Swamy Manavala mAmunikal in his upadesaratnamalai celebrates the thiruavadhara
days of all the Azhvars and acharyas. While taking about the thiruvadipoora day
of Sri Andal he says, ?AndAlukkundAgiya oppidharkkum vundu? and while talking
about swamy emperumAnAr?s thiruavadhara day chittaraiyil seiya thiruvAdhirai he
says, ?AzhvArgal thAngal vandhudhiththa nAlgalilum vAzhvAna nAl namakku
mannulageer?. Now what to say about this Iyppasithirumoolam, the day on which
the greatest of the greatest acharya, the acharya of the lord ranganatha
himself took avatharam. No words can really express the greatness of this day.
We can only do mangalasasanams to this divine acharya by saying, ?adiyArgal
vAzha aranganagar vAzha, satakOpan than thamizh nool vAzha, kadal soozhindha
mannulagam vAzha, manavAla mAmuniyEennum oru nootrAndirum?.

Extract from Sri P.B Annagarachariyar swamy?s upanyasam:

The second term in the ?srisailesa? thaniyan rendered by Azhagiya manavalan as
a gurudhashina to his acharya is ?dheebhakthyAdhi gunArnavam? In this ?Adhi?
refers to virakthi/virakhyam. A good acharya should be filled with jnana,
bhakthi and vairakhyam. While talking about the greatness of nathamunigal, Sri
Alavandaar in his stotra ratnam says, ?namOchinthyAth bhudhAklishta jnana
vairAkhya rAsayE, nAdhAya munayE agAdha bhagavath bhakthi sindhavE? There again
alavandaar personifies the acharya nathAmunigal to be filled with jnana,
bhakthi and vairakhyam. Swamy mAmunikal was an ocean of jnana, bhakthi and
vairakhya and that is why namperumal selectedhim to be his acharya. Bhakthi
develops both jnana and vairakhya in a person. This is clear from the following
verses, ?bhakthyA sAsthrAth vEdme jnAnArththam? (words of sanjaya) and ?marpAl
manam suzhippa mangaiyarthOl kaivittu? and ?paramAthmani yO rakthO viraktha:
aparamAthmani?.

Further let us see the similarities between the ocean of water and ocean
ofgunas (Swamy Manavala mAmunikal) in eight different ways. The following sloka
gives the similarities that will be then explained in detail:

?sailEndrAthyushithO maneendraparitha: saththApasAntharkatha:

kAlushyasya kathAprasanga rahitha: velAnadheethO druvaha:

1. sailEndrAthyushitha: - There is a lot of similarities between the sea and
mamunikal. In the early days, all the mountains had wings and hence used to fly
from one place to another. This used to cause a lot of nuisance to the people.
So indra took his vajrAyudham in his hand and cut down the wings of all the
mountains. During that time many mountains like the mainAgam and others hid
themselves under the sea. It is said in many books that they still remain under
the sea. In valmiki Ramayana, in the first sarga of sundarakandam there is a
conversion between mainAga and hanuman that proves the above said legend. While
comparing the sea with the kadalvannan (emperuman) thirumangai azhvar in his
attapuyakarapadhigam says, ?neeNda malaigalum mAmaNiyum malarmEl mangaiyum
thangugindra alaikadal pOndrivar? (thirumozhi 2-8-5). So the quality ?sailEndra
athyishitha:? fits the ocean of water. Now let?s see how it fits swamy
mAmunikal. Swamy thiruvaimozhi pillai is the acharya of
mAmunikal. He is otherwise called thirumalaiazhvar or srisailEsar. He
isregarded as the sailEndrar here. Mamunikal learnt the sastras from
thiruvaimozhipillai or he did the gurukulavAsam under srisailEsar. Thereby in
case of the ocean of water it has to be kept as sailEndrai: athyushitha:
(karmani prayog as per Sanskrit grammar) and in case of mAmunikal it is
sailEndram athyushitha: (karthari prayog).
