhakthA , Saint ThyagarAja , who celebrated with great joy , the uthsavam for His dear Lord at ThiruvaiyARu . As he went around the streets of this town on his daily unchivrutthi , his adhyantha Raama Bhakthi poured out in the form of exquisite dhivya Naama kruthis. At the end of the unchivrutthi for the day , he sat down and performed AarAdhanam for his dear Lord Raamabhadran with shOdasOpachArams . The intensity of his daily aarAdhanam reached its peak during the Sri Rama Navami celebrations . The uthsava sampradhAya Krithis sung during these occasions are the distillation of the exquisite Bhakthi of Saint ThyagarAjA had for his Sarvasvam , Sri SitA LakshmaNa Hanumath SamEtha Sri Raamachandra Parabrahmam . These sticks are thin Bamboo saplings tied together with sacred thread and rituals to protect the vows taken by a VaishNava sanyAsi as he enters the sanyAsa aasramam. He receives the ochre robe, PrEksha manthram ( manthram to initate him into th eorder of SanyAsis from his AchAryan ) . The three sticks stand symbolically for the vows to adhere strictly to SanyAsa Dahrmam (Code of Conduct) .There is a flag of white hue on top of that sticks tied together. That symbolizes purity and victory among other things. The 11th slOkam of YathirAja sapthadhi of Swamy Desikan covers the Radiant beauty of AchArya RaamAnujA as the Emperor of Monks with his ThridhaNDam , Sacred thread, Sikhai and sacred marks (puNDram ) of the Lord on his body . AchArya RaamAnujA took sanyasam at Kaanchi in front of Lord VaradarAjA .A sanyAsi has to have the ThridhaNdam in his hands or nearby always. The ThridhaNdam on the hands of AchArya RaamAnujA symbolizes further that he is Yathi RaajA or the emperor of SanyAsis . That is the significance. In non-VaishNavite Sanyasa dharmam, One instead of three bamboo sticks is held on the hand of the ascetic ; further , they do not wear the sacred thread and they shave of their heads instead of keeping the tuft of hair (sikai ). EmbAr in his salutation to his Achaaryan, Sri RaamAnujA , admires the shining thridhandam in his hands. ThridhaNdam also stands for the three kinds of DhaNDanais (punishments) for transgressing Saasthra injunctions. The greatness of the thridhaNdam symbolizing AchArya RaamAnujA as the yathi Raajan can be enjoyed from the sacred work (Sri Sookthi) of his sishyar revered as Sri RaamAnuja NoorathAdhi. I request other BhakthAs to add more information on the significance of ThridhaNdam in the context of the ThridhaNdam replacement /samarpaNam project and the AzhwAr CD ROM project .Thnaks for all of your support for these two dreams to come true. He was a garbha-BhaagavathA and is considered as the amsam of Sage VaalmikI , who blessed us with the magnificent IthihAsam , Srimath RaamAyaNam .No wonder that Saint ThyagaraajA became a Raama chaithanyA and performed Aaraadhanam with dhivya Naama kusumams for Sri Raamachandran with such ardour . The Exemplary Life led by Saint ThyagarAjA ******************************************* He led a simple life and had parama vairAgyam . He spurned wealth and asked his mind " Nidhi chAla sukamA? I shall certainly not approach rich men and beg them for wealth through krithis praising them .I shall not go near places frequented by greedy men , who are possessed by the devils of desire and attachment to material things ". With parama vairAghyam , Saint ThyagarAjA stayed away from royal courts and felt uncomfortable about the status of VidvAns , who eked a livelihood from musical services to the wealthy ones. He reminds us in this context of Swamy Desikan's memorable decalaration in his VairAghya Panchakam: " vayam vaachA mahIsvarAn thruNamapi na YaachAmahE " (meaning): We shall never ever beg even for a blade of grass from the kings (wealthy ones)". Swamy Desikan's words are: " Dhananjaya Vivardhanam dhanam udhUDa Govardhanam susaadhanam aBhAdhanam sumanasAm samArAdhanam " Like Swamy Desikan , Saint ThyagarAjA conducted unchivrutthi every day and lived on the alms that the citizens of ThiruvaayARu gave him. He presented it to Sri RaamachandrA , performed AarAdhanam for Him and partook of the naivEdhyam and spent his day and night singing about the glories of his Raama NaarAyaNan . The origin of the Dhivya NaamA Krithis *************************************** During his unchivrutthi around the streets of this river town, the Saint used to sing with ThamburA in one hand and chapLa kattais on the other hand the dhivya naamAs of his AarAdhana moorthy , Sri Raamachandran . Out poured moving krithis