Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer,
We saw the thyaagaraaja krithi 'ramaa ramaNa' in raagam 'vasantha bhairavi' -
linked to seethaa's agni pravEsam - the krithi in full with word to word
meaning, points on raagam selection, pallavi and anupallavi, charaNam 1 in
previous three posts. We now take up charaNam 2.
charaNam 2
smaraNa dhelisi ElE paramaathmuDu neevE yannaanu
paamarulathO sari bOyinaTulE nee gOcharamulanE
balku konnaanu naa maaTalella karuNathO nijamu jEya varadhaa
dhaNDamu leeDinaanu sree raama raama parama
paavana naama sarOja lOchana
nannaadharaNa jEyuTaku intha karuvaina vidhamu Emi - [ramaa]
meaning: From the days when I cognized myself, I have said that only You are
the Supreme Lord who reigns over the Universe; I have been talking about your
appearance like the talks by ignorant people. I prostrated before You, O Lord
who bestows boons so that You may have mercy on me. Please make my words to
come true, O Lord, sree raama! O Lord raama! O Lotus Eyed lord, whose name is
supremely hallowed, what is the reason that You became so miserly in showing
affection towards me?
Point: Here seethaa pleads with raama 'why are you rejecting me, I know only
you as my lord, my husband my saviour' etc. However vaalmeeki's seethaa is
speaking 'not that much submissive' or 'as though in such a pitiable
condition'. See below
saha samvrudhDha bhaavaachcha samsargENa cha maanadha |
yadhi aham thE na vijnyaathaa hathaa thEna asmi saasvatham || 6-119-11
meaning: seethaa says to raama, 'hey one who protects my dignity [maanadha] -
since I am mingled [or entangled or bonded or married] with you [samsargam] and
grown up along with you [samvrudhDha], if I am not understood by you properly,
then I am lost forever.
1. From the days I recognized myself - that is when I am grown up to that stage
of getting married, [in 5th year to 12 th year] to be precise - bhudhdhi
therindha naaL mudhal in tamil - I recognized a super personality, you, only is
a match for me. That is adequately proved in that bow episode. Because I am an
ayOnijaa and with capacity to push that special and superior bow as a
playchild, I know only a super person like you only can be my lord and husband.
So please show mercy on me.
2. This word 'gOcharamulanu' is translated as appearance - means the figurative
or objective dimensions with colour etc as perceived by the eyes is what is
appearance. That way also it is ok. Another meaning is 'in the range
perceptible' - so here seethaa says 'nee gOcharamulanE balku konnaanu - 'I am
talking about you only as perceived by me or in the range understood by me -
already I am a cut above than normal beings - so when I talk something, that
also must be higher in that range. But you are talking in the 'paamara' -
common folk range - to me. Vaalmeeki puts that in slokam below -
kim maam asadhrusam vaakyam eedhrusam srOthra dhaaruNam |
rooksham sraavayasE veera praakrutha: praakruthaam iva || 6 -119 - 6
meaning: oh my brave lord - why you are talking to me in such a way like a
common man to a common woman in some unpleasant words. [un-parliamentary?]
[see here the usage of praakrutham - just recall achyutha satahakam of swamy
dhesikan - in praakrutham language - common man's language]
.
3. She says - 'paavana raama sarOja lOchana' - are all ST special in addressing
his raama - which are to be enjoyed.
'nannu aadharaNa jEyuTaku intha karuvaina vidhamu Emi ' - means why are
rejecting and not accepting me - like an ordinary man - for you know the very
purpose of all these acts - then why you reject.
math adheenam thu yath than mE hrudhayam thvayi varthathE |
paraadheenEshu gaathrEshu kim karishyaami aneeshvaraa || 6-119- 10
meaning: my heart is already with with you. Other parts which are not in my
control, what can I do with.
This slokam can be interpreted in two ways. - When raavaNa lifted me I became
unconscious and I did not realize what is happening to me or around me. But my
heart is always with you, so you know my real nature. So please show mercy.
Even when I was in asOka vanam my heart was always with you, when the body is
elsewhere what if ? - so you know my position really and why you are showing me
your miserliness in accepting me.
With that this charaNam points end. So let us move now on to next and last
charaNam - 3
charaNam 3
vyaajamulaku nEnu raajaala naNTEnu gOpaala gathilEka neethO
naajaali dhelupabOthE laajamulu vEgana nEla sree raama raama
aajaanu baahu raajaraaja sakala lOkapaala vinu bhaktha
thyaagaraajuni iNTa neevu raajillinaavu ganuka
nee japamunu needdu poojala viDuva jaala -[ramaa]
meaning: O Lord gOpaala! When I have said that I cannot come under your
pretexts, me the one, have no other recourse. If I tell you about my grief, why
do You get irritated, O Lord raama! O Lord whose hands reach to the knees, that
king of Kings, O Lord who protects all Worlds, please listen. You, majestically
appearing in the home of this thyaagaraaja, Your devotee, I shall not abandon
either chanting of Your name nor Your worship.
Points: 1. gOpaala - means 'protector of earth' - here it is not krishNa -
recall recent discussion on that 'gO' sabdham. Seethaa says 'I am the daughter
of mother earth - literally - so as husband of mine, you are the fittest to be
addressed gopaala'.
2. 'vyaajamulaku nEnu raajaala naNTEnu gOpaala gathilEka' - Here another
important point is to be said - when raama was angry and tongue lashed seethaa
- he addressed her as 'bhadhrE' - not once but 3 times - in slokams 6-118-15,
18, and 23.
Dear bhakthaas, You all know any thing repeated three times is 'sathyam' -
truth.
bhadhra - means auspicious, blessed, fortunate, happy, etc.
bhadhrE means my good lady.
These meanings are as per Monier Williams - Sanskrit English dictionary -page
745.
Addressing seethaa as 'bhadhrE' and then telling her 'you go anywhere' means -
it is nothing but some 'pretexts' for something. That is what ST also says here
- 'When I have said that I cannot come under your pretexts, me the one, have no
other recourse'.
3. thvayaa thu nara saardhoola krOdham Eva anuvarthathaa |
laghunEva manushyENa sthreethvam Eva puraskrutham || 6-119- 14
meaning: oh tiger among men, like an ordinary folk you are angry - with your
anger you are showing me 'sthreethvam' - the nature or qualities of a female.
This 'sthreethvam' qualities are 'suspecting, coming to conclusions in haste,
commenting in haste without knowing truth', etc.
That ST puts it as 'laajamulu vEgana nEla sree raama raama' 'pori porikkira
maadhiri pada padannu kovaththil pEsugireer - like a women in anger'.
Already in slokam 6, we saw vaalmeeki describing raama being addressed as
'mahaa baahu' which ST puts it as aajaanu bhaahu - meaing one and same, usage
different. Balance words are ST praising his lord raama - let us also do that
and enjoy this krithi more.
With this I conclude this series. Thank you for your time in reading and
enjoying this.
