WHAT IS IN A
NAME?
One of my friends called me to find
out a sutiable name for his new born baby on the month of Ani in the
star- svAthi. adiyEan suggeted the name of EmperumAn -Narasimhabn.
He settled for 'achyuth'. I was happy. He explained that he wanted
a name starting in a, au or somehting like that and so he had selected and
'achyuth' a common name in kerala. I was happy about the name but not the method
of selection.
There are dedicated webistes for
selecting the names. All the bookstores definitely have a book dedicated on "how
to select the name for your child?'
These are all dedicated on the
syllable, date of birth and astrology.
In earlier years, the names used to
be taken from that of grandfather. Politics also played a big role and people
take names of political leaders for their children.
I have seen the names of
tholkAppian, TheAmbAvani -These are names from tamil
literature.
Nowadays, it is all fancy names. In
North India, i see names like bobby, nitin, pappu very
popular.
More wierd is the fact, that a
person reelng in abject penury holding the name 'kOTeswaran' - crorepathy - or a person with defective
vision- kaNNAyiram- or a black one named -veLLayan, the white- or a girl with complete black
complexion named as -Poornima.
Is there a need to refer to
such repository of names? Is there a need to follow a particular
syllable based name? Are these useful for posterity?
