MESSAGE FROM THE
CROW
'Today we
will have guests' declared my uncle. This was, when i was a schoolboy. Those days
thee were no emails, telephone etc. There was no personal communication,
either. I was really wonderstruck when actually the guests turned up. It
may be coincidence but i was really amazed by the
prediction.
I enquired my uncle regarding his
ability and he replied that it was no magic but he just read the message from
the crow. He used to say 'one for sorrow, 'two for
guests' and three for joy' and pointed at the
black necked crow 'aNDam kAkkA'.
It is really surprising even today,
the random crowing of the crow is deciphered as some messages and signals the
probability of guests arriving. The crow, as we all know, is a creature
which does not originates sound, based on such kind of logic.
Thirumangai AzvAr requests the wall
lizard to sound, portending the arrival of EmprumAn.
'kottAi pallik
kuTTi.maTTAr PUNkuzhal mAdhavani vara..koTTAi pallik kuTti.' he would say
in Thirumozhi 10-10-4;
Even the sound of lizard is taken
as sacrosanct by our ancestors, says svAmi Nam Azvar in Thiruvirutham 48 'thiurmAl avan kavi yAdhu kaTREAn palliyil sollum sollAi
koLLuvadhuNdu paNdu paNDEa'

pADiniyAr was a famous poet in old days who used to read from the sounds of
crows and encourage the wives of warriors who had gone to the
battlefield.
PeriyAzvAr reasons out thus 'Though my tongue may not utter the right noises -vAkkuth
ThUimayilAmainAlEa..' I chant your name and You should give
weight to that My Lord.
'If you are not going to utter
right things, why should i give weight?' asks EmperumAn.
Pat comes the reply ' Our ancestors
give weight even to the sounds of crow and believe its random cries. Why not You
EmperumAn, reckon my cries,in that context. Going by that logic, EmperumAn, You
have to consider my ramblings' argues our AzvAr and further points out that
since He is the cause and protector, should He not do
this?
