SrI:

Dear BhakthAs of OppilA Appan :

We will now enjoy the ten paasurams of Periya Thirumozhi 6.2
of Thirumangai Mannan about ThiruviNNagarappan .

In the previous ten paasurams , Thirumangai AzhwAr appealed to
the Lord to bless him with His auspicious arsanam and vowed to banish
the Manai Vaazhkkai in return . He asked the Lord nine times for that boon .
Nothing happened . EmperumAn did not respond .Thirumangai wondered
why the Prabhu of ThiruviNNagar was indifferent . The astute AzhwAr
recognized that ThiruviNNagarappan was testing his resolve about
his intentions and promises to quit the samsAric temptations .
Thirumnagai decided to put in to practise what he promised to do
instead of talking about his intentions ; he execute his intentions
and then approached the Lord once again to gain the boon
that he sought . Thirumangai lists now one by one the efforts
he has taken and describes his humble mental state of helplessnes
(agathi , ananya saraNan ) with which he is approaching
the Lord for refuge at His sacred feet .

Thirumangai lists all the trials and tribulations that he went thru
and the transformations in him as a result of those harrowing
experiences . AzhwAr appeals to the Lord to take in to account
his vivekam and VairAgyam that he has gained from his sufferings
associated with the incidents prior to his appeal for aasrayaNam
at ThiruviNNagarappan's Thiruvadi .

In the first paasuram , Kaliyan explains that he could not bear all
the samsAric sufferings anymore and cites that as the compelling
reason for seeking refuge at the Lord's sacred feet .

In the second paasuram , AzhwAr connects his misfortunes of timeless births
in different wombs to his forgetfulness of the Lord at critical times .

In the third Paasuram , AzhwAr observes that birth in this SamsAric world
is largely prathikoolam ( interference , counter weight to the efforts to
perform kaimkaryam to the Lord at His Supreme abode and to enjoy
BrahmAnandham there ) .

In the fourth Paasuram , AzhwAr concedes that the children and wife
and attachment to them does not help in the efforts to seek moksham .
They hold one mired in the mud of samsAram .

In the fifth Paasuram , Thirumangai states that the wealth that we run
after are perishable and non-lasting and thay wont help us in our saadhana
to reach the Para Brahmam .

In the sixth Paasuram , AzhwAr points out that the panchEndhriyams
are tyrannical in their grip and wont permit us to follow the path
that will lead us to Moksham .

In the seventh paasuram , AzhwAr appeals to the Lord of ThiruviNNagar
to take note of the changes in him as a result of his intense fight with
all the opposing factors that held him back from the Lord until then .

In the eighth and the ninth paasurams , AzhwAr refers to the sins
accumulated from his worldly way of life chasing alpa sukhams and
performs his saraNAgathy to ThiruviNNagarappan as the mOksha
dhAyaka , Sujana Saarvabhouman . In the tenth paasuram , Kaliyan
states that those who recite and meditate on the meanings of
the ten Paasurams of this decad will be blessed to join the nithyasooris
(eternally liberated souls like Garudan , VishvaksEnar et al) and
stay in Sri Vaikuntam with them forever serving the Lord .

In the next posting , we will study the first Paasuram of the Periya
Thirumozhi 6.2 .