that were composed on the spot with great Bhakthi . These krithis are known as dhivya naama krithis and had many small charaNams and have great bhakthi bhAvam . The Raagams used in the Dhivya Naama krithis ********************************************** Rakthi Raagams , Ghana Raagams,upAnga-BhAshAnga raagams , sampUrNa, varja-vakra and chAyalaka raagams took their turns to be adorned in his free-flowing Saahithyams and to take their immortal place as dhivya- Naama Krithis emanating from the bard. The musical genius of Saint ThyagarAjA blending perfectly with his great Bhakthi gave us a body of dhivya naama krithis that have very few parallels in Bhakthi literature . Typical raagaas used by the Saint in composiiton of these dhivya naam krithis are: Aananda Bhairavi, Kaapi, BhouLi, SaavEri, Bhairavi, AsAvEri, Thodi, MadhyamAvathi , PunnagavarAli , GowLipanthu and NaadhanAmakriya, ReethigowLai and some times even MukhAri and rare raagams like KalakaNTi. Typical Features of a Dhivya Naama Krithi ****************************************** These dhivya Naama krithis have many , short charaNams that permitted singing with manOdharam , while moving from house to house receiving bikshai. Usually , these krithis do not have any anupallavi. The message will be like an upadesam . An Example of a Dhivya Naama krithi in GhouLipanthu raagam *********************************************************** Pallavi: Raama Raama KrishNa yanarE raathiri- pahalumaa Sitha ( Oh People You will all do well by chanting the holy names of my SitA Raaman and KrishNaa day and night) CharaNam 1: ithara maarga soukyamulaku athani hrudhayamE Saakshiyu (Raama Raama--) ( Your heart will be the witness (ssakshi) to the fact that there are no other ways to get happiness and deliverance . " Naanya: panthA ayanAya vidhyathE " is the message of Purusha Sooktham ). CharaNam 2: kAnipanulu kOri kOri karaguchuNDu maanavulu ( Raama Raama) CharaNam 3: kuthisathapu maaDalaku uddhuga pOrElEDu janalu (Raama Raama) CharaNam 4: sarvasAsthramulanu jdhiva aasa dhaasulayinavAru (Raama Raama) CharaNam 5: yedhuDi paccha jUDalEka hithavu mADalADu Janulu (Raama Raama) CharaNam 6: challani vaakulu Baliki svAntha manalamainavAru (Raama Raama) CharaNam 7: palukanErcchi yaDukaBhOthE teliviki haaniyainavAru (Raama Raama) CharaNam 8: JaathiheenulainavAru JaaNalainaaradhE Saakshi(Raama Raama) CharaNam 9: paamu pandhi Gaja pisAcha paathakAgrEsarulE Saakshi ( Raama Raama) CharaNam 10:ThyagarAju dhelusukOnna taaraka mihapara sAdhakamu( Raama Raama) The beauty of the architecture of the dhivya Naama Krithi and the symmetry of the individual CharaNams set in Aathi Taalam is exquisite. There is not an extra word in each of the CharaNa Vaakhyams. The refrain is a sweet lilting "Raama Raama KrishNa yanarE ".The meanings and the references are deep . General Meaning of charaNams 2-10 : Oh people , You who chase after desires and activities forbidden by ShAsthrAs and revel in them ! You will do well by cbanting the Lord's name day and night ! Oh People , Who wallow profoundly in demeaning talks and who have become helpless slaves to Your desires , even if you have gone thru all shAsthrAs! You will have salvation by reciting the Lord's names day and night. Oh People! who are filled with asooyai (jealousy) because your neighbor is prosperous and yet are pretending to mean well by saying kind words in front of them ! You can get relief from all these miseries, if you chant the names of my SithA Raaman and KrishNan . Oh people, who talk sweetly , while having poison in your hearts ! You will overcome these harmful dispositons , if you chant my Lord's names . Oh People, who have been formally educated to use your speech effectively ! When the time comes to demonstrate your intelligence , you are unable to manage your speech and give the right ansewers . The unassailable fact that low birth is no hindrance to salvation by chanting the Lord's names has been proven by many. They are the witnesses to the redemptive power of the Lord's names and naama sankIrthanam , which leads up to total self-surrender at the lotus feet of our dhivya Dampathis. Prominent among this assembly of heinous sinners are the serpent (Ajakaran), Pig ( MookAsuran), Elephant (MatthakAsuran),the demon /PisAsu( DhunthumAran). Their sins melted away ,when they chanted Hari's names. This path of redemption has been learnt by ThyagarAjA as the means to achieve moksham .Raama Naamam is the Taaraka manthram known to Thyagarajan as Iha Para Saadhanam . You will do well by