Percy is quoted (through Binx) in the review, and the parallels between Malick and Percy are substantial on numerous levels that could lead to an engaging Percy-L discussion. (Malick, to my knowledge, was greatly influenced by Percy and once apparently considered a film version of "The Moviegoer," though that was some fifteen years ago.) From "Knight," it is possible to understand why. That being said, the somewhat tentative nature of this essay's beginning is misleading and rather establishes the context that ultimately targets what might be seen as Malick's brilliance, and in turn Percy's ? in their artistic rendering of "where" personal meaning lies, in the contrast of being drawn toward the superficial or the substantive, despite the abundant nature of the former (for example, Los Angeles as Malick's setting), and the fleeting "signs" of the latter (the search for relationship) as in "The Moviegoer." Malick and Percy walk in stride in their "indirect communications" of where each places the locus of personal meaning. I, for one, would be interested in any follow-up comments any on the list have to offer. His notorious tendencies to relegate women in his films to whispering waifs, cartwheeling pixies, and ethereal angel-muses are taken to the extreme in Knight. Frequently nude or scantily clad, the impressive roster of actresses in Knight function as little more than fragile beauties, icons of seduction and HD eye candy (with the possible exception of Cate Blanchett, whose short time on screen is more substantive than the rest). As for this movie that portrays flagrant nudity, I say whatever potential artistic good is far outweighed by the harm that it causes. I am sure that Percy would not have approved of this movie. In today?s society, we have to guard our eyes and hearts. Only the pure of heart shall see God. I leave this quote: The Way #134, Holy Purity ?The flesh though dressed in silk?? This is my only comment when I see you waver before the temptation that hides its impurity under pretexts of art, of science?, of charity! This is my only comment set in the words of an old proverb: ?The flesh is flesh though dressed in silk.? St. Josemaria Escriva Marc S. It opens here either this week or the next. So I can't say whether it moves from the aesthetic to the ethical and to the religious. Certainly Tree of Life moved waaay beyond the aesthetic. Malick is my favorite director. The article is interesting. As Henry Mills said, it has a tentative beginning; I would say a misleading beginning. At first, I thought he was going to slam the film. He seemed to have an issue with the "debauchery" parts. But then he turns and directs his criticism to our culture and its inability to see the mystery right under our noses. He goes on to defend TM and his approach to film making. Certainly the Percy allusions are spot-on. TM seems to be onto the search, especially in his last few films. But the article, as interesting as it is, left me wondering what the author's purpose was. For that matter, he seemed so ambivalent that I don't know what he really thought about it--in the end. On the one hand, he seemed to have that evangelical fundamentalist recoil at some of the scenes; on the other hand, he seemed to admire the overall vision of Malick. Can't wait to see the movie. I'm on a FB fan page for TM. The film has been out in Europe for several months. The postings are all positive, but that is expected from a fan page. Still, his works result in people really loving them or walking out on them. There is no mention of Percy in the essay, but the next day I stumbled across the quote below as I've been reading Conversations with Walker Percy: "...My devotion to science is still with me-I like its elegance and precision. It is simply that I became aware of some of its shortcomings, and Kierkegaard helped me to see them. He said, 'Hegel told everything about the word except one thing: what it is to be a man and to live and to die." The McCracken essay was interesting and I wanted to point to another that makes a similar case, if from a more unlikely venue. http://www.rogerebert.com/balder-and-dash/terrence-malick-and-the-christian-story David Roark, on the Roger Ebert website, makes the case that Malick?s vision in his films is distinctly a Christian one. It?s a good companion essay to the McCraken one. Can?t help but wonder what Walker would have thought of Malick?s recent movies. "We would get on the set, they're already filming me [and] I don't know what we're doing," said Bale. "The only research that Terry really gave me other than our conversations ? which were extensive ? was the book by Walker Percy, 'The Moviegoer,' where he's on a search for who knows exactly what, but you know you must be on that search. Bale, who's best known for his roles in the Batman series, "The Fighter" and his Oscar-nominated turn in "The Big Short," plays a decidedly different character this time: a screenwriter named Rick that has lost his way, spiritually and emotionally. He spoke to Take Two about the film, which is set in Los Angeles, touching on the director's unique methods, filming with a confused cast, how conversations about acting make him feel and more. On Terrence Malik's style: "He talked about how he wants to start to move towards films where there's just no script whatsoever. Making a film that is more like, more akin to a piece of music or to literature where the audience [have] their own feelings about the film rather than being dictated to about what they should be feeling... A lot of times he loves the fact that you didn't say your lines. It's always just about being absolutely sincere and truthful." ...continue the article and above media at: http://www.scpr.org/programs/take-two/2016/03/04/46931/christian-bale-on-acting-life-in-los-angeles-and-h/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The article also feature a "telling photograph" (whether intended or not) at the top of the page of what might be a reflection of a modern Binx, which suggests further resonance between the film and "The Moviegoer." I wonder if anyone has located an interview with Malik discussing the movie despite his tendency to eschew public appearance, both as an individual and artist. Enjoy, Henry Mills Percy-L Administrator ________________________________ Christian Bale hates talking about acting: 'I just want to push a pencil through my eyeball' http://www.scpr.org/programs/take-two/2016/03/04/46931/christian-bale-on-acting-life-in-los-angeles-and-h/ by Take Two March 04 2016 While working on "Knight of Cups," Terrence Malik's latest film, Christian Bale didn't have much to work with.
