Dear Members
I introduce myself a recent member to the group. My full name is Narasimhan
Krishnamachari Ravi.My native place is Natchiarkoil near Kumbakonam and settled
at
Mumbai.
Did sage Rishyasringa have a horn in his face?
To quote Kambaramayanam Balakandam verse 212
Varukalai piravum Needi Manuneri Varambum Vaimai
Tharukalai Maraiyum Ennin Sadhumugarku uvamai sandron
Thirukalai Udaya inda segathu uullor thanmai nera
orukalai Mugaa sringa uyar thavan Varudal Vendum.
Meaning :
Vashista tells Dasharatha that ( in the context of Puthra kamesthi yagna )
the man who knows all the shastras prevailing in this world including that of
Manudharma
shastra and can be compared to Sadurmuga Birma in his knowledge of the
awareness of
Meiporul in the vedas who is different from people of this world, has a horn in
his face
( orukalai Muga sringan ) a man of superior Thabas namely the Kalai kottu
munivan should
come here.
In tamil explanations ( urai ) of Kambaramayana Rishyasringa is always refered
to
as "Kalaikottu Ma munivan.".Kalai kottu means a man with a Deer horn.
There is no mention of this in C.R.Srinivasa Iyengar's translation of Valmiki
Ramayana?
I request this be clarified.
Ravi.
