SrI:

Dear All :

Sriman Sivaraman is a new Member of
the Raama Bhakthi Group , which I have
the BhAgyam to moderate .

In the first week of his membership already ,
Sri Sivaraman is providing us great inspiration
and links to great Musicians and NadhOpAsakAs .
I welcome his choice inputs and focus on the links
to great composers and Musicians .

I have had the privelege of meeting Sangeetha
KalAnidhi Madurai MaNi Iyer at Oppiliappan
Koil KalyANothsava Cutcherys along with Sriman
Vembu Iyer . He was accompanied by KumbakONam
RaajamANicckam Pillai on the violin and Paalaghat
MaNi Iyer on Mrudhangam . What a divine Music
they created and served together
as SamarpaNam to Sri BhUmi Devi SamEta
Sri Oppiliappan during their Iypasi KalyANa Utsavam .
The KaambhOji , the UmAbharaNam as well
as the PoorNachandrikA Krithis of Saint Thyagaraja
are still ringing in my ears . This great tradition has
been preserved and grown by Sangeetha KalA nidhi
Sri TVS gloriously . He is indeed the great torch bearer
of Mathurai MaNi Iyer and His guru Sri Pushpavanam
Iyer .

I am glad that Sriman SivarAman is sharing
great Musical Treasurers from his Library .
I look forward to joining with him and writing
commentaries on the krithis to bring out
the great Bhakthi bhAvam/ Tattvams
that our Musical Trinity and their descendants
have blessed us with and make Raama Bhakthi
group scale new heights in Bhagavath Bhakthi
experience .

Please become a Member of Raama Bhakthi
group and cover krithis from BhadrAchala
Raama Das and other great NadhOpAsakAs .
I think we have 250 or so Members now
and it will be good to have more contributing
Members like Sriman SivarAman .

You can become a Member by sending mail to
RaamaBhakthi-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
and contribute to the growth of this site .

Thank you Sriman Sivaraman ,
NamO NamO RaaghavAya anisam ,
Oppiliappan Koil V.Sadagopan

P.S : Detailed anubhavam of
Saint Thyagaraja"s Pancharatna
Kritis are available for your enjoyment in