reciting the Lord's many names. We will cover the introduction to the Uthsava SampradhAya krithis in the next posting and come back to selected examples of dhivya naama and uthsava sampradhAya Krithis in subsequent postings. I mentioned that some of these krithis were composed by Saint ThyAgarAjA as he went around the main streets of ThiruvayyARu for his daily Unchivrutthi . In Dakshina Desam , there is also another tradition associated with the Dhivya Naama or Devaru Naama krithis. They form the core of the Bhajana SampradhAyam . It has been pointed out by Sri Aravind Krishnan in a private note to me that Dhivya Naama krithi singing is nothing but the enactment of the rAsa LeelA by the assembled BhaagavathAs ( Srimath Bhagavatham : Canto X.33). The Bhajanai matams of DakshiNa desam housed great sanyAsis and BhAgavathAs and were centers that kept the lamp of Bhakthi shining as NanthA ViLakku ( eternal lamp in Bhagavath SannidhAnam ). These singing of Dhivya Naamams were interspersed with the singing of Uthsava SampradhAya Krithis . Thus , there is a convention to classify a specific krithi as either belonging to the Dhivya Naama group or to the Uthsava SampradhAyam groups. Some are classified as belonging to both the groups . Thus the shOdasOpachaarams seems to get seamlessly woven into Bhagavath anubhavam through the dhivya naamA krithi sung by the assembled BhaagavathAs .These shOdasOpachArams are highlighted in the AarAdhanam section of the recently released CD ROM on the Life and works of AchArya RaamAnujA . The tradition of Dhivya Naama Singing at Bhajanai Matams ********************************************************* In Bhagavaan's sannidhi , the chief Bhaagavathar will bring the KutthiviLakku from the altar and place it at the center of the hall with enough room for the BhaagavathAs to move around it in a pradhakshiNam fashion. BhAgavathAs consider themselves as Gopis and relate to the sacred lamp at the center as SarvAbharaNa BhUshitha , JyOthirmaya Baala KrishNan playing on His flute on the banks of YamunA river and performing RaasaleelA with them . The songs are sung as the BhagavathAs come around the sacred dheepam . These songs are the dhivya- NaamA krithis , which have many charanams ranging on the average from 4 to 8 charaNams. Some have even 12 charaNams to prolong the enjoyment of the Bhagaavth anubhavam during the sathsangam . The tradition is for one bhaagavathar to sing one CharaNam and the next Bhaagavathar to sing the next charaNam and the pallavi will be sung in chorus fashion by all assembled. This will all be done , while BhagavathAs stand around the sacred dheepam representing the Lord at the center. The BhagavathAs will then sit down and sing slOkams from the gOpikA/Yugala) gItham chapter of Srimath BhAgavavtham ( Canto X.35).These are the songs sung by Gopis during the day time in rememberance of their Lord . The 24th and the 25th slOkams of the YugaLa githam provide an example of the intense adoration of Lord KrishNA by the gOpis : " with a bright look , sporting a floral wreath and gladdening His friends , here comes KrishNaa , the leader of the Yadhu clan , like a moon assuaging the day long heat of seperation of the inhabitants of VrajA -His eyes rolling in a slightintoxication of bliss , His face flushed like a BadarA fruit , His cheeks shining with the lustre of golden ear-rings , and His gait resembling that of a lordly elephant ( --mudhitha vakthra upayAthi dhurantham mOchayan vrajagavAm dhina thApam)". After the singing of the GopikA Geetham , the BhAgavathAs will continue with the recital of " aN^gaNAm aN^gaNAm antarE Maadhavam " slOkam and the circling around the Dheepam as the enactment of Raasa leelA will take place. The symbolic mesage of Raasa leelA is summarized by Sri NaarAyana Bhattadhiri this way: virahEshvangAramaya: srungAramayasccha sangamEhi thvam nitharAmAngAramayastathra puna: sangamEpi chithramidham -- Sri NaarayaNeeyam : X. 66.9 (meaning ): Oh KrishNA ! for the gOpis , You were like unbearbale heat during the seperations from You (VislEsham ) and in union (samslEsham )with them were like the essence of the bliss of srungAram . Now during Your performance of raasa leelA , Thou art anga aramayan ( bliss of KrishNAnubhavam ). What a mystery your deeds are ? . After the raasa leelA enactment , the sacred lamp is carried back by the eldest bhAgavathA to the aasthAnam (altar of the Lord) and the Lord is lulled to sleep with the performance of dhOlOthsavam. SAINT THYAGARAAJAA IMAGINED THIS LAMP TO REPRESENT