I don't know if this is the proper channel to ask this request (so if it's not, just ignore it): I'm a moderator for a reader's group in Indianapolis, IN. Once a month we gather and discuss a selected short story or essay (and on occasasion, a novel excerpt) from three authors of my choosing, hoping to shed light on that author's religious beliefs, and ultimately, to evoke further reading of the chosen authors. I first got interested in Percy back in '93, and have read all five of his fictional works. The Southern Voice has not been ignored (F.O'Connor, E. Welty, W. Faulkner - sorry I've chosen only the big names so far (but hey, the group is only eight months old), but the coming-of-a-gentleman crossed with the malaise in America has yet to be discussed; and I figure what better subject than the works of Walker Percy (plus, I must admit, I'm looking for a place to fit Percy into the reader's group.

But here's my problem: like all great thinkers, Percy was constantly elaborating on his ideas, and I'm having difficulty deciding what facet of Percy's thought to introduce. I'm not against selecting one of his essays for the group (I recently chose an article written by Arthur Miller entitled "Why I Wrote The Crucible" as an introduction to Miller's social conscience). So what do I choose for Percy?

My first inclination is to choose an excerpt from The Moviegoer, and try to tie Kierkegaard's influence into life in the South - but my goal is to concentrate on Percy's religious beliefs.

I'm open to all ideas. Write me instead of mailing me (at 10061 Greenbrook Trail, Apt A, Indianapolis, IN, 46229), or call me with your suggestions at 317 894 5519... Thanks so much!!
