There are many interesting lessons from the following story. It
answers many questions as
1)We are advised by Krishna to be free from desires. But did Lord
vishnu have any desire or not?
2)How did mother Laxmi identify Vishnu in various avathars?
It seems that when mother laxmi came out of the occean of milk, there
was a mad scramble among devas and asuras to marry her. Finally an
idea was given.A swayamvara was decided to be held.Mother Laxmi was
given a garland. She gave one condition to chose her husband."I will
marry anyone who doesnt desire me" she said.
It seems to be an easy condition. But legend has it that none could
even pretend as to not to desire her. Many devas tried to conceal
their desire, but they couldnt. Many tried to pretend, but they
couldnt. Finally mother Laxmi went to vaikunda where the "kariya
thirumeni"(black one) was laying.
"Who are you" asked the Kariya thirumeni.
"Dont you desire me?" asked mother Laxmi.(She saw those eyes, but
never found any desire in them. She saw in those eyes only happiness
and karunya(affection,love)
"Dont I have any other job?" replied the Kariya thirumeni.
Immediatly Mother Laxmi garlanded him and since he was karunamoorthy
he immediatly took her and placed her in his heart. So goes the
legend. We see this repeated in every avathar of Lord vishnu and
Laxmi.
In Ramavathar Mother sita sees Ram for the first time. She immediatly
fell in love after she saw Ram's eyes.
"Annalum nokkinan, avalum nokkinal" says Kamba of this episode
(He looked and she too looked --goes the translation)
And Lord ram again expresses his desirelessness.Every king tried to
break the bow.Ram sat without desire. It was only after viswamithra
asked him to do so,did Ram touch the bow.Mother Sita's heart must
have beaten very fast every time some other king was trying it.
In Krishnavathar too this is repeated. It says that Radha Rani fell
in love with Krishna 3 times. Here is how she narrates her love to
her friend.
'I cannot tolerate this. One day I heard the name Krishna and fell in
love with that name immediatly. What a lovely name?Another day i
heard a flute music and immediatly lost my heart to the one who
played it.I tried to find out who it was,but he wasnt there when i
went. Then yesterday I saw a man standing under the trees and i fell
in love with him.How can a woman love three different persons at the
same time?"
Then her friend told mother Radha rani that all three were the same
persons.Mother's joy knew no bounds.
Mother Rukmani's episode is no different. She wrote this letter to
Krishna.
"In yagnas all devas will be offered their share(havis). No devatha
will accept havis which was given to other devatha. If this is the
case, how ludicrous will it look when a fox comes and snatches away
the havis offered to a devatha?
Similiarly I have offered my heart to you,the purushashima.Shisubala
having it is similiar to a fox snatching away the havis given to a
devatha."
Seeing this letter Krishna waged war with Rukma,Rukmani's brother
and took her.
Even in the sthalapuran of Tirupathi, when srinivas met padmavathi,it
says that she fell in love with him and made her father, a king,to
fix her to Lord Srinivas, who was in the avathar of a commoner.
So we can see that Lord Vishnu exhibit the characters which he asks
us to follow.Desirelessness(He did not even desire mother laxmi)and
accepting those who give their heart to him.
