Post 10

Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

In my previous post I stated in explanation for that slokam 5-1-77 'praavrushTi –

"nabhasi – sraavaNa maasam or bhaadhra maasam – [nabha, nabhas – both are stated as July- August, and /or August- September in Monier Williams dictionary]"

But slokams 37 and 38 in skandham 12 of sreemadh bhaagavatham read with a translation are -

indhrO visvaavasuh srOthaa Elaapathra sthhathaangiraa: |

pramlOchaa raakshasO varyO nabhO maasam nayanthyamee || 12-11-37

Translation: Indhra, Visvaavasu, srOthaa, Elaapathra, Sthhahthaa, aangiraa, PramlOchaa, raakshasa, Varya, are the ones ruling the month of Nabhas (SraavaNa, July / August).

vivasvaan ugrasEnas cha vyaaghra aasaaraNO bhrugu: |

anumlOchaa sankhapaalO nabhasyaakhyam nayanthyamee || 12-11-38

Translation: Vivasvaan, Ugrasena, Vyaaghra, aasaaraNa, Bhrigu, anumlochaa, Sankhapaala are the ones ruling the month of Nabhasya (Bhaadhrapadha, August / September).

One month is nabha and other is nabhasya. So for our reference it is nabha: [with declension it is nabhasi]. To that extent I stand corrected.

Now coming to that aththaththin paththaam naaL –

maththak kaLiRRu vasudhEvar thammudai

siththam piriyaadha dhEvaki than vayiRRil

aththaththin paththaa naaL thOnRiya achchuthan

muththam irunthavaa kaaNeerE mugizh nagaiyeer vandhu kaaNeerE.

This 'aththam' – 'hastham' in Sanskrit – adhan paththaam naaL – is 'thiruvONam' – so aththaththin paththaa naaL is thiruvONam – so annaaLil thOnRiya achchuthan --as per poorvars.

The following is purely my speculation – I would like learned bhagathaas to comment.

The tenth nakshathram of 'thirovOnam' is 'rOhiNi' – since in counting the nakshathrams and the 12 squares in the raasi chakram, the present one at beginning is also included - similar way if you count rOhiNi to hastham is 10, hastham to thiruvONam is 10, thiruvOnam to rOhiNi is also 10. But if you add all three it will 30 instead of 27 – i.e. because you are counting these 3 stars twice.

Now coming to that word aththaththin – this word I split as a h dhu + a h dhu – the h being the 13 th vowel akh in tamil language.

If you combine then it is ahdhahdhu + in – ahdhahdhin or aththaththin – slight maruvudhal – changing -- to bring that rhythm – edhugai – mOnai etc in tamil –

with the other three words 'maththa, chiththa, aththa, muththa,

which should come in the beginning of a line for tamil grammar.

So from that "thiruvONaththaan" stated in 3 rd verse, if you calculate forward then it is rOhiNi.

If you want to go back, then it is twice – which again is rOhiNi.

Perhaps a shrewd one among you may ask,

'why twice in back calculation only and not in forward?',

then my answer will be –

In forward - adhu - hey that conclusion is - adhin paththaa naaL. 'adhu' - that star – it is 10 th from thiruvOnam – that thiruvOnaththaan from 3rd verse.

In backward - ahdhahdin paththaa naaL – twice do it. Why? Mainly to put it secretive and make it slightly confusing.

For aazhvaar is always interested in child krishNa's welfare.

[that is the comment I received from two more bhaagavathaas also – "without considering the time factor ?" – then a big "yes"].

[While commenting on the above speculation - my sincere request is -- Please do not bring in those views of 'abachaaram' etc -- to interpret -- for what we are trying to do is 'to understand the paasuram 'better and better' by interpreting, in different ways, thereby trying to enjoy it more and more.

The interpretation can be rejected as trash - if not acceptable].
