Me: a painter, illustrator, author, and teacher of art, (now "unteacher" or "diseducator"), at The School of Visual Arts, NYC, for the past 40 years. and prof of art at SUNY New Paltz before that. Currently on sabbatical, working on a semiotic theoretical work, "The Verbalization of Vision," which, coincidentally points in the direction of the end of the world, and explains my deep feelings of kinship w/WP. My fundamental concern is the conflict between primary consciousness that deals directly with symbolic "presence", and higher consciousness, which is gained through the use of arbitrary signs and "representations;" -- between the necessity for embodiment in "presence"-oriented communication, and the manifest tendency to disembodiment brought about by ever-increasing dependence on representational communication; -- between direct visual conceptualization and language-dominated thought.
