Dear Percy-L:
The community may enjoy this short review of Paul Horgan's *Approaches to
Writing* that Percy penned in 1974 for *America Magazine*. As mentioned in
the article of Horgan, "though less well-remembered than Percy or his other
peers, Horgan was twice the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He
was also awarded the Laetare Medal by the University of Notre Dame in 1976
and the Campion Award in 1957 by America."
Besides doing justice to Horgan's book in which the author reminisces about
his craft, Percy offers a few choice words for his readers as food for
thought:
"Writing for a living is, for some reason or other, the only occupation to
which people still ascribe a species of demonism."
“Bad writing is instructive in its own way. A fine writer's thoughtful
analysis of his own trials and errors is valuable indeed.”
This recent re-print of the review also includes a short eulogy Horgan
wrote for Percy, as well as a fine photograph of Percy holding -- at the
edge of the photograph -- no doubt, his favorite drink, bourbon.
Enjoy!
