A Peep into Periya Thiru-Mozhi The Goldsmith Workspot-thiruk-kOvalUr It is widely known that thirumangai AzhwAr is immensely affectionate towards dhivya-dhEsam-s. The examples he uses to narrate the richness is wonderful. These examples are indeed common in real life but make a strange correlation. sri kaliyan relates the workspot of a goldsmith to the richness of thirukkOvalur. What do we find in a goldsmith room? Coal pieces would be ready for use. The gold and pearls will be scattered. Fire will be lit and alive at one side to facilitate the jewel making work. This is what is exactly described by AzhwAr. Where do we find these? The karu-neidhal pU-black neidhal flower resembles the coal - fuel to power the fire. the punnai buds reflect the pearls. the blossomed flowers reflect gold and the red lotus in the ponds show out the fire. Indeed an excellent comparison. The pAsuram: ".... ezhundha malar karunElam irundhil kAtta, irumpunnai mutharumbi sem-pon kAtta, sezhum thada nEr kamalam thEvigai pOl kAttum, thirukkOvalUr adhanuL kaNdEan nAnEa" Periya thirumozhi 2-10-3; ezhundha malar karunElam irundhil kAtta----> karuneidhal pU- kari. irumpunnai muthu---> the punnai buds --> pearls. arumbi sem-pon kAtta- fllowers--------> gold sezhum thada nEr kamalam thEvigai pOl kAttum---> the fire . Should we not then consider that AzhwAr's pAsuram-s is Gold, Gold and Gold.
