Students of Tamizh literature and culture say that one of the oldest
concepts of the Goddess as a consort to ThirumAl is Nappinai. As
earlier postings confirm, Nappinai was the daugther of a local Tamizh
chieftain who proclaimed that his daughter would be the bride of the
man who could conquer seven wild bulls. Our Beloved Kannan (who is
called in ancient Tamizh as MayOn, was the only strong enough and,
perhaps, patient enough to tame the seven bulls, and hence the
beautiful bride Pinnai became His. Interestingly, Nappinai had no
knowledge or interest in this cowherd boy; she merely agreed to marry
whomever her father chose fit. Some AchAryas say that this is an
indication of the Lord's Grace Being Bestowed upon every one, even to
those who are at first disinterested in Him.
Very little about this Goddess is mentioned of Her in later stories,
but it is made clear that She is the Krpa of the Lord, just as we
regard thAyAr today.
