Dear Sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Srimaan Krishnamacharya swamin has asked a clarification on performing sandhya
vandhanam during the aachoucha kaalam - viz. theettu kaalam - both janana or
vrudhdhi as well as maraNa aachoucham - i.e., piRappu, iRappu theettu kaalam.
also the reference below.

Following is the clarification as spelt in the 'sadhaachaara nirNayam' book by
prakrutham srimadh azhagiya singer swamy.

Refer page 187 - pirapputh theettilO iRapputh theettilO kooda sandhyaa
karmaavai vidak koodaadhu - anushtikka vENdum. Thaai thandhaiyargaLin savak
kriyai aayinum sandhyaavai anushtiththa piRaguthaan seyya vENdum. Sudhdhan
aayinum asudhdhan aayinum nithya karmaavai oru pOdhum kai vidak koodaadhu
enkiradhu dharma saasthram.

Just to translate this roughly - the performance of the sandhya karma should
not be given up during the period of theettu - even if the theettu is observed
for birth or death. Even if it is the death of one's own parents the
performance of religious rites to be carried out only after doing the nithya
karmaa of sandhyaa. If one is clean or unclean - [does not mean cleanliness of
body but theettu] the daily rites of sandhyaa should not be given up - that is
what is said in dharma saasthram.

As additional points- on the number of gaayathri during the japam - it is said
in page 265 - kuRaindha eNNikkaiyil japam sankatamaana kaalaththilO aachoucha
kaalaththilO seyyath thakkadhu enRa dharma saasthram vyavasthai seidhu
kaattiyuLLadhu. Theettuk kaalangaLil paththu thadavaigaLe gaayathri japam seyya
vENdum enbadhai aasvassaayanar enbavar 'aapannachchaasuchi: kalE thishtannapi
japEth dhasa:' enRu kooRiyuLLaar.

A rough translation of this sentence is - in the unavoidable periods and
theettu periods do the gaayathri japam in less number - viz. ten in number says
aasvassaayanar .

Then a question automatically arises - daily what is the number to be done viz.
in normal period?

1008 in the morning, if not possible 108. [less than this is not acceptable to
elders or chieftains- periyOr is the word used here].

Then another question arises - what about maadhyaahnikam - it is said 108 - [if
possible can be done 1008 also - not wrong].

How about evening - again 108 or 10. [in pradhOsham period 10 only in evening].

Incidentally while referring this book, the word nagnan appears in page 124 -
some time back krishnamachcharyaswamin and myself had an exchange of mail as to
who or what is this word nagnan - sivan why and how he is called nagnan.

The clarification is here.

who is a nagnan - the clarification given is

- kachcham illaadhavan

- puchcha kachcham aNindhvan

- iranDe kachcham thariththavan

- iduppil vEshtiyaich chuRRik koNdiruppavan

- koupeenam maaththiram aNindhavan aagiya aivarum nagnargaL

- meaning

- one who is not having the pancha kachcham style of dhothi,

- puchcham means tail - one who has a kachcham like a tail,

- one who has only two folds in the kachcham

- one who has just rounded the dhothi in his body

- one who has the loin cloth alone

is all said to be nagnan - means do not have proper clothing or dhikambaran.

Since sivan is having only a tiger skin as a wrap around and not a full fledged
kachcham he is called nagnan.

Trust this clarifies.

Dear Bhagavathas,

What Ramachandran Swami said is correct. This is
"Nithya" Karma. Even if you travel full day and not
able to take bath or no water available you have to do
sandhyavandham by "Mathra Snanam" and "by air do
Achamanam and Arkyam" and do Japam. I didn't find in
the book (or) told by our Anchestors, that we have to
do Gayathri Japam only 10 times during "Theetu"
period. Whatever we do daily japam same thing should
continue in those period. Nithya Karma is just like
our "Swasham" or "Breath". We will not stop our
swasham during "theetu" period. If anybody feels this
is wrong pls forgive me and request to provide the
clarification. It will help us to update our
knowledge.
