He's not of Faulkner's vein (Was it Faulkner who made the wonderful
comment about the South, that "The past isn't even past"?).  But I think
his Southerness, if you will, and the way he grappled with Southern
issues -- particularly in essays -- was at the core of his life as a
writer.  I think the main difference is that he wrote during a later era
in the South than did Faulkner, and that the writing reflects that
difference.

a Southern Writer, cought in the intricate web of a past life being
lived in the present.  To me, he just happened to live there and his
