From percy.listserv.manager at gmail.com Fri Jul 2 23:12:55 2021 From: percy.listserv.manager at gmail.com (Percy-L Manager) Date: Fri, 2 Jul 2021 23:12:55 -0400 Subject: [percy-l] NEW BOOK: "Walker Percy Loves You and Has a Wonderful Plan for Your Life" (June 2021) Message-ID: Dear Percy-L Community: I commend to your attention this recently released, fine publication by author Doug Brown. Memoir-like in nature, funny and moving, the book is written for anyone interested in Walker Percy, coping with grief, or applying literature to everyday life. Of note is its exploration of how Percy's approach to narrative can bring substantial healing to what Percy calls the "aboriginal catastrophe?; and further, how Percy's concept of the sacraments of ordinary life helped its author personally move forward in his life. The book and sample chapters are available on Amazon at the below link. We also welcome Doug at this time as a member of the Percy-L community. Welcome, Doug! Best Regards, Henry Mills Percy-L Manager -- Walker Percy Loves You and Has a Wonderful Plan for Your Life by Douglas Brown Every soul is of infinite value. Every story is worth telling, including yours. After he experienced three traumas, Douglas Brown learned a valuable lesson: the way out is out. The way out of grief is to move forward. Walker Percy Loves You and Has a Wonderful Plan for Your Life is both a memoir and an open-hearted look at the big questions of life, death, and more life. With humor and compassion, Doug writes of how those traumatic events showed him the value of every life. He explores how the writings of Walker Percy, a very funny New Orleans writer, helped him deal with the madness of our time ? and make sense of his own story. And he shows how the sacraments of the ordinary can lead us out of loss and into happiness. Along the way, you will learn that each of us can see and tell our own stories in ways that honor grief while encouraging joy. First, a huge thank you to Henry for getting me set up on Percy-L and for bringing my book to the attention of the folks in this group. Just a quick intro of myself: I have lived in Asheville, NC, for 19 years now and love it here very much. I make my living as a technical writer, but I more strongly think of myself as a dog owner, trail hiker, storyteller, and friend - and a lover of all things Asheville. I was introduced to Percy's work years ago by a friend and immediately fell in love with his novels and essays. I eventually wrote my master's thesis on Percy. But beyond personal enjoyment or academic analysis, I have found that Percy's work has been a deeply meaningful guide to me as I've come to terms with some real struggles in my life. This sounds deadly serious, and in some ways it is. But I also appreciate how just plain funny Percy is. He not only renders the unspeakable speakable, he renders the unspeakable laughable. My book tries to capture that complex swirl of sadness and humor. I'm here to be a part of this community, not simply hawk my book. I want to hear about other people's encounters with Percy's writing. But if you are interested, the book is available on Amazon in paperback or ebook. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096LS1B7M Again, thank you to Henry and all y'all for welcoming me into the group. I posted this call for papers (below) earlier this spring, and just wanted to post one more time in case there is any more interest before I submit the Percy session(s) to SAMLA organizers. SAMLA is being very flexible with deadlines this year (due to Covid, I imagine), so I am extending the deadline for submitting abstracts another week or so?until mid-July. If you have an area of interest on Walker Percy that you?d like to present at SAMLA, send the abstract to me at kareyperkins at gmail.com . CFP and links to the conference with more information are below. The conference will be in-person (Atlanta), which will be great after our virtual conference of 2020. However, if you are hesitant about presenting in person due to lingering pandemic concerns, you can present remotely instead of in-person. We can live stream you using Zoom into the conference session room while you are in the safety of your sanitized home! You don?t have to show up in person. We?ve done this before when one panel presenter could not travel to the conference due to last minute illness of a family member, and it worked great. I will be there in person though! I hope to see more abstracts and live Percy presenters this year! I am very much looking forward to the presentations and the informal discussions we have before and after the