Dear Swamin
Today is most auspicious day. Aavani
Thiruvonam (Sravanam) is the Thirunakshatram of Sri
Hayagreevan. This is also Sri Vaamana jayanthi day.
Keralites are celebrating it as Onam festival.
Swami DEsikan's thirunakshatram is also
thiruvonam , but in purattasi, tamil month. Swami
Desikan will climb Oushatadri on that day(12-10-05)
and offer Mangalasasanam to Sri Hayagreevan . Every
Srivaishnavan of Desika sampradaya is bound to come to
Oushathagiri on that day to have darshan of both
Swami Desikan (Acharyan) and Sri Hayagreevan. The
devotion ofSwami Desikan is so great that Sri
Hayagreeva Stotra is the first of His lyrics. Swami
Desikan's prayer to Sri Hayagreevan that He must
always shine in His heart and take His seat on the
throne of the tip of His tongue sothat His words will
always be graceful , successful and pleasing
We can now know the meaning of penaltimate
sloka of Sri hayagreeva stotram
Sri Hayagreeva is seated on a full-blown
white lotus (oundareeka) sparkling like a newly
dissected marble-slab.He holds the discus and the
conch on the higher arms. The lower right hand shines
with the symbol of instruction as though He is
teaching the Vedas to Sri Brahma. There is a garland
of roses in it which is compared by Swami Desika to a
ghatee-yantra (see-saw) which by it's movement raises
the knowledge from the deep like the machine which
raises water from a deep well for the benefit of all
mankind. The lower left hand has a book asthough it is
an evidence for the recovery of the Vedas carried
away by an Asura from Sri Brahma
THe last sloka(33) narrates thus
Swami Desika advises all of us to study the
Hayagreeva stotra with devotion to attain mastery over
all languages and their import(vaagartha-siddhi)
Here is a sloka from sri DehaleesaStuti
The Vaamana-roopam of Sriman Narayanan is enjoyed in
11th sloka. Sriman Narayanan came to Mahabali's
yagnavatam disguised as a short-statured Brahmachari ,
as He is made up His mind to get back all worlds from
Mahabali by a trick. It may beremembered here that
Mahabali was a descendant of Prahlada and out of
consideration for the great devotion evinced by that
young boy-devotee Prahlada , Baghvan had promised to
him not to slay any of his descendants . The
Brahmacharya Asramam came as a bhikshochitam , quite
suited for begging. Bagwan realised that unless He
took care to hide from view the presence of
Mahalakshmi on His chest, the vesham (part of drama)
will look inappropriate. The alternative of coming
without Mahalaksmi is inconceivable as Mahalaksmi
would never entertain such idea ( Agalakillen iraiyum
yenru alarmel Mangaiyuraimarbha)Krishnajinam came in
handy to hide Mahalakshmi
This sloka points out beautifully how
Lakshmipatitvam is the hall-mark of Bagvan
Let us pray both Sri Hayagreevan and
Vaamana --Thiruvikrama Moorthi in this most auspicious
day by reciting both Sri Hayagreeva Stotram and Sri
Dehaleesa Stuti of Swami Desikan
We will add soon in the photo album Sri
Hayagreevan and Swami Desikan in ekasana. Srikainkarya
requests allof you, swamins, to contribute liberally
to complete the construction of Mahamandap at
Oushatadri Sri Hayagreevar temple Thiruvaheendrapuam
