Here it is again worth noting Acharya Bhattar's opinion on chanting (japam). He says niyama viSEshavan mantrAdi Avartnam is japam or repeating mantras etc. with some principles attached. A brahmin is still considered a brahmin if he does japam (chanting), whether he does other karmas or not, says Bhattar quoting from Manusmrti. What one has to chant? stuvan nAma sahasrENa - clarifies Bhattar, thousands of names of the Lord which glorify His qualities. Then why ashtAksharI japam is not prescribed in Ramanuja sampradayam? One may get a doubt. It is a single mantra and meaning is available. So it is convenient to concentrate on the meaning. In case of stOtras like vishNu sahasranAma, somebody has to be an Eisnstein to understand and chant simultaneously. In such cases, remembering them repetitively gives confidence and is convenient. jIyar thiruvadihaLE SaraNam adiyEn rAmAnuja dAsan Vishnu --- In ramanuja@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "Mohan Ramanujan" <mohan_ramanujan@xxxx> wrote: > Dear Sri Kesavan, > > Please note that Gayathri mantra is in praise of "Savitr" meaning the supreme being who is nothing but SrimanNarayana. The term "Gayathri" is attributed to Chandas and not any Devata. So do not hesitate to chant Gayathri mantra. > > I tried my best to clarify your doubt.
