Sri: Srimathe Ramanujaya nama: Dear Smt Sumitra Varadarajan, Accept my pranams. Your article is very good but I disagree with the writing style of your paragraph which portrays Sri PiLLai lOkAcAryA's writings totally different. Read your last statement "here lOkAcAryA says that aj~nAnam is the root for mangaLAshAsanam". In my understanding of SVB,Sri PL nowhere says that aj~nAnam is the root cause for mangaLAshAsanam and I would love to be corrected by bhAgavathAs if I'm wrong in understanding Sri PL. One has to understand "j~nAna vibhAga kAryamAna aj~nAnaththAlE..." rightly. There is a difference between a person who talks in total ignorance(aj~nAnam) and a person who talks utter nonsense(could be totally uncorrelated subject matters also)all of a sudden due to the mental imbalance of "excessive knowledge(this can happen if there are zillions of neuron cells)". PeriyAzhvAr, NammAzhvAr,and Tirumangai AzhvAr all come "roughly" under the second category(AzhvArs lives can not be compared with ours). It is not due to aj~nAnam. PS: See the movie Rainman and Dustin Hoffman, who played the role of Genius cum "schizophrenic(eccentric at times)" won the Oscar. Ignorance is different from forgetting. Also we have to remember that PeriyAzhvAr envisaged himself as YashOda and the Lord as his child. No matter how old or expert in Karate/Kung-Fu the son is,the mother still would see the son as a child only. I do not know in what order PeriyAzhvAr wrote his Thirumozhi but the way it is set in NDP is from PallANdu to SenniyOngu (which is packed with knowledge). If our inherent nature is to do service/kaimkaryam to the Divine Couple, and if our service to be effective, then we are bound to do mangaLAshAsanams for the Lord. If you had written exactly as per Sri PB Annangaracariar Swami's words (Sri PL says that aj~nAnam is the root for managLAshAsanam),I would like to know the name of the book, publishers so that I can tell my father to send me a copy. AhzvAr emperumAnAr jIyar thiruvadigaLE sharaNam NC Nappinnai > This paasuram awakens periyAzhvar (periyAzhvar thirupalliezhuchi). > Andal calls periAzhvar as "pillAi!" One who is ignorant is called > as "pillAi". What is periAzhvar's ignorance? Periazhvar is > ignorant (has forgotten) of the fact that perumal is sarva > rakshakan (one who is the saviour of all) and hence he does > mangalasasanams to perumal for the welfare of emperuman. Hence > andal calls periAzhvar as "pillAi". "jnana vibhAga kAryamAna > agnAnaththAlE varumavaiellAm adikazhanju perum" says pillai > ulagAriyan in his Srivachana bhooshanam. Here lokAcharya shows > that agnanam is the root for mangalAsAsanam.
