Share your soundfonts with the world!
HammerSound finally has an anonymous ftp-server again making
it easier for the HammerSound visitors to share their soundfonts. If you have created a
soundfont you'd like to share, please follow the guidelines below.
Note: As of August 13. 1999, HammerSound no longer has the
available bandwidth to host the largest GM soundfonts. When 'everybody' starts downloading
a new 60MB soundfont simultaneously, the bandwidth requirements are significant. If you
are able to provide mirror space for such large soundfonts, please contact me. Until then,
the large-GM soundfont authors must find the ftp-space themselves. Feel free to use the
soundfont newsgroup or the message board at HammerSound to enquire about ftp-space. A
posting at Creative Labs' sblive.music newsgroup requesting ftp-space might also be worth a try.
There has to be a lot of cable-modem users out there with bandwidth to spare. If you find
the ftp-space, please register the soundfont in the SoundFont Library.
How to upload
- When you have created the soundfont, remember to enter the
soundfont name, author info and comments in Vienna ( 'File | Information' ). Try to come
up with a unique name for the soundfont (include your name, or your initials in the
SoundFont name and in the file name). For the rest of this text, let us assume the
soundfont's name is Hammers SubBass, with filename Hammers_SubBass.sf2. Please choose a
filename without spaces (use underscore to separate words).
- Zip the soundfont file using WinZip (or your favourite compression software). The zip file should
have the same name as the soundfont, except of course for the extension. In this example,
it should be Hammers_SubBass.zip.
- Upload the zip file (containing the soundfont) to the ftp
server bundy.hibo.no in the /incoming/soundfonts/
directory. To upload you can use any ftp program, including WS-FTP LE
or the text based ftp client that comes with Windows. Remember to use the binary transfer
mode (not text / ASCII). Login using 'anonymous' or 'ftp' as your username, and your email
address as your password. You can find step-by-step instructions on how to use the text
based ftp program that comes with Windows here.
- Your soundfont has now been uploaded. It is very important
that you register it in the SoundFont Library. If you don't, Thomas won't know where it
came from and it will just end up on his personal harddisk, not in the SoundFont Library. Follow the descriptions
below.
Please note that you won't be able to see the files you
upload (for security reasons). Don't worry. If the upload completed without giving you any
error messages everything should be ok. Also, this upload directory is for free soundfonts
only. Please do not upload commercial soundfonts or commercial software or otherwise
copyrighted material.
By uploading a soundfont, you give Thomas Hammer the
permission to distribute the soundfont for free on the net.
- Visit this page for detailed instructions
- Your soundfont has now been registered. It will appear in the
SoundFont Library, but it'll be marked as 'Temporarily Unavailable' and not yet be
available for downloading. It will be available for downloading when Thomas has had the
chance to transfer it to the HammerSound mirrors. This usually takes a day or two,
depending on how busy he is at the moment.
- Open a MS-DOS prompt ('Start | Programs | Ms-Dos Prompt').
- Change into the directory where the zip file and the text file
is stored, I assume the soundfont name is 'Unique' for the rest of this instructions.
- Run the ftp program to upload the files. Here is a sample
session. The bold words are typed by the user.
