Sri:
Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama:

Sri Pillai Lokacharya's
Mumukshuppadi

Sutra:
56. sEshathvam illAtha pOthu SvarUpam illai.

57. AthmApahAramAvathu Svathanthram enkiRa ninaivu:
SvathanthramAmpOthu illaiyAy vidum.

Meaning:
56. Only through sEshatvam is the nature of the soul to be
determined.

57. The stealing of the soul, which is the thought that one
is completely independent, is the highest sin as per the
Sastras. This assertion of independence is the opposite of
sEshatvam and as such brings great danger to the realization
of one's true nature.

Sri PBA Swami's Sarartha Deepikai:
Why say sEshatvam is the nature of the soul; does it then
mean that the soul which is knowledge does not have a
nature outside of sEshatvam?

No says Sri Pilla Lokacharya. If there is no sEshatvam
then it brings about the thought that one's nature is
independence. Such a thought is known as stealing one's
soul. This thievery is considered to be the root of all
sins. So, as soon as a person thinks that he is fully self
dependent he immediately loses the realization of his true
nature. Therefore it is correct to say "without sEshatvam
there is no svarUpam".

With this the meanings of the akAram are concluded.