sessions! Here is the CFP with the information: Walker Percy CFP for SAMLA 93 November 4-6, 2021, Atlanta, GA Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel and Conference Center https://samla.memberclicks.net/ https://samla.memberclicks.net/samla-93-calls-for-papers ?Walker Percy: Networking, Distancing, and More? Papers for this traditional session may focus on any aspect of Walker Percy?s life and works, either fiction or non-fiction. Especially welcome are topics relevant to the SAMLA 93 conference theme: Social Networks, Social Distances. How are Percy?s novel?s characters networked and connected, or conversely, distanced and alienated, whether socially or other ways, such as existentially? Percy also wrote extensively on the human capacity for language, or ?symbol-mongering,? as he called it. Percy?s semiotic viewed human communication as a ?tetradic event,? one that is necessarily a social event, requiring a community of speakers, with these themes pervasive in his novels as well as his philosophy, his scientific research, and his other interdisciplinary research. Please send 300-word abstracts on these topics or any aspect of Percy?s fiction or non-fiction by July 17, 2021, to Dr. Karey Perkins, South Carolina State University, at kareyperkins at gmail.com . Please also include a brief bio and any A/V requirements in your abstract. The essay traces a path at a lay level through nearly all Percy?s novels and includes quotes from Percy correspondence and interviews. Commonweal is a forum for civil, reasoned debate on the interaction of faith with contemporary politics and culture. Regards, Henry Mills -- Giving the Sickness a Name Walker Percy & acedia By Jeff Reimer, Commonweal July 7, 2021 Acedia is Walker Percy?s great theme, and there is no place for it in America precisely because we have always been puzzled or embarrassed by lives of contemplation. --Mary Gordon In 1972, Lancelot wasn?t coming off as cleanly as Walker Percy would have liked. He was under intense, self-imposed pressure to produce another critically successful novel. A relatively new empty-nester, he was also drinking more heavily than usual, and was in something of a crisis of faith. Writing to his friend Shelby Foote, he said, ?I?ve been in a long spell of acedia, anomie and aridity in which, unlike the saints who write under the assaults of devils, I simply get sleepy and doze off.? Percy being Percy, he inserts a wry, self-deprecating note into his reportage, but his travail with the affliction was very real. Two years later, he was still struggling. His novel was a little closer to being finished, but then he contracted hepatitis. He became depressed. Writing to Caroline Gordon in June of 1974, he told her, ?My hepatitis and depression are better. Maybe one caused the other. Truthfully I don?t know whether I?ve been overtaken by a virus or male menopause or the devil?who I am quite willing to believe does indeed roam about the world seeking whom he may devour. Anyhow it takes the form in my case of disinterest, accidie, little or no use for the things of God and the old virtues. I?d rather chase women (not that I do, but how strange to have come to this pass). I think it has something to do with laziness or the inability to give birth to a 2-year-old fetus of a novel. I don?t like it at all and keep tearing it up. I feel like a Borgia Pope, I still believe the whole thing, but oh you Italian girls!? . . . I always have this duality. I love Percy, understand him, and do not understand him at the same time.I wonder if others ever have this dichotomy. I read Percy and I? laugh, I am in awe, I am moved. And then I am at sea. When I corresponded with Jay Tolson as he was kind enough to guide me through my reading of the Percy novels, he would complement me on my good reading. But there remains that split in me. So I try to continue my joy in Percy's writing, and try not to worry if I don't understand semiotics completely. I leave those details to the scholars. I am a simple reader. And i like reading Percy. Then occasionally I read a marvelous essay like this and learn something and add to my comprehension. There, Bale, quite dryly, comments on Malick?s obvious affinity for the novel and its importance to the film. Malick is mentioned in the Tarantino article Leslie shares. It seems some of the finest and most original directors of the modern era owe inspiration to the MG, even as it has never made it to the silver screen (yet). Once I started reading, it was hard to pull away from either Brown's memoir or the philosophical reflections that are sandwiched between autobiographical chapters.
