Though knowing well the mental stability of azhvar, emperuman asked, "We see
that even the other devatas do jobs for the welfare of the devotees. So can
they also be worshipped"? "I will not worship any other deity and moreover it
is a well known fact that no one other than you (Sriman Narayanan) is capable
of granting moksha. The best witness for the above statement is rudra,"
declares azhvar.
(maRRu thozhuvAr oruvaraiyum yAninmai kaRRai sadaiyAn karikaNdAi) Sivan is the
witness for my ekabhakthi (not falling to any other feet)
(kaRRai sadaiyAn) The very sight of rudra's hair makes intelligent people
realize that he is not the paramatma. Oh! Lord there is nothing that you don't
know but still if you want some witness then ask your grandson rudra.
At this point azhvar probably was reminded of an incident in his lifetime.
Once while azhvar was in yoga meditating on the supreme lord, rudra and parvati
on top of a bull passed the area in the sky. Parvati was pleased with the
tapas of azhvar and thereby enquired about him to shiva. Shiva replied that he
was a great devotee of Narayanan. Parvati said, "Let us also give him darshan
and grant some boons". Accepting parvati's request shiva along with parvati
landed in front of thirumazhisai azhvar who ignored them and was busy with
stitching a torn cloth. Shiva enquired to azhvar, " we have come to bless you
but you are ignoring us is it right?" Azhvar replied," I don't need anything
from you that is why I ignored you" But shiva insisted," I do not want my visit
to be wasted hence ask something" Azhvar said," If that is the case then grant
me moksha" Rudra replied," I am not eligible to grant moksha that can be given
only by Sriman Narayanan so ask something else" Azhvar with a smile said," Then
atleast grant me long life so that I do a lot of penance in order to achieve
moksha" Shiva said, "That is decided by your karmas I cannot grant long life
for you so ask something else" Thirumazhisai azhvar with a kidding smile said,
"Then grant me a boon whereby this thread will come at the back of this needle"
Shiva got very angry with azhvar's cutting words and hence rudra opened his
third eye raged with anger in order to burn azhvar to ashes. Not worried even
a little bit azhvar said, "even if you show eyes throughout your body like
Indra I will never get worried" and opened an eye in his right leg's thumb.
The fire from that eye overcame the heat from shiva's eye and as a preventive
measure shiva made heavy rain to pour but least bothered about that
thirumazhisai azhvar was immersed in the bhakthi of emperuman. Amazed by that
act of thirumazhisai azhvar shiva gave him the name, "bhakthisArar".
Probably, reminded of the above incident azhvar says, "kaRRai sadaiyAn kari
kandAi" [kari-witness]
What should I do to you for all the deep bhakthi (ananya bhakthi) you have
towards me? Wondered emperuman. Azhvar says,
(eRRaikkum kaNdukol kaNdAi kadalvaNNA yAnunnai kaNdukolkirku mAru) Oh! Lord you
are filled with divine beauty pleasant to everyone's eyes like that of the
ocean. May you please bless me with ananyabhakthi and your darshan always not
only in this janma but for 'ezhezh piravi'. Oh lord! You made adiyen your
bhaktha only by mesmerizing with your divine beauty may you for ever keep me
under your feet and bless adiyen with your divine darshan.
