namaha The dasama skandam (10th canto) of Srimad bhagavatham talks largely about the krishnAvataram. This is the favourite skandam of all Krishna lovers. It is said that the actual essence of bhagavatham itself is only the tenth canto and the previous nine are just an avatarikai-Introduction. The first nine are just appetizers preparing us for a delicious meal. At the end of the ninth canto sukAcharya talks about the ramAvatara and completes krishnavatara very briefly. Parikshit who was eagerly waiting to here about the leelas of Krishna his life-saviour was highly disappointed. He therefore requested sukar to tell him in more detail about the krishnavatara. Sukar was more eagerly waiting to say the same but hesitated considering the tiredness of parikshit who was earlier a king enjoying pleasures. Since now parikshit himself confessed that all his tiredness due to samsAram till today has been washed out hearing bhagavat kalyana gunas sukar continued with the pravachanam (lecture). The very start of the tenth canto talks
about the necessity of emperuman taking avathara as Krishna. Bhoomi piratti not being able to
withstand the atrocities on the earth, with eyes full of tears complained to
brahma. Brahma and others prayed to
emperuman to save bhoomi piratti from this difficulty. Emperuman assured brahma that he would
take a special avathara as a son of devaki and vasudevar and do dusta nigraham
and sista paripAlanam (“parithrAnAya sAdhoonAm vinA shAyatha dushkruthAm dharma
samstApanArthAya sambhavAmi yugE yugE”).
Brahma then instructed all the devas who were interested in enjoying the
avatara of emperuman to take birth on earth. So for the sake of bhoomi piratti emperuman and all the devas decided to take birth. Let’s see what happened then in the next posting.
