After Ramanujar did service for some time to DevAdhirajan, and got the doubts
clarified, Ranaganathar thought it was the right time to bring Ramanujar to
Srirangam to make him JagatAchAryan. He sent araiyar to Kacchi to bring
Ramanujar. Listening to the pasurams of Azhwars from Araiyar with abhinavam,
Lord DevarAjan was in completel joy. He was ready to grant whatever Araiyar
asked for. Remembering the purpose of his visit, Araiyar Swami asked for
Ramanujar. DevAPerumAl was completely sad for a moment, and immediately thought
that He should have asked Araiyar to ask for anything other than Ramanujar. To
keep up His word, He said ?Thanthom?. Everything started to happen in our
sampradAyam from that moment. This was the great thyAgam that DevaPerumAl did
more than anything else. Though Srirangam is the root for our sampradAyam,
DevaPerumAl sowed the seed from Kacchi.

Let us look at some anubhavams of Azhwars and AchAryAs of DevaPerumAl.

The first 10 pasurams of NammAzhwar?s ThiruvAyamozhi is attributed to
DevaPerumAl. It clearly talks about the supremacy of PerumAl. NammAzhwar?s
vigraham in Kacchi is such that his finger points towards himself and teaching
the paratattvam and asking his manas to surrender before PerumAl.

Swami Desikan also has strong links to this Divya Desam. Showing his vairAgyam
to his childhood friend, he refused to take any kind of wealth from him.
Because of this, he sang VairAgya PanchAsat. Here is what he says in that,

? Neither do I have any health, nor has my father saved any wealth for me. But
our Grandfather has saved a big wealth for us, which is the ornament adorning
the chariot of Arjuna. That ornament is none but DevaPerumAl, who is standing
on the Hasthigiri?

DevaPerumAl also gave sight to KoorathAzwan, along with the boon of granting
mOksham to NaloorAn. NaloorAn was responsible for the loss of eye sight of
KoorathAzhwan. KoorathAzhwan, known for his vairAgyam was actually the pavitram
of Swami Ramanujar. He was the one who helped EmPerumAnAr to complete Sri
Bashyam.

Like how NamPerumAl is known for nadai azhagu, DevaPerumAl is known for his
Kodai azhagu. Garuda Sevai is the most important event that happens every year
during Vaikasi Visagam (NammAzhwar?s Thirunakshatram).

He purposefully hid himself in Garu Sevai to grant darshan to Swami
DoddaiyAchAr, who was a great MahAn performing kaimkaryam to AkkArakkani. Due
to sickness (for mahAns, we call that nOvu sAthikkolluthal?), Swami
DoddaiyAchAr was not able to visit Kacchi that year. He was standing near the
ThakkAn kulam with the thoughts on Garuda Sevai. Because of this longing of one
BhaktA, DevaPerumAl hid Himself and offered darshan to DoddaiyAchAr. Even
today, DevaPerumAl is hid by kodai for few moments. Let us try to end our
discussion on thyAga mandapam with the verse from ManavAla Mamunigal?s DevarAja
Mangalam,

adhyApi sarvabhoothAnAm abheeshta PaladhayikE

praNathArthiharAyAsthu prabhavE mama mangaLam

MangaLam to my Lord VaradarAja , who blesses the assembly of boon-seekers even
today , just as he responded to the wish of BrahmA in days of Yore . He is my
Prabhu, who removes all the obstacles and difficulties that we face on this
earth.

aDiyEn,

ramanan
