Looks like just about all of WP's fiction got mentioned (I didn't see Thanatos or LITR but I was skimming--I guess that's 2/3 then). It's hard to argue with #1 and #2 except I'd flip their order. All the King's Men is the confluence of all American Literature, with all the past flowing in and everything after carrying a piece of it. But that's just me getting a little purple about it. It just doesn't get better than that, I say. I was hoping that they weren't going to put Huck Finn as number one. But I completely agree with Absalom being number one; in fact, I'd go as far to say that it is the great American novel. Your description of AKM fits Absalom as well ("the confluence of all American > Literature, with all the past flowing in and everything after > carrying a piece of it"). That's just my two cents. Replace #6 the Moviegoer with the Last Gentleman? Or another one? How could I say? As I go through the dissertation and edit the chapters on each, I think they're all great and do different things - all good and necessary. With the current dearth of Percy fans and attention - I was surprised - and thrilled - to see one of his - any in fact, in the top ten, and the rest filling out the depth of the list. I have a friend who also says ATKM is best novel ever written - swears by it, always has. Loved the description of it you gave, Rhonda, - it was beautiful! And he felt exactly the same way. I also loved C of D and was ROFLMAO (can you say that about good literature??) when I read it. Would be a great movie. (Wish Percy's would be a movie too...) I'm glad to see O'Connor made the list as well... She is a true genius. Does anyone know of Percy taught in Southern Literature courses lately? The ones here seem to skip over him in favor of other authors - or a Percy session at a conference? I can't seem to find him in academia any more, but maybe it's just the circles I'm in. I would love to know if he is being taught or discussed out there! But it's a great way to stay in touch - that's how I saw my daughter's pictures of her trip to Germany - and I know what she's doing on the weekend. (Oops - am I really recommending Facebook to the Percy listserv??) But I actually am posting Percy quotes - not sure anyone but a couple of people really appreciate them. Which brings me to a question: I posted this quote: "The nineteenth-century Russian novelists were haunted by God; many of the French existentialists were haunted by his absence. The English novelist is not so much interested one way or another. "The English novel traditionally takes place in a society as everyone sees it and takes it for granted. If there are vicars and churches prominent in the society, there will be vicars and churches in the novel. If not, not. So much for vicars and churches." (Message in the Bottle 103). Followed the next day by: Percy doesn't leave out "...the Americans' perennial disposition toward 'philosophical megalomania.' American failings include pretension, grandiosity, formlessness, Dionysian excess, and a kind or metaphysical omnivorousness.... American novels tend to be about everything. Moreover, at the end, everything is disposed of, God, man, and the world... A large order that, but the American novelist usually feels up to it." (Hilarious! Now that had me ROFLMAO! Percy had a great turn of phrase!) And someone asked if he has a similar quotes about American cinema? Obviously he must but. anyone know of a profound and pithy Percy comment on American cinema? Another Facebook/Twitter observation - you are limited to a certain number of characters - it's fast food updates, not long philosophical ponderings that are encouraged, just like our society.
