Thanks Sriman Sudarshan for elaborating on the japa principle. >>During japa, the counting of the number can be done either by hand or by a >>japamala (rosary)<< The Vedas declare "yagnOvai VishNuh" and the lord glorifies Japa in the BG as, "yagnAnam japa yagnOsmi". We hear uktis such as "satatam japEt" Satatam (ever connected) is the goal. Perhaps breathing (inhalation and exalation) is one thing we do naturally and even a small interruption makes us disconnected (very uncomfortable). It is noteowrthy that Kabir Das in one of his dOhas identifies our lung movements (the inhalation and exhalation) as the best rosary for japa. We may say this is perhaps the most convenient rosary for "ananyAschinta yantO mAm" "tasmAt sarvEshu kAlEshu" , to keep count of 10800...or whatever. dAsan K.