RAAMAA , HIS ISHTA DHAIVAM AND UPAASANAA MOORTHY AND COMPOSED ALL HIS DHIVYA NAAMAAS ON RAAMACHANDRAN. SADHGURU THYAAGARAAJA SWAMIGAL PERFORMED DAILY DHIVYA NAAMA KRITHI SINGING AND DHOLOTHSAVAM. Even today , mostly the krithis of Saint ThyagarAjA are used during dhOlOthsavam (the Laali songs : uyyALa lUgavayyA in NeelAmbhari , lAli yUgave in NeelAmbhari , KshIra Saagara vihAra in Ananadha Bhairavi , lAli lAli yani uchatarA in Hari KaambhOji and lAli vana mAli in raagam , kEdAra gowLai ). The many upachAra krithis are also sung at this time as the Lord and His divine consort are offered milk, bhakshaNams , TaambhUlam and the BhaagavathAs pray for the blessings of SithA Raaman .AparAdha KshAmaNam for any unintended flaws in AarAdhanam are requested ; gadhya-padhya vachanams are recited after singing the "pUla pAmbu paini " in raagam Aahiri .ShObhAnam krithi ( shObAne ) is sung next. The Lord now rests in His Hamsa dhULikA manjam (bed) and He is lulled to sleep to the naadham of "jO jO RaamA " in raagam, rIthi GowLai. The curtain is drawn down and the slOkAs in neelAmbhuri are sung to enhance His comfort : dhvArakA nagara varE saaravindhu davaLa shaudE kalita varaahadUpE karpUra dhIpayutE mR^iga nAbhi parimaLatE mR^iduLOpadAna yutE MAdhavi kusuma talpE mAdava sEshva sukam ... SanakAdhi muni gEya sAkEta pura vAsa JanakasudhA hR^innilaya Sri RaamA sEshava sukam .. Saint ThyagarAja SwamigaL will now alert the dhvAra paalakAs (gate keepers) that their Lord is enjoying His Yoga nidhrA and ask them to avoid any disturbance to their Lord"s sleep: kaavEri thIrE kamanIya gEhE navatuLasI VanamAli navarasa yutha dEvanAri chAmara malayAnilavara sevitE Sri Raamachandra: SeethA samEtha chete Sundara sEsha sayanE Sri Raama Raama RaamEthi geetham praakaara rakshaNam kurvanthu ahO pUrvadvArashta: Jaya VijayAdhi dhvAra paalakA: sarve parama bhagavOtthamA: Sri Raamachandra SeethA sametha sannayodhyAnam rathna maNtapE varyaN^kE hamsadhULikA talpamaN^jE kusuma sayanE yOga nidhrAm anubhavathi tathra bhavantha: sAvadhAnatayaa poorva prAkAra rakshaNam kurvanthu BHADRAM . BHADROSMI . After alerting the gate keepers, Sadhguru Swami will sing the last MangaLam for the day spent in Sri RaamAraadhanam in a mangala raagam like GhantA , Aahiri or NaadanAmakriyA to differnetiate them from other raagams used during the day for MangaLams like Sri raagam or MadhyamAvathi. Sadhguru SwamigaL will now rest for the night and would be blessed with divine conversations with the Lord during his sleep .He will wake up at Brahma muhUrtham for another day of worship of his dear Lord . Sri Raamchandra ParabrahmaNE Nama: Daasan , Oppiliappan Koil VaradaachAri Sadagopan P.S: I am indebted to Sri Aravind KrishNan , one of the fellow editors of the SangItham Journal of the Carnatic Music association of North America for valuable exchange of information on the DakshiNa Bhajana sampradhAyam. PPS: One must remember the times of birth of these Dhivya Naama krithis of Saint ThyagarAjA. It was the time of sangItha medhais (genius) like ThOdi SeethAraamaiah , SankarAbharaNam Narasayaa et al, who used their manOdharmam to elaborate extensively the svarUpams of these Raagams thru raagam , thAnam and Pallavi. These raagAs were their family jewels. At this time, there were also many mahAns who celebrated the Lord thru Bhakthi-laden dhivya NaamAs and slOkams to stay away from any ahankAra-MamakArams thru musical displays. The common folk joined in these bhajanais and grew their own Bhakthi to the Lord.Bhakthi here took the first place and SangItham took the secondary place at Bhajani matams . It is at this time , Saint ThyagarAja arrived on the scene and thru his Raama Bhakthi mahimai united the bhAva thryams ( SangItha Bhaavam, Saahithya Bhaavam and Bhakthi Bhaavam) and melted the hearts of paNdithAs and paamarAs thru the hundreds of krithis that he composed as nadha naivEdhyam to Lord RaamachandrA.He united thus the sangItha siddhAntham and the Bhakthi SiddhAntham and his arpaNams flowed like a mighty river touching both the banks of sangItham and Bhakthi. The result was the nectar of Sri Raama Naama siddhAntham , which was like navanItham/ ThirattuppAl and was distributed to the bhakthAs during his Unchivrutthi , regular Bhajanais , EkAdasi vratha bhajanai , nithyOthsavams and VisEsha Uthsavams like Sri Raama navami .He plunged into the deep ocean of SangItham and brought out radiant rare gems and pearls and strung them into exquisite necklaces and placed them at the sacred feet of the Lord as his arpaNams.
