Dear swamin:

Adiyen is 'attempting' to answer some of your questions with best of my
'little' knowledge. Please do make a validation on them before adopting.

You asked:

> 1)In the sayam sandhya which direction should you face while doing

> the required a)Pranayams b)Achamans c)Sankalpa?

1a) during sAyam sandhya, ALL sankalpam and prAnayAmam are done facing WEST.

1b) Achamanam should always be done either towards EAST or NORTH. Some say
never towards south while I have not read any texts that agree towards west.
So during sAyam sandhyavandhanam, since Achamanam cannot be done facing
west, the next best option is towards NORTH.

> 2)Which direction should one face while doing a)Sankalpa for Gayatri

> b)Pranava Japa c)Ashtakshara Japa?

2a) For prAdha, East ?standing; for mAdhyanikam (north-standing, if
before noon) & (west ? sitting, if after noon); for sAyam WEST ? Sitting

2b) For prAdha, East ?standing; for mAdhyanikam (north-standing, if
before noon) & (west ? sitting, if after noon); for sAyam WEST ? Sitting

2c) For prAdha, East ?standing; for mAdhyanikam (north-standing, if
before noon) & (west ? sitting, if after noon); for sAyam WEST ? Sitting

Arghayam should be performed only in standing posture. At the time of
pouring, the performer has to raise his heels a bit and should stand only by
his toes (briefly during the fall of water for each arghayam). The water
should be leaving the hand as high as possible. The fingers of both hands
(EXCEPT THE THUMB AND INDEX - which SHOULD NOT touch) should be touching
each other and water pouring out from the tip of middle finger.

This is applicable for all kAla sandhyAvandhanam.

During prAdhas sandhyAvandhanam, one should never sit, except during
Achamanam (balancing the entire body only with two toes of foot).

During mAdhyanikam, if the time of performance during 'japa vidhi' exceeded
noon (1200hrs), then the rest of japavidhi, (which includes, Asana mandram,
prAnayama japam, gaythri japam, Ashtaksharam, EXCLUDING upasthAnam) has to
be done in sitting posture AND FACING WEST NOT NORTH! upasthAnam has to be
done in standing posture, facing NORTH. The sandhyAdi-devata-vandanam
should be started with WEST and then north, east and south.

Where as if the time of performing during ?japa vidhi? did not exceed noon,
the rest of japavidhi should be done standing and facing north.

During sAyam, as the time would have crossed noon obviously, all steps in
japavidhi again except upasthAnam are to be performed in sitting posture,
facing west.

> Does one have to stand while doing upasthanam?

            YES! ALWAYS!

            praAtha: standing, facing east

            mAdhyanika standing, facing north

            sAyam standing, facing west

Some other more authoritative texts like "Ahnika grandham" explain that it
is better to perform it outside. While doing outside, it should be taken
care that the place is quite neat and 'sudham'. The water sprinkled in the
land during the procedure should not be in walk area. I am not aware of
usage of panchapAtram, but generally, stainless steel can be avoided (in my
opinion).

I will attach a PDF of the sandhyAvandhanam procedure, which I am adopting
(sAma vedin, shishya of Sri Ahobila matam), which I prepared for ironing out
certain ambiguities in LIFCO publication. I will mark the texts (only
manthrams) in RED and BLUE colour, with which you can understand when to sit
and stand respectively. I am aware that some egroups does not permit
attachments due to the imminent danger of viruses. Due to these
restrictions, the attachment in this email might not be accessible for all.
I am ready to send them to those who solicit explicitly.

Hope this does not adds more confusion, if not at least, clears any! Please
revert back if in doubt?

Regards,

Dasan Narayanan.

PS: If possible, please buy the book named ?sandhyavandanam?, published by
Sri Nrusimha priya trust, which is the excerpt of ?Ahnika grandham? by Sri
Azhagiyasingar. The book will be available at Sri Nrusimha Priya trust,
Sri Desika Bhavanam, 27, Venkatesa Agraharam, Mylapore, Madras 600 004.PH:
24611540. Most of the doubts which is being asked and many other are
extensively clarified in that book.