School

>
> Here is my humble tribute to a great musician. It is my write-up on the
> great musician along with a concert that he performed at Sankethi
> Sangeetha Sammelana - 2007, uploaded today.
>
>
>
>
> 1.T.V. Sankaranarayanan has a distinctive style with a rich repertoire
> of performance skills which includes a rich and vibrant voive,
> imaginative phrasing and spontaneous swaraprastharas embellished with
> effortless prayogas. All this he has inherited and mastered from his
> Guru and uncle,MMI, the doyen of the Carnatic World.
>
> 2.The renowned music critic, the Late Subbudu paid him a rich encomium in
> these words:
> "Sankaranarayanan is indeed an asset to the Carnatic music world, where
> the tribe of good vocalists is dwindling."
> 3.He started learning music from his uncle, the doyen and colossus of
> carnatic music, the Late Madurai Mani Iyer.
> 4.Gave his first public performance in 1968,accompanied by
> T.N.Krishnan(violin) and Velore Ramabhadran(mridhangam),and was
> acclaimed as a rising star by Veteran violinist TNK.
> 5.He truly imbibed and inherited his uncle MMI's "Bani",the hallmark of
> which was traditional classicism, juxtaposed with vibrant
> phrasing,cascading brigas,vibrant phrasing and emotive bhakthi bhava.To
> this he added his own tonal quality of his rich voice to captivate both
> lay rasikas and also the connoiseurs of music.
> 6.He has never looked back after his first public performance, but has
> become one of the leading lights of today's carnatic scend. No music
> season in Chennai is complete without a TVS performance at the Music
> Academy.
> 7.Has toured extensively abroad and given public performances number of
> times in U.S and Canada,and also in other western nations.In 1976,he
> delivered the John Coltrane Memorial World Music Series Lecture at the
> IVY League, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, amidst thunderous acclaim
> from a discerning audience of international musicians.
> 8.Though he qualified as an advocate(B.Com/LLB), he chose to give up
> practising Law, in favour of his primary passion,Carnatic Music. The loss
> to the legal profession has been the gain of the Carnatic World.
> 9.His rich and exuberant musical mind has always sought to explore new
> dimensions in carnatic music, and he has presented many rare ragas like
> "Surya","Urvika","nasikabhushany" etc.to the delight of his rasikas.
> 10.He has been the recipient of many awards and titles:
>
> Awards and honours
>
> * Ganakalaratnam by Dr. Semmangudi Srinivasa Ayyar in 1987
> * Gayaka Sikhamani by Bhairavi, USA in 1981
> * Swara Laya Ratnakara by Ramakrishnananda Saraswati of Sri
> Vidyasram, Rishikesh in 1986
> * Nadakanal By Nadakanal, Madras in 1987
> * Innisai Perarasu By Bharati Kalamandram, Toronto in 1981
> * Sangeetha Ratnakara By Vassar College in 1975
> * Swara Yoga Shironmani By Yoga Jivana Satsangha (International)in
> 1997
> * Saneet Natak Akademi Award in 1990
> * Padma Bhushan by Govt. of India in 2003
> * Sangeetha Kalasikhamani by The Indian Fine Arts Society in 2005
> * Sangeeta Kalanidhi title awarded by Chennai Music
> Academy on 2nd Jan,2004.
>
> 11.Not only has TVS risen to the forefront of the carnatic music world,
> but he has inherited all the qualities of humility and greatness from
> his Late uncle, the maestro MMI.At many of the concerts, in his earlier
> days, he just came, rendered a superb concert and never bothered about
> whether the organisers had accorded him a grand welcome and
> felicitation, and left home by public transport, declining the offer by
> the organisers to drive him home.
> 12.He adored his Guru and uncle,MMI and worshipped him totally. He says
> about his Guru:
> "TVS says: "I was blessed with great parents, and a greater guru in my
> uncle." "Enakku idhe periya bhagyam," he declares passionately. "To be
> the disciple of a deiva purusha..." .
> He sat at the feet of his Guru and learnt diligently, basking in the
> ambience of his uncle's glorious "bani", which could cater to a broad
> spectrum of tastes, be it egalitarian or the common masses. It is
> apparent today that he has been a true torch-bearer of the MMI School of
> Music, and even has done much to enhance this bani with his own
> creativity.
> 13. More than the awards and titles, he also respected the leading
> luminaries of carnatic music and their opinion about his music.Much
> earlier before he got the coveted Sangeeta kalanidhi title, M.S.Amma
> once remarked,"Sankara, you should have been awarded the Sangeeta
> Kalanidhi this year", he was deeply moved and with tears in his eyes, he
> answered:
> " I did obtain it Amma.Just Now from you"
>
> 14.For him, more than the awards and titles that he has earned, it is
> also the "athma thrupthi" of enjoying his own music with total
> involvement in his concerts full of classicim, vibrancy, rich
> phrasing,exceptional manodharma,imaginative raga
> alapanas, neravals, sangatis and swaraprastharams to please his
> audience. This was a result of the priceless lessons he had learnt from
> his Guru,MMI, who advised him how to respect his music and his rasikas:
> "Don't try to compete with others in your field.Sing for yourself and
> your soul."
> "Respect the rasikas.Whether you sing in an auditorium of 3000 persons,
> or you perform before 10 discerning rasikas, do not dilute the quality
> of your music".TVS really demonstrated this in one of his concerts, when
> heavy rains during the concerts made many of his audience leave home
> early, but he continued singing for a handful of his rasikas long into
> the night, not bothering about the depletion of the audience.
> TVS also learnt another priceless lesson from his Guru MMI, who advised
> him to be a true "Karma Yogi", not expecting accolades or money, but
> just be true to his art and give his best everytime, and all the
> recognition, awards and titles will follow automatically"
> 15. Today, at the peak of his career, TVS truly symbolises and
> epitomises all the great qualities of his Guru,MMI:
> Devotion to his music, dedication in concerts, respecting the rasikas,
> humility and modesty, respect for his co-artistes and all senior
> vidwans, leading a simple and humble lifestyle etc.
> May God give him a long life and good health to enable him to spread the
> joy of the MMI Bani of delightful music for a long time to come.
